One thing I would add in regards to batteries, depending on the camera, will be a manual camera, is some used mercury cells which are no longer made. There are alkaline versions but the voltage is generally a little higher and might make the meter inaccurate. When loading, I always told people to watch the rewind knob to make sure it's turning while shooting.. And of course, I think I missed this part, but need to push the little button release on the bottom before rewinding OR you can tear the film.. I've unfortunately done that.. OY!! LOL!!

I first learned to shoot with a 35mm camera. In 76 I bought a Yashica TL Electro, I took that camera everywhere, until it developed light leaks. I had it repaired but still had the same problem so in 95 I got a Canon EOS Elan. I love using older cameras like those so much I also have a Nikon FM 10. I just love the simplicity of it. Later on, I bought a Canon 60D and an 80D. Two years ago, I made the move to mirrorless with an EOS R5. Other than the Yashica I still have my other camera bodies. I still use the Elan or FM 10 from time to time. Thanks, Vanessa, for another great video.

I started shooting film a few years ago (again) after I was gifted my uncle's AE-1 Program. I've also been gifted and AE-1. What I've found is it's made me slow down my digital process, too. Instead of shoot-like-a-machine-gun, I now tend to slow down and take more time composing. Plus, the shutter sound on a film camera can't be beat.

I always thought that modern digital ISO was the equivalent of hot swapping different analogue rolls of film with different sensitivities for each actualization. its like changing rolls of film for each modern photo taken! one of the many reasons this student of film loves his digital! When i moved away from film, the temptation to "spray and pray" was too tempting to ignore... it took a lot of data and a couple of weddings under my belt before calming the F down with the machine gun fire....as much as I love digital, I sometimes miss the slow shooting approach of not knowing if ones ideas are even worth it till getting the film back from the chemists weeks later, but then i think it through...

I always suggest to someone who starts with the film photography first time ever is to go with the camera that has aperture priority or the camera with the autofocus. G.A.S. will kick in right after so, later on fully manually camera can be bought.

I’m so glad you talked about film cameras. I too learned on film back in High School. By the time I was learning, autofocus was already the new it thing. I still shoot my Minolta Maxxum 7000 and 9000. Phil the owner of Precision Camera is great. I’m in The Woodlands, and Precision Camera here doesn’t develop, so I sen mine to The Darkroom.

Great video Vanessa, it was a good review. I started with film, my first 35mm SLR was a Minolta SRT 100, switched to Nikon and have remained aNikon enthusiast. I still have an FM2n and an F-100, on occasion I still use them. Presently using D500,Z5 and Z50. I love them all . I always want to have a film camera , film keeps me grounded and are fun! 😊 Happy New Year 🎉🎉🥳❤📸

You're the first person I've heard claim SLRs kill their battery so quickly. I'm used to getting almost a year or so out of a battery for the AE-1 Program and similar A-models (occasional use.) The 1990s models, auto focus brought disposable larger batteries that for sure would only last a short while. I learned on the FTb-n, later had a Canonet G-III QL17 for awhile in the '90s. I still have my Elan II and 7, 50D, and 6D and R8. The Digital Rebel (EOS 300) was a huge disappointment for me (great images, but only with really good lighting, and bad ergonomics.) I shot a roll of Sensia in my old Elan years later and realized what a mistake the EOS 300 was for me. Because I am not a pro, I do not need to shoot digitally and have that workflow. But I decided long ago I cannot sustain film as a hobby unless I could go all in on the process to reach some economies of scale: bulk loading film, developing at home, scanning at home, printing at home. But that lifestyle isn't practical for me, so digital images is what I do, for the same reasons most people do it. Oddly enough, after all these years, I'm finally creating my own light ... if I'd done that back in 2003 I might still have that Rebel.

Happy new year. Really enjoyed your talk today on the film camera photograph. It reminds me that I started film photography in 1960s always shooting Nikon. I reluctantly ventured into dslrs with the D40, much later with the d610. I gave up Nikon because I was not impressed with the Nikon digital photography performance (my personal opinion) as well as I was intimated by the advanced digital photography technology. On the other hand I still like the D40 because it’s simple and reliable. I switched and became a Canon and Fujifilm shooter but remains in the novice level. Thanks again for your talk and presentation.

@@VanessaJoy It's been decades, so seeing it was more helpful than I expected. The last wedding using film for me was in 2000. One trick I used to squeeze out an extra frame or two: I would tighten the spool in the film cartridge, so I only needed to take two shots to get past the exposed film leader.

I'm just shocked! It seems that the current generation just doesn't understand what a film camera is. I will soon be 66, and yes, my first and second cameras were film. And this is 1 - you need an exposure meter, 2 - there is no autofocus, at best it’s a Fresnel lens, that’s exactly the thing with the circles, in other words, no sharpness, film sensitivity is good if 100 units, flash synchronization is 1/30 of a second. But the most remarkable thing is shooting on a negative, developing this negative film, where all the colors are negative, that is, opposite, and then, if it is also a color film, then you also need color filters for printing, and they must be used manually, by trial method and errors. What could I compare this to? It's simple - instead of buying a plane ticket and flying to Europe, rent a boat with oars and a compass with maps, and good luck!

Ah, it depends. Many people started with late 80s and 90s film cameras that already loaded and unloaded film automatically and had autofocus and modes that are very similar to the digital camera experience.
