Cannot describe the feeling watching this shoot. Thanks a TON whoever captured this Treasure... I can watch this every day to make my day better...What a wonderful expression from the Genius.. actor Sivaji Ganesan.. too good. சிவாஜி கணேசன் ஒரு மாபெரும் நடிகர்.. அவரை போல ஒருவர் பிறந்ததும் இல்லை. இனி பிறக்க போவதும் இல்லை.

The host himself is being ignorant and racist but I loved to see the behind the scenes of this movie. I was really excited when I saw the close up of the screenplay.

+RDPublicfeatures He does not sound racist to me. What he really intended to say was very clear that, the actress' are projecting themselves more whiter than what they actually are. The toning of the skin colour actually makes them even more uglier.

@calicocentric (contd2) This policy of neutral but comprehensive presentation has since then characterized UK based films and documentaries. In continental Europe however, TV films have (possibly since Malle) followed this style of condescension trying to drive home the point that "all exotic orientals are savages" & implying that their "only redemption is by following western values"

@mariyam1985 I don't think this was popular. I don't know about its reception when it was aired but it seems that it remained forgotten until a Criterion DVD version came out.

@calicocentric The whole point is that it spawned a series of similar stuff. There are several clones over the decades that featured the 'real India' on continental European television which are almost carbon copies of these clips by Malle, focussing purely on the weird bits & the narrator always using a proselytizing & condescending tone (the UK is different). I even happened to see one on TV just two months ago! I am sorry maybe 'popular' isn't the right word as much as 'influential'

Looks like you hear what you want to in order to perpetuate your victim hood complex. He also said that in a country filled with beautiful people with delicate features, the movies stars are short and thick featured. He also criticizes the Indian notion that white is beautiful

@calicocentric (contd1) Michael Palin or Michael Wood have never done this in their UK documentaries - they do show the negative socio-economic drags on the nation, but they also show how the culture, through its traditions, ideals & aesthetics have built compensatory mechanisms inspite of such problems. Never do they try to judge one or the other - that is upto the viewer, and on the other side, the (Indian) population to decide.

@calicocentric I have not seen the movies you have mentioned but I will definitely check them out. Thank You for the suggestions! While you may be right to the extent that Malle is 'done with the white man's burden', I find his manichaean perspective, disapproving of the traditions, ideals & in this case, cinematic aspirations of the Indian people (which is frankly not his business) as nauseating as the whining of a lonely, insular and hormonally- deprived hag.

@mariyam1985 I am not sure but I have a feeling that Louis Malle's India has a dystopian perspective as against the exotic India portrayed by movies like Gunga din, The Indian Tomb or even Italian neo-realist Hello Elephant!. What I liked about him most is that he's thoroughly done with the white man's burden. [I posted this comment first under another ID by mistake.]

I think in French you could say that Malle is "tout simplement bette" - he cannot appreciate what aspires people to write scripts, music, dances etc and compares this to films made in France. Now, if that is not being "bete", well ....
