Excellent mini-doc! Some nice features on the kiwi locos compared to the pommy ones I have worked on, namely the easy clean smokebox and firebox ashpan, and of course those pneumatically controlled firehole doors.

Never seen an 'easy clean' smoke box in Australia or Tasmania..

No rocking grates though it seems

@@struck2soon yes, but that's not a rocking grate. The door to clean out the smokebox is good though.
@struck2soon

@@Match2100 not sure how a rocking grate could be any more beneficial than a drop grate? At disposal time all you need is some way of getting the fire dropped without resorting to the paddle to get it out. The other notable thing on this loco are the side doors in the ashpan which enable the ashes to be pushed out with a rake standing next to the loco. No need to get under the loco to drag them out like the vast majority of British locos! (It was only when the Standard designs arrived in the last few years of steam that British engines saw such conveniences, the Kiwi locos had them from the 1930’s onwards.)

I remember doing all this with Steam inc, except that there was no overnight crew. Satisfying work, and easy once you develop a routine.

Overnight crew was only on because it was a Vintage Harvest festival weekend; not normally on either. What a luxury that would be !!

What is coal like? Volatile matter, ash contact. Bituminous or semi bituminous or anthracite?
@rmz250k7
@rmz250k7 Жыл бұрын
This coal we were using at the time, and commonly found in the Western regions of the South Island here in Nz; was of Bituminous grade, with the standard make up of Carbon, ash, moisture and volatile matter. Probably around 60% carbon matter, 30% volatiles and the remainder the other 2 parts. Went well.

I just some times wonder how people work as a fire man like, how do you not get black lounge from the coal and other grime on the train.
@rmz250k7
@rmz250k7 Жыл бұрын
That's the trick you learn over time 😎 New members to the foot plate are generally covered in soot by days end.. you learn how to keep yourself clean. Keeping coal watered, the floor swept and clean, washing your hands with your ready at hand bar of sunlight soap, and wiping your face with a clean rag when you can 😅 It's doable. Unless there are tunnels on the line.. then there is nothing you can do 😅
