Nicolas Winding Refn joined the Film Society to discuss his new film 'The Neon Demon.' Film Society Free Talks are sponsored by HBO.
Danish-born filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn returns to our free talks series to discuss his latest film, The Neon Demon, starring Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, and Keanu Reeves, which opens in theaters on June 24. Refn first hit the movie scene with the violent and uncompromising Pusher (1996), which he made at age 24. He has since gone on to write and direct nearly a dozen titles, including Drive (2011), which earned him the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival as well as a BAFTA nomination. He returned to Cannes for Only God Forgives (2013) and again last month with The Neon Demon, in which Fanning plays an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles, where her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women willing to take any means necessary to get what she has. Refn will talk about the making of the film as well as his fascinating career so far and what’s coming next.

I saw a couple of interviews with him and thought he was a complete asshole. He gave me goosebumps because he seemed so creepy. But through this interview I realized the importance of allowing him speak and fully explain himself. The "big" interviews with a lot of audience and press always seemed more interested in talking about shockfactor and even cut him off a couple of times, this was more in dept and interested in the process behind the films. Great interview all in all, and Nicolas is more likable to me now.

He's my fav filmmaker by a distance. I was fortunate to watch "Drive-2011" a year or so after its release.... was going through a rough patch at the time, and I remember being blown away. Then I watched Valhalla rising and, later, Only God Forgives. I love his silent, brooding style of narration... his slow, intense pacing and his experimentation with color. I really want to watch him direct Aden Young in a film.

The images of the film, by themselves, are very refined, "artistic" - I agree with the concept of synthetic -, but the film is really stupid. Narcissism is an ancient theme. Why men have to change their idea on it? This is basically a teenage film that pretends to be a philosophical point of view on humanity. The subject is tiny little and particular but treated like It was universal. Where is the feminism? The perspective of a feminine future seems to be horrible. The problem is that men are incapable to see women in other way than lying in their beds. Beauty has no sex, no gender. But to understand it you have to reach a higher level of consciousness. It's not an horror movie. It doesn't provoke in me feelings of fear or anguish.
@tonyjunior3186

Anton Dionyso he didnt change any idea on it. The movie talks about how deadly beauty is and to what extent are you willing to go to in order to be beautiful. It's a horror movie because in a way that effort and attempt to stay and be beautiful disgraces humanity. Thus the movie doesn't touch on gender equality or sex or any of that, which I personally love because that subject has been deteriorated by the social media. It talks about how we, human beings, are crawling down that dark passage to accumulate beauty at all costs

It's not an horror movie. Maybe a splatter. Where is the suspense? I was not scared watching it and I didn't care about the girl's fate. It seems to talk about an hypotetical futuristic society. The subject of the film is not about the beauty but the worsening of competition in the capitalism. All films have a gender politicy.

@@Anton-fw2wb compartmentalising this movie into a genre is the biggest flaw one could make. It clouds your vision in fully understanding The Neon Demon as a whole.

A one hit wonder ("Drive") shows that he can make a good looking & well cast movie into a complete artistic bomb in "Neon Demon" . I think he's a pretentious f-ck who knows zero about scripts or stories, story structure, characters, pacing etc. He really needs to go back to Syd Field's screenwriting 101. If an NYU or SVA, USC or UCLA ostudent had handed this in as their senior thesis project, it would've been torn to shreds. Except for Fanning, the movie is a disaster, maybe the worst Hollywood movie I viewed in 2017. I did nothing but read scripts for an agency for 3 years and if I had approved this P.O.S. excuse for a story, I would've had my head handed to me & shown the door.
