It is crucial to get your blades properly aligned prior to setting a permanent mount. If your blade isn't lined up properly for your foot, it can prevent you from being able to skate in a straight line and control your edges. In today's video I will show you what to look foe when getting a temporary mount and a permanent mount.

Omg.....thank you for this video.....I just got new boots (Jackson Elle’s this week and my right boot was turning on the inside edge.) Had the blade realigned and it has made a bit of a difference, but needs to be adjusted a little more. At first I felt disheartened that it still wasn’t right, but now realise it can still be fine tuned. For 2 years I’ve only had premounted boots/blades and thought it was just me not being able to do some elements...but even with my new boots not yet aligned totally correctly, I can feel the difference. Thank you for such informative videos and instructions.

Wow, looks like I am not the only one! Same here, Jackson Elle and right skate falling inside edge. They came temporarily mounted, and after skating in then for a while I noticed the screw moved a little bit in the hole. Then I had it permanently mounted. But I still have the problem, although not unbearable, so I decided it’s probably me not the skates... Anyway, I will have it checked again! Thanks Julia for the nice video, as always!!

This!!! I just noticed yesterday my right foot is slightly inward, even when I do spirals I cannot balance unless I am turning left! But on my left leg, I can go straight easily. Also, my right 3 turns are so odd, as much as I have been practicing, even my right foot in a 2 foot spin has NEVER been done properly, I've always lifted my right foot just slightly to compensate ending up in a 1 foot spin. I can do a lunge on both feet but my right always takes me in a turn..my left foot goes straight. Can't believe I am just now noticing how funky only my right foot is on the inside edge. I cant wait to get an alignment!!! 😂😂😂😂

Update on my comment/question below. Today I tried a different pair of skates in the same size as my skates (belonging to my friend) to see if I could hold my LFO/LBO edge any better. The good news is I couldn't hold a LFO/LBO edges on her skates either so I can rule out incorrect blade placement. The bad news is I need to work on my technique :-) Thanks for your great and very clear videos-they are super helpful.

I recently got my blades permanantly mounted after skating in them with the temporary mount for a while to fine tune them but now I find it really difficult to hold a one foot glide with my left foot without overcompensating. Is it still possible to get the blade mounting adjusted or will I have to get a new boot in order to fix this problem?

I have a question as well. So I have a pronation issue too, but also a bone(which many people don't even know they have, ai recently found out) in that area sticking out more than average(both feet, but the right one is worse). Which in combination with that pronation, is actually causing that part of my feet so much pain in a normal nonadjusted boot. Now, I went to a podiatrist and she made an adjustment to my sole. She added some padding to the bottom on the inside part of the soles, so that that part of my feet, around the arch, lifts up, preventing that bone from hitting my boot, but also making my feet not lean inside anymore. Which has helped so much!! But now my question is: with that padding, would the blade adjustment to the inside of the boot still be helpful, or would it actually overly compensate and would I then have to take the padding out. I take it moving the blade a little to the inside, doesnt lift the foot or anything. So I don't know if it could be more helpful or even be worse. I know you are not an expert, but maybe you have an answer, advise or guess?

I'm on the temporary mounts on my first figure skates (coming from hockey skates). The blades are longer on figure skates and sometimes I crash my right toe pick into the back end of the left blade during backwards crossovers and it pushes the blade across in the holes. The screws are definitely tight so it's not that I think there's just a lot of force behind that scooping motion on the inside leg.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
it sounds like you need to get them permanent mounted ASAP. do you have someone who can check for a straight one foot glide and help you make sure they are positioned correctly?
@bradleyglasson8832

@@CoachJulia I did that test but I've since knocked them and re-positioned them again for like the 8th time in 20 hours skating on them :'( I'm going to leave them behind with one of the coaches after class on Wednesday to add a couple more screws. It's only the left blade that moves in an accident. I know when it's not right because my backwards crossovers in a clockwise circle like the left blade slightly offset to the right looking down on my foot. I don't think it's a practice thing because my hockey skates which have no adjustment allow me to do backwards crossovers with equal ability in both directions. When I scoop my left leg behind the right I really notice when the blade has moved or isn't quite perfect.

You admit to not knowing you were compensating for years for a pronation problem you didn’t realize existed. I wish you shared a little more information on *how* to tell if the blade is misaligned. I’ve always just assumed any issues were due to error in my skills. I feel like it would have helped if you had him slightly misalign the skates on purpose and you one foot glided to show what to look for in regards to misaligned blades.

