I've had to upgrade my phone audio after purchasing a DAP and listening to that every day at home. My audio expectations have changed accordingly and I'm going to use this as my, at work, single device onboard option.

I love this thing. I bought it for iems and it's genius. The even lower power requirements, super low noise floor, battery power means no transformer noise and its tiny. The sound I get is magical. Almost gives a sort of tangible but insanely transparent feel.

Excellent video once again! I bought the BTR5 a few weeks ago for £90 (like you said its sold out or gone up to £125 on Amazon). It fits my use case well, for example I can use my HD600 with a balanced cable to listen in bed or in other areas of the house other than my desktop. Very simple to use for IEMs too. For its size I wholeheartedly agree that this is worth the money. Looking forward to your next video!

I brought one of these a few months back, lovely piece of kit, I run it balanced with my HD599s and it is great. Not the best DAC I own but for its use case it is brilliant. Good work with the channel hope to see more videos going forward.

Using the same set-up although I have found out only recently that the USB DAC mode seem to offer an appreciably better quality than the LDAC codec.

Thanks for this excellent review. I had been considering the BTR5 and your comment regarding the low noise floor has sealed the deal for me. I have a pair of KZ ZS 10 Pro IEM's and bought the KZ Bluetooth module for them and the noise floor is dreadful, at £13 I didn't expect much but it's unusable. I have now placed an order for the BTR5 thanks to this review

Hope you like it Chris; yeah the noise floor on cheapo Bluetooth units is really intolerable, I think you’ll be pleased with the BTR5’s performance. The KZ ZSN pros are irritatingly sensitive and even through them the background is silent.

Two comments: The plastic case is a bit tacky but it does protect the device from scratches and being dropped so I leave it on all the time. Also, to get the best sound quality out of it, check out USB Audio Player Pro (Android only I believe, but a great player).

I'd really love a comparison to the Qudelix-5K. As I understand it is more modern, has some additional features, but is only available via import from US, and is from a less established company. From a practical perspective, the integrated clip is a big plus too. Some microphone testing (the device's and pass-through) would be very welcome. With an audiophile-ish product like Bluetooth DACs I understand the focus is going to be listening quality but mic is important as well and often overlooked. I am interested in a Bluetooth DAC for VR applications including social VR where the microphone will see significant use.

Forgive me if I've missed something here but I thought that bluetooth sound quality is not as good as a wired connection. Does the unit improve the blutooth sound quality being output by the phone because of the better quality dacs in the Fiio or because of its amplifier or both? If you connect with the usbc cable to the phone instead of bluetooth is there a noticible improvement in sound quality?

If you didn't care about bluetooth, would you choose this or the iFi hip dac if you wanted to use multiple devices (two different laptops, and a mobile phone?). the hip dac is effectively the same price here in aussie-land. I have been considering this bit of kit and was wondering how it would do with your Sundaras if you used the balanced connection. That should fix the problem. The new version of this comes with a lightening connector for an extra $10 which is a bargain.

Mine btr3k can be fully charged and within 5 minutes it will say 80% Battery then every hour after that it will lose 20% Battery . I've had it for years now and only just recently started back using it again so this makes no sense. I have the BTR7 in a clip case but it's so heavy . I'm thinking I might buy the BTR5 2021 Version To Replace The BTR3K .

It hasn’t got the most powerful headphone amp so would struggle with a 600 Ohm beast! Most suited for iems and high sensitivity over ears I’d say.

Did you get a chance to use the BTR5 on your IPhone. The Bluetooth on the IPhone is only MP3 quality. I wanted to use the device on the the lightning connector using a lightning to camera cable. Any info you can provide would be helpful.

Replying to an old post but if it helps someone, yes, there is a 'car mode' where it switches itself on and off according to the power coming from the USB connector. I use mine with my PC but sadly it doesn't switch off USB power when it's powered down.

I bought the BTR3K and it was horrible. The sound reminded me of a cheap $9. dongle. I don't trust Fiio because of that.
