I review the first Amicus horror film. It was directed by Freddie Francis and stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

Thanks for the reminder. I recognised the film title, but there are so many horror anthologies around then. Once you mentioned the train and a few of the cast i know exactly which one it is, and i really like it. I should start giving my own bloody axes to your reviews, i missed out on those with the Hammer ones, 3 bloody axes.

The artist who lost his hand in the Christopher Lee segment was Michael Gough, who played Arthur Holmewood in the first Hammer Dracula, and in the late 80s and 90s played Alfred in 4 Batman films.

Yeah I looked him up straight after and thought "ahhh!". He gets a better part in this than at least 2 of the guys on the train.

Amicus was a powerhouse when it came to the winning formula. Just look at the Warner Bros./Amicus film From Beyond the Grave. Dr. Terror is enjoyable to watch. Being a Cushing follower, you enjoy each transitional story with each actor looking more fearful than the last. Brian Clemens took the Amicus format and made it his own with Thriller for television, which effectively moved the anthology format further into old and new territory.

6:20 you see this is why us yanks are armed, you never know when some werewolf may attack lol. In all seriousness though I've never seen this one but I'm going to have to check it out because I'm a big fan of Anthology films, especially horror ones.

Regarding knowledge of guns, Britain did have National Service up to the time this film was made, so most British men would have some experience of firearms. Some more killer plant movies: - Navy Vs the Night Monsters - Womaneater - From Hell it Came - The Mutations (human/plant hybrids) - Voodoo Island - The Little Shop of Horrors (both versions) Apart from the remake of Little Shop of Horrors, these films range from just about bearable to abysmal.

If you'd said you were reviewing their comedies, then that would have been a surprise lol. I know i'm mostly into horror, comedy, and action films, but i know you aren't a big fan of comedies, though i hope you don't mind me saying, from things you've said in past videos, you clearly have a good sense of humour, just not often in films, which is fair enough..

I was interested in your take on the "Voodoo" section of the movie, and the fact that Roy Castle’s character didn’t die and wasn’t really punished at the end of his story. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, during which Roy Castle was popular on UK children’s TV and light entertainment. When I saw the movie, Castle’s presence seemed to largely code "Voodoo" as a "comedy" section (very much like the golfing story in Ealing’s OG of portmanteau horror, "Dead of Night"). Given Castle’s TV persona, it would have seemed mean spirited and tonally inconsistent for him to have been murdered, rather than just frightened, at the end of the section. That probably wouldn’t be the perception of people watching the movie now, who are unfamiliar with Roy Castle’s other work and contemporary image.

Some good insight there, Ghost. Thank you. Due to my age, my first memory of Castle is when he was in the news over his fight with cancer.

To be fair in The Satanic Rites Of Dracula, after Peter Cushing decided in the previous film that silver could kill a vampire, he melted a silver crucifix into a bullet and tried to shoot Christopher Lee lol.
@jonbolton337620 күн бұрын
I take your point on the bullet making stuff just being there. At least with Van Helsing he's more likely to have access to such stuff.
@themidnightwoodsman180420 күн бұрын
I just about buy it with Van Helsing the 9th. It's the sort of daft thing he might have researched how to do. Not random guy from this film though.

Great review. Think the artist theme is visited again in a later anthology and crosses with another story in this. I liked the train crash idea,on first viewing, I loved the twist at the end,obviously plot twists have become the norm, now,but not so in 1965. I try not to put too much of today's logic into watching these films,best viewed as escapism..😂

Is that the one where the guy draws pictures but the people in them can die if the paintings get damaged (or something)?

The Happening (2008) is a killer plant movie. The concept is better than the actual film though, in my opinion

Nice. Since recording the vid, I've seen a modern one called 'The Ruins'

The Day Of The Triffids is a classic, but a bit corny, not a personal favourite of mine. For killer plants i recommend the original Little Shop Of Horrors from 1960 (not the 1986 musical remake, with Rick Moranis). Be warned though even though i love the original, it is a comedy horror.

Day of the Triffods has a TV mini series version which is apparently good too

I didn't know about that, i'll keep an eye out for it.

A KZfaq channel called PizzaFlix posted the original Little Shop Of Horrors earlier tonight if you want to see it free, if you don't mind not having extrs features. I often try and watch stuff free, before i decide if it's worth paying for. KZfaq, and a certain few sites have lots of full length free films, including some classics.

@jonbolton3376 You can get the newly restored BBC version put out on Blu-Ray. It has the same viewing notes as the 2005 BBC DVD. Plus, The Day of the Triffids is directed by Dr. Who Television Director David Maloney.
