Vanessa De Jesus is a senior at Sierra Canyon and has just recently committed to Duke. She is the top ranked Asian American hooper in the country and showed why with her dominant performance at the West Coast Jamboree. Down the stretch, she takes over games with ease and has no fear of putting the team on her back. Sierra Canyon is one of the top teams in the nation and is coming off a state title. The highlights you see feature the semifinals and finals of the tournament. Vanessa and company scrapped out a tough down-to-the-wire victory over Saint Joseph's Notre Dame in the semifinals but lost a thriller in the finals to the top team in the country Mater Dei. Despite the loss, Vanessa was awarded the Jim Capoot Memorial Award, given to the player who exemplified the greatest sportsmanship and inspirational play.

Just to help clarify the confusion because I have seen many comments about this. Fil-Am (Filipino American) doesn't mean that Vanessa is not 100% Filipino, it just means that she is a Filipina who grew up in America. Both of Vanessa's parents are of Filipino descent and she was brought up here in the states. Similarly, the term Asian American refers to Asians who have grown up or live in America. From talking to her, it's clear that she's proud of her Kababayan heritage and we're all excited to see her continue to succeed!

My parents are both Filipino born in PH, but relocated to the US for work. I was born in the US. When I'm in the Philippines for vacation, I've been asked if I'm half Filipino....I have to explain to them, I'm an American citizen, but my blood is pure pinoy. For some reason, if you're Filipino blood and born in the US, it makes you half Filipino, lol.

She is a FULL BLOODED Filipino. ( Ethnicity, heritage ) BORN and RAISED in the US which makes her an American by BIRTH. JUS SOLI = Birthright through place of birth. FIL-AM can mean several things. 1 - One parent is Filipino other is an American. 2 - BORN ang RAISED in the US of BOTH Filipino parents ( Vanessa ) 3 - A Filipino IMMIGRANT that has acquired US citizenship.

@@YYC403NOYP fil am is a loose reference...which usually just mean the person is Filipino to those in the Philippines. I dont like to call myself Fil Am...Fil Am to me are immigrants to the US who may become US citizens or not. I consider myself American and Filipino by ethnicity. Just like many Japanese or Chinese born in the US, I will identify them as American with the proper ethnicity.

Agree.. Her basketball IQ is really good, she's also good in transition. I can't help but smile when I see a good player. Hopefully she will enhance more of her skills, I'm everybody wants to see her succeed.

Your kababayan are proud of you Vanessa. You are not only a good basketball player but take your academic seriously. Not everyone can attend Duke, that alone is a big accomplishment. You are young, there will be plenty of basketball for you later on whether WNBA or Gilas (or both). Be smart and take care of your schooling.

Vanessa is the play maker of the team. Her 3 pointers are excellent. She is not selfish and passes the ball to her team mate who is free to score. She has high basketball IQ.

I always find an amazing talent of filipino here in youtube. I think it was all in field of sports, entertainment wether in singing, dancing and beauty contest. Filipinos are always present even in working in other countries they all show that they are d best and skilled human being on earth, thats why i can walk in public with head high up proud to be Pinoy. 👍👍👍👍 👏👏👏👏 Cheers to all
