The large dead zone in the beginning of the volume turn is probably a feature, not a bug. This way you won't accidentally turn it to the point where you turn if off if you want it to be quiet. Same thing with the K3 I have, the beginning of the rotation near the on/off switch does nothing.

@@CallumSk8er Sybasonic UAU07A and its clones like the M-Audio Super DAC and Logilink UA0211 have an input selection switch, but they're far from the highest-quality headphone amps. At least my Logilink sounded too veiled for me so I had to move on, despite the yes-god-finally presence of both an input switch and an output switch and a large-ish horizontal volume knob. Other than that, only if you can accept high-distortion DAC/amps for prices above 300+ USD and can deal with the awkward ordering process, you could go for an Audio-gd from the NFB or R/R2R families, and again you would have input and output switches.

RMAF went great! Definitely my favorite room at the show and I know I'm not alone in that. My girlfriend was able to figure out what speakers and headphones she wanted in your room which was cool. Hope you're able to do it again.

first and foremost, you're not by any means a loser, quite the contrary, you're our beloved Zeos. now that we've got that out of the way, and I know most of this review is practically a message for Fiio, this is the most anti-selling sell I've heard of a product, because you're still giving it a seal of approval, but, gee, is it hard to still be motivated to buy it after all the little nags you've addressed and shone light on. I agree with all the particulars you've observed, and it could even have bluetooth. However, from your words and others I've heard (indistinguishable from atom +kadas board) , it's a very clean dac and a very clean amp with 1.5 AND a decent knob, and I think I might just finally be pulling the plug on this one as it's priced to my wallet and ticks all my boxes - though I reeeeally love the design of the el amp, it's so much more $$ here in my neck of the woods.

So agree with powdered properly and loudness. Hence the difference between a desktop DAC and a dongle DAC. And even then decent desktop DAC is sometimes just not enough.

The easy down and hard up switches makes sense, don't wanna accidentally slap up the gain a level, but slapping it down is fine. Just turn it up again. Stops you from blowing up your headphones

@@faelanman901 Not a great idea. I did this and I regretted it. If you have other headphones with 300 ohm or less, pick up the K5 Pro, but the best you could do with a DT 880 600ohm is to buy a DAC and the Emotiva A100 which I did some time ago, and that changed the sound of the DT 880. It's still too harsh in some music so I'm still searching for ways to reduce the sibilance (like using tubes beforehand).

This is the only dac-amp combo that average audiophile would need for high impeadance headphones. As long as your headphones aren't above 300 ohms, this unit can power them nice and clean.

The E09K actually had line-out AND pre-out. So, the K5 is a step back in that way. Also none of the older ones had a DAC, they all relied on the portable unit to do that. That is why the amps have USB, it's a passthrough to the dock.

Zeos: There is a problem with your statement that "Balanced is better" The thing is : if you compared single ended and balanced output of one amplifier: when you use single ended output you use only half of the circuit of the amplifier, of course using all of it will give a superior result. Balanced is a different way to do thing. It isn't innherently better. To get a more accurate comparaison you should compare similarly priced amplifier of a brand: one purely single ended and one balanced: Like the NFB29 and NFB28 of Audio GD.

Balanced offers some benefits in power throughput and noise/crosstalk elimination, but there aren't many situations in which a consumer headphone setup can audibly benefit from that. I have a 789, and it sounds the same to me through balanced and single-ended when taking volume out of the equation. The 789 just sounds amazing because it's an amazing amp, not because it offers balanced input and output. Unbalanced amps can still be better. Balanced isn't necessary for an amp to be amazing, and shouldn't ever be a concern for any consumer who doesn't have any specific reasons to require a balanced setup.

@@JDS_im From my experience, balance makes the most difference when going balanced the whole way through, not just out of the amp's output. Need to feed the amp balance from the DAC as well.

@@junkiexl86 Well yeah, if you're using a balanced DAC and single-ended headphone output, you're effectively clipping your amp, so yeah as a result you might wrongfully believe that balanced sounds better.

I totally agree that the BasX-A100 is the amp to have for running T50RP's single ended. However, 3 of the 4 sets of T50RP's that I have are wired for balanced. As a result, I ended up selling my BasX shortly after getting the 789. I found the 789 had enough power to get the job done when running them balenced, and be clearer and cleaner overall. The bass on the A100 was probably a little better then the 789.

I'm using this coupled with a pair of DT 990 Pro's 250 Ohms via USB from my PC. All volumes maxed out and highest gain. It starts clipping/rattling (only left side of the headphones) if volume passes 3 o' clock position on bass boosted songs only. The thing is - it's not too loud as you describe in the video - I feel like it's almost enough, but not quite... In comparison, my £10 KZ-ATE chinese IEMs sound comfortable on highest setting up to the 12 o'clock / 1 o'clock position. I really was expecting a lot more power based on your review.