I was noticing when I'm taking my insoles out to dry out my skates, the left foot seems to have a more pronounced mark under the big toe than the right and I was wondering why. So I had a look at my blades today and it looks like the left blade is more towards the centre than the right one for some reason! They came pre-mounted. What should I do? I haven't noticed anything in particular going straight forward because I haven't been looking for it(I'll try it out next time I go), but I have a bit of trouble holding a left forward inside edge especially when I'm going into a three turn. I've also been having trouble with my left backward outside three turn but I put it down to non-dominant versus dominant foot. Now I'm wondering if it's because of the blade.
@rachelrauch4447

To fix this, I would suggest having your skating coach help align the blade. I had a similar problem when I got my new skates, where the blade wasn't aligned with my center or balance which made holding certain edges difficult. To solve this, I had a lesson with my coach who unscrewed a couple of the screws on the blade and moved it to about where it needed to go, and had me skate on that one foot. You will know that the blade is in the right place when you can skate forward on that one foot without your foot/boot shaking AT ALL. If your foot continues to shake while doing this, then I would suggest going to a shop and asking them. Might be a bit difficult to do right niw though with all the closed skate rinks, but I hope you get your problem fixed

This might be an odd question, but is it possible to replace the blade on a boot without replacing the boot itself? Can you assume the blade would be mounted in the exact same spot, or would you go through the mounting process all over again? Are there ever inconsistencies between blades, even the same brand/ model, that you have to account for in remounting? Clearly, I’m very beginner level here, lol😅
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! You can mount a new blade to an old boot. The holes will have to be filled in first, otherwise the screws will not stay secure. Most skating pro-shops can do this process. I actually have a video here about restoring an old pair of my skates, and have shown how I did this process.

I had a pair of pre-mounted boots (Jackson Elle). It was temporary mounted, and after skating in them for a while I had them permanently mounted. However, I had been having issue holding my right foot glide straight - it keeps going inside edge. I’ve been learning everything easier on the left foot, and I thought it’s me that my right foot is weaker (although I am a righty)! Now your video makes me think, maybe I should have my right blade mounting checked?

Hi Julia After seeing your video, I am really unsure if my blades are incorrectly placed or if it is my technique for difficulty holding the LFO and LBO. I have a bit of pronation on my left foot but a very high arch and I have an insole to help with that bit of pronation. My problem is holding the outside edge esp after an inside 3 turn on that left foot. The skate shop pro and my coach (both very experienced) don't think my blades are incorrectly placed (the blades are basically positioned the same on both skates). I just don't know whether it is just my beginner technique or is it a blade placement issue. Any advice?

@@CoachJulia Hi Julia I hope your ankle is better now. That was awful for you and we missed you but enjoyed all your videos! Anyway yes I resolved the issue yay. After my coach and the pro at our skate shop said they believed the blades were placed correctly, I still wasn't convinced if it was my lack of technique to hold an outside edge or it was the blade placement, so my last test was try another pair of skates and see if this made a difference. The good news -it was my lack of proper technique and not the blade placement. Since then, my technique has improved drastically and I have great outside edges now. On a related note, I should also add that your video on skate sharpening was very helpful. I now have my blades sharpened to the maximum ROH which has dramatically helped my skating because we have very cold hard ice at our arena! xoxo

I got my new skates and blades, and when I stood and skated in them, both of my feet felt more pressure on the inside and my big toe joint and my arch hurt. I think is the mounting issue and moving the blades outward should help? And my blades are temporarily mounted, but they put in a screw at the tip of the toe. Would this be a problem when I adjust the blades?
@CoachJulia

The big screw shouldn’t be a problem, as long as they can still Kobe the blade side to side. Did you have them make any adjustments yet? Perhaps moving the blade a touch to the outside would help.

I'm going to go against my usual practice of reading all comments before I comment myself so that I can give a candid reaction to this video. As far as video quality goes, this video is 100% excellent, as are all of Coach Julia's videos. The sound is clear, the lighting is right, Coach Julia has a polished speaking voice and style, this one has location content and an expert guest, so that's all just great, no one could take anything away from the quality of Coach Julia's presentations and her pro style video work. She obviously has a good team behind her. The state of the art in blade alignment described here, however, seems abysmal. The proof of that is that Coach Julia skated an entire high level career with misaligned blades and undiagnosed foot alignment issues. That right there proves that the alignment industry is in sad shape. I would like to believe that Olympic skaters, operating at the most sophisticated level of the art, have expert alignment with lasers and who knows what, but obviously not. If Coach Julia skates with misaligned skates, what are the chances of me getting it right and could that be a big reason as to why figure skating is so darn hard? As shown in this video it seems just trial and error. The idea that the pro is going to send her out on a trial skate, observe, and make adjustments is preposterous. First off, when are you ever going to get a pro to observe you skate? Never. Second, that method is useless for the people that most critically need correctly aligned skates, which are people that are learning to skate. Such people can't do a one foot glide at all, and if they can, they can't do it straight. And if they can do it straight, it's because they are making the needed adjustments, regardless of blade alignment, to make a straight glide, so what exactly is the pro going to see? I'm a one year student. I barely know how to skate. I don't know what an aligned or misaligned blade feels like. It seems to me that blade alignment, according to the info shown here, is something only for expert skaters. After they know how to skate,. and have gone through various sets of skates with varying degrees of misalignment, they will learn what aligned and misaligned skates feel like and can give feedback to their pro on what they need. The rest of us, like Coach Julia for her entire pro career, forget it.
