Top Gun Maverick was a MUCH better movie than I anticipated. So much so that I felt I needed to do a theory on it. What are we theorizing about? The enemy of our protagonists. You see, they never actually TELL US who they are fighting. So, I'm going to figure it out for myself! Get ready to SOAR into some secrets!

Fun Fact: There is (or at least was) a hot dog stand in the center of the Pentagon, and was one of the busiest parts of the building. It was so busy that the Soviet Union thought it was the entrance to a secret underground bunker, and as such constantly had an ICBM pointed straight at that one hot dog stand.

Surviving being ejected out of a plane going Mach 10 is NOT possible in real life. So... simplest explanation is that it's a movie, and therefore not necessarily chained to the laws of physics. However, (and you may have heard this theory at this point), some people think that Maverick actually DOES die at this point and the rest of the movie is essentially a last dying "fever dream" where he reconciles with two of the people in his life that he felt most ostracized from (Rooster and Peggy), so he can die in peace, basically. Interesting, but I personally subscribe to the "it's only a movie" position.
@tronam
@tronam Жыл бұрын
@@carllyngholm5568 The only time a plot "flaw" takes me out of a movie is if I'm no longer emotionally engaged with it and any sense of verisimilitude is gone. In general I find the pursuit of them to be a pointless intellectual exercise that does nothing to enhance the experience and only distracts from it. Movies are artifice by nature and my suspension of disbelief only works if I can accept them on their own terms. Most of my favorite films are filled with contrived conveniences, unrealistic dialog and impossible circumstances, but I can usually forgive and accept all of that as long as they convincingly resonate with emotional or thematic truth. When watching a magic show I don't want to know how the tricks are done; I want to be tricked because my desire to experience a sense of wonder and amazement is why I went to the show in the first place.

Also, me being mexican, the movie never fooled us because there was a popular video by Luis Miguel, called La Incondicional, where he becomes a fighter pilot and, at the end of the song, he flies, you guess it, an F-5, the best our army had at that time... and still today. The Iran Nuclear Deal would allow Iran to enrich the uranium and build every component for a nuke and the only thing it doesn't allow is the final assembly. It's like how California bans automatic weaponry but they allow me to have all the components to assemble the weapon with no problem. Assembly takes a few hours. A nuke, maybe a few days.

Finally! Ever since watching the movie such a question had been bugging me. Especially when I couldn't identify the tags while watching. Still doesn't fill the gap of finding out the Darkstar wasn't in any way a legitimate plane. Rather by the looks of it based around the stealth plane of urban legend called the Aurora. For those wondering how Iran operates F-14s, prior to the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the US-friendly government had managed to arrange a purchase of 80 F-14 Tomcats along with their weaponry and equipment. Just a quick note: When they launched their revolution, they only got 79 of their jets, and the US canceled the shipment of the 80th plane and kept it. Also, this is why there are no more flying F-14s anywhere in the world except for Iran, because the US government in 2006 when they retired the Tomcat, feared that Iran would get spare parts to keep their jets in service.

I still think Matt Pat failed to answer the question “Why does it matter if we know who the enemy is?” In their review of the movie, Chapo Trap House comes to the conclusion that the anonymity of the enemy is essential in order for the studio to create a nostalgic unifying feeling that calls back to simpler times when most Americans were not very informed about our government’s foreign opposition, and rather were willing to accept a blind patriotic stance against those they believed to be threats to the nation. In obscuring the enemy, the movie is able to recreate this we against them divide where we the viewers are all forced to be on the same side due to the simple fact that we do not know enough about our enemies to question how they are being presented to us by our leaders.

The first had the soundtrack, Maverick had the nostalgia. The first film was obviously NK, back in the day I argued in bars with my friends about it. But the Iranian Tomcats have been heavily upgraded to the point that Maverick couldn't fly it. Also a lot of them are missing replacement parts. He'd have a better chance flying in a MiG-25. Which would indicate Syria. It is Iran though, obviously. Also the film lacked "Danger Zone", it should have been on loop.

It's crazy how the filmmakers of Top gun maverick knew that the original wasn't that good and decided let's make a good movje this time and recognizing that Tom Cruise is getting old and more of a mentor than a hotshot newbie" and it totally paid off, amazing.

I love both movies, but my favorite is still the original.

@Man with hair it's not bad, it just wasn't that good. Don't get me wrong a lot of scenes like the end or goose's death are really good but at points it gets really slow. Maverick also had slow points but they we're usually related with Tom Cruise's journey, but the original one's slow points were kind of bland and eh. Just my opinion though.

I felt the same exact way about this movie, I didn't really like the original but my dad and I watched this one and we loved it, we reminisced about our time in service and it became a good movie for us and we ended up loving it.

According to a calendar that Maverick taps near the very beginning of the film, the movie takes place Oct-Nov of 2019, which is the year the movie was supposed to be released but was put off until 2022.

It's great to see more and more people recognizing the stereotypes. The Middle East is really nothing like we in the west have been taught. This video pointed out even basic geography is misunderstood. The big one in recent memory was Genshin Impact and its new Sumeru region.

0:44 My complaint about the original Top Gun is that the dog fighting is pretty hard to follow, Top Gun Maverick fixes that!

Never thought Id see the day that Matpat does a theory based on recent real world events for a video, and its on TOP GUN MAVERICK!!! This film was what got me so interested into military planes and arcade games with military aircraft like the Ace Combat series and Project Wingman

You missed the most interesting thing about the Pentagon food court. Those fast food workers had to have security clearances at one point in time.