@@Staffy_ I had received a used pair from Amazon most probably. Sent them back and got a brand new pair. The issue with the rattling is gone. I can recommend the K5 with your DT990s if you use some sort of equalizer. I use DFX (software). It's good enough for adding bass and treble (believe it or not I enhance the treble). You'll turn the volume up to the 3 o' clock position (max out to 5 o' clock position in some tracks). It's enough for listening. Not crazy loud though, but I think that's because the 990s are open back. The K5 is about perfect if you don't want to risk getting deaf on the long term.

Can anyone give me a recommendation that's similar to this but has a proper line out, or a switch between headphone/pre-out? In the same price range and is also a DAC/amp combo of course. The fact that it has only pre-out without a switch is a deal-breaker for me.

DX3 Pro. Not sure how it compares sound-wise to the K5 Pro, but it measures far better than it. DX3 also comes with a remote. I ran my HD 660/700's off the DX3 Pro for about 7 months before I upgraded again, was really impressed, esp coming from a Magni 3/Modi 2 Uber combo.

great review keep up the good work. I have just received my fiio k5 pro i was wondering if you could give me some help. I noticed you have the input on COAX/OPTICAL IN is that the best input when using a headset for sound quality over just using the USB input settting? I mainly game so it would be great to know if its worth me buying the extra cables to get the maximum sound quality out of the k5 pro. my headset it is paired up with is beyerdynamic DT 990 PROS TIA.

For casual listening, the Micca Origen is acceptable, but trust me, you'll want to unplug your headphones once you hear how relatively poor-sounding it is. Even the sub-par-sounding FiiO Q1 mkII is noticeably better... and costs less.

I would recommend to base your decision on aesthetics, I/O and features. All 3 of those will sound more or less the same, and drive just about any headphone perfectly well.

@@aminfahmi I ran the V1 DX3 Pro for 7 months before I upgraded again. Not a single issue on my end. Damn good unit. Was a better DAC than the Modi 2 Uber I had and the Amp though lacked some power, sounded better to my ears than the Magni 3 which was the combo my DX3 Pro replaced.

The volume pot is analogue...logarythmic pot, should be linear....log pots are terrible...personal taste but i prefer the ESS version .....great for the price....i would have paid $50 bucks more for a balanced 4.4mm Pentacomm headphone output...it is possible to get a balanced output higher up the range....good review as usual.....

I have the K5 Pro ESS and the Heresey/Modi... Can't go wrong with either since they both sound great, but with the schiit you can add the Loki EQ if that's what you're into or upgrade either the DAC or AMP down the road. Whereas the K5 is all in one, no EQ and no upgrading. For me, I like the K5 better for it's cleaner footprint and more versatile connections. The volume knob is a lot nicer too. I have no problem powering my Sundaras, 660Ss or HD6XXs with either.

Should try and get your hands on a Schiit Ragnarok 2. Balanced headphone out claims 24W into 32 ohms. 15W into 50 ohms. Single ended claims 6W into 32 ohms. 3.75W into 50 ohms. Being an integrated amp of sorts it’ll also put 60W into 8 ohm speakers.

@@enjoshi-godrez8775 V2 is a loudspeaker amp and V1 is meant for headphones and IEMs Schiit even says so. Jack of all trades vs specialized tool. I'd get a V1 and opt for another amp that specializes in loudspeakers instead of trying to save money on an all in one

OG K5 does not have a DAC. USB on the back is for the doc connector on top.

I'd been looking for an upgrade to my Origen G2 output power-wise as well as eliminating the extra step of turning the knob fully to 100% when switching over to Pre-amp Out to go to my integrated amp and then onto the passive speakers...yes this has the power and the velvety DAC chip but the fact it outputs to both the quarter inch and the "not actually line-out" RCA outs means the Micca Origen remains on my desk for now

$100 for ESS with in 2023. This is the future. Also - if the vaolume starts only after a gap, it eliminates the pre-out defficiency of being turbed on by the wheel, doesn't it?

I have an X3 III on K5 dock, doing line out to a speaker. The USB on the back of the K5 is just a pass through to the DAC on the X3 or any other device FiiO makes that is compatible with the K5. Not much advantage to this setup other than it charges the DAP while playing sitting on the K5.

I've been using a the K5 with a Fiio E 17k Alpen dac in the dock for years until the battery just blew up on me the other day. I guess I'll get this now. So yeah, I' m the one using the DAC in the old K5. haha.

Hi, thanks for the detailed video but I still have one question: I have owned a Dragonfly Red for more than two years, but I would like to further improve the sound of both my headphones and my active speakers (Edifier r1700bt) and I would be mainly oriented towards purchase of the Fiio K5 Pro. Do you think it is worth replacing the Dragonfly with the Fiio or would my listening quality remain more or less the same? I would not like to have two identical products and spend money unnecessarily. So ultimately, is the Fiio better / superior than the Dragonfly Red? Thank you.

fiio k5 pro is meant to be for headphone only, i never bother to plug my r1700bt into the RCA out because the implementation is a mess

The Fiio K5 Pro is disgustingly good value for money. In the past I've spent a lot more money for the same or less listening experience.

DX3 Pro costs 50% more, offers only 66% of the max power of the K5, and takes distortion numbers into ridiculous territory, where the difference can't really be heard. A THD+N below 0.005% is already enough to stop worrying about it, going even lower is just showing off.

I know that feel, I lived in southeast asia and fiio products are more accesible for me than JDS stuff sadly I could try to import it but the shipping cost and customs would cost me more than the twice of product cost

The reason I got this unit was because it showed an input option. Which I needed to use with REW to bench my amps for THD. To my utter dismay. When I hooked it up to my laptop. I only got an output option. No input option. Why ?.

I'm considering purchasing this. I'm not an "audiophile" but I do appreciate above average sound. I just bought Philips X2HR and the V-Moda Boom Pro mic. From what I understand, if I ran the splitter into this amp/dac then the mic into my PC, it would cause a buzz in the mic. Is there any way around this besides getting a different mic? For amp/dac with mic inputs the options seem pretty limited. I do also have some Overnight Sensations at my desk powered by a small Dayton Audio amp so something that I could switch between speakers/headphones would be ideal. Any suggestions for a bit of an audio noob? :D

Ok. So these are 150 bucks on Amazon. The JDS atom cost 95 bucks. Should I just get these or should I get the atom and buy a higher end dac later down the road? I want a clean and flat sound. I'll use them with mostly my Superlux HD 660 and sometimes with my IEMs. I mostly game but I want the better quality for mixing dialogue and watching movies. Thanks! 😁

I dunno, the more I think about it the more I think the pre-out is a feature, not a negative. The only thing you need to set up some desktop speakers then becomes a dumb amp without any volume controls. But in that scenario it should definitely either output sound front or back.

I use it for headphones and JBL monitors. Just get a wifi power strip to plug up you powered speakers and sub and your good to go.

13:45 For what it's worth, I used to have the original K5 dock. It's listed on Amazon as being (or having) a DAC, but it didn't. It was an amp only. If you own a Fiio DAP (like the X1 or X5 I had), you could put it in the dock, connect the K5 to your computer, and use the docked DAP as your external DAC. I tried and thought it all was meh. Anyway, listing that unit as a DAC/AMP was always misleading.

@@davidkorcak yeah but sorry I have the K3 and use it for power my iem and low sensivity headphones And use the 'lineout' for my tube amps I need to turn the knob for full line out then I nearly blow out my iem when pluging in acidentally Never want to experience that again

@@davidkorcak It's a problem if you frequently switch between using headphones/IEMs and speakers. It's an extra hassle to remind yourself to either switch the speaker off and then plug your headphones in to listen to the headphones, or plug your headphones out and switch the speakers on. Having one knob control both makes things complicated. Not having a switch is a deal breaker for me. Gonna stick with my E10K for now.

Yes, you can adjust the line out level with the Volume Knob. I use my K5 Pro as DAC/Preamp to my Denon PMA-1080R class “A” amplifier. Listening HiRes FLAC and WAV files from my laptop, sounds like heaven.

Balance is actually worse for fidelity. The main advantage is, for portable products, that a balanced output can get twice the gain with similar input voltage. From a pure audio quality standpoint, Fiio choice makes absolute sense.

The whole reason I went with it is because I already had a fiio x5ii, so I bought it specifically because of the dock. It has plenty of power to drive my HiFiman he400i and it's the best sound I've found yet but I only have a few headphones and only 1 amp.

If I connect my speakers through the pre-out, it produces noticeable hiss sound that is audible in both speakers and headphone. I'm not sure if it's my unit that is defect or not. If I don't use the pre-out, the hiss sound is gone completely.

Good that you mentioned where the TL;DW part starts, but to be honest, you could really use working off of some kind of script or framework. Over half an hour? You could have gotten all the meaningful stuff said and shown in around _third_ of that time. Oh well, at least you're not wasting time doing editing & stuff.

Would this be alright with the Kanto TUK? Currently using a AudioEngine D1 i had lying around with the optical hooked into my TV and then the RCA into my TUKs. Works great but i have the Sundaras and i find i could use about 15-20% more volume as i find i'm maxing the volume on the D1 on alot of songs.
