Terry Kath WAS Chicago, or at least a huge part of their sound. When he died, so did their sound. I remember listening to Chicago Transit Authority back in the day and being blown away by the awesome guitar playing and horn section, so innovative at the time. A lot of people probably got hooked on Chicago because of Colour My World but for me that first album was unbeatable and Terry Kath was the star of that album. Great to see him get the recognition he deserved and i can't wait to see this movie.

Love Chicago. I became musically aware in the 80s and once I heard Cetera's voice on the radio, Chicago became my band. As a fan, I began to research to learn more about the band. Come to find out, there had been a guitarist named Terry Kath and he died from a gun shot accident. I began to get all the earlier Chicago albums and listened to them and realized that this was a different sounding band in the 70s. They were jamming and very very good. The horns, drums, bass, vocals, and yes guitar all very top notch. Oh, how I wish Terry was still here playing his guitar and singing his songs.

Terry Kath was the Heart and Soul of Chicago. They were never the same without him. 25 or 6 to 4 is arguably the greatest recorded guitar solo of all time and yet if you watch Chicago at Tanglewood in 1970 he actually blows the studio version away. The guy was an absolute beast.

I will never forget that tragic January, Monday morning in 1978, when I first heard the news of you Dad's passing. I was laying in bed, listening to the radio and trying to get ready to go to work at Hanna-Barbera Studios, in Hollywood. The DJ broke in with the terrible news. I was heart-broken, and I knew things would never again be the same. Our worlds changed forever that day. After years of enjoying his music, there would be no more anticipation of the next album with him; no more of his incredible and very moving music. Terry Kath combined such a strong, soul-filled and deeply lilting voice, along with amazingly ferocious and intricate guitar skills, that the combination of his talent was such that we were fortunate to witness it, once-in-a-lifetime. He truly was the heart and strong soul of Chicago. I can see him in your face, Michelle. All the best to you and your family.

Terry and the band were such BIG influences of musicians of my era. The 70s (my era) would have been so empty without them and without him. Plus, music got really lame in the 70s but reaching back and embracing the current allowed us to push on. Sadly, as most teenagers, my friends and I just assumed it would just be this way forever. If only... We knew every song and every word of every song. I'm still a little broken hearted over his passing, but listening to his music gives such a lift that we rise about the sadness and up into his world. Thanks Terry. I'm happy to shed a tear for him, his mates, his family and his music. Listen to "Free" and jump for joy. That's all there is to it.
@antonnym2144 жыл бұрын
It came across in his vocals and his music: Terry was pure soul. It blew me away when I first heard him in 1970's "Make Me Smile". WOW. It's easy to speculate on what would have been if he were alive today.... but as a Dad, ... its extremely hard to fathom what Michelle was left with to ponder,... to digest as a child. It brings tears to this old mans eyes to consider her loss. I hope this documentary gets made,... there are thousands of fans that died that day,... and this film could be our resurrection! I used to write letters to all the band members for years for their birthdays and at Christmas! I was just a teen ager when my dad brought in the mail. We lived in the country then. I was dozing and overheard dad tell my mom that I had gotten a letter from one of the Chicago's. I woke right up to go see! And it was a letter with your dad's autograph at the bottom!!! That gave me a high for weeks after! Got one from Walter too! I still have them! I loved the music. Your dad had this raw, down to earth bluesy sound in his voice and his 🎸 guitar!! Hi Michelle!!! Your Father was a great, great man. He was not only a polished guitarist, he was in a league of his own, and he did it with such subtleness. As this film trailer ended on emphasizing your Father's vice, don't let that be the focus of what he was all about. As a musician, your Father left many a polished musician in the dust. They were great in themselves, but could not even begin to reach the level of musicianship that your father had established. He was one-of-a-kind. He has left a great legacy, not only in his works, but in you as well. The greatness that makes you want to explore and learn about your father, and to pay him honor as his child, is the greatness that he left in you. Such a gift to posses. I am very honored to have met you, and your father even if it is through video. God Bless!

Terry had once of the most soulful voices I've ever heard. And to pair that voice with the amazing guitarist that he was, not to mention the songwriter as well, was such a musical gift that he shared with all of us. I was devastated to learn of his death. It was my senior year in HS. I grew up in small town in the South and often road around town (the only thing to do really if you weren't into the alcohol and drug scene) listening to Chicago on my 8 track tape player. To me, Chicago ended after 11 albums. Anything after was just filler and an imitation of what they were with Kath. I just couldn't believe it. I lost my mom at age 5, so I know what it's like to grow up with few memories of a parent and all the questions you must have and the desire to seek answers to them. I hope this film is a catharsis for you.

Somewhere during the mid to late 60's guitarist seem to have forgotten that they are part of a band and in particular part of the rhythm section and decided that the band was there merely as a backdrop for their soloing. Terry apparently never did.

@@pedroV2003 Well said gentlemen. My thoughts exactly of Terry Kath. Not to mention his vocals were wonderful too. He could do it all!

All Terry's are humble. I think.

well he was acknowledged leader though for sure in those days. (perhaps partly because he was main song writer with Lamm. Only "later", CMW was the start of Pankow's surge and then Cetera in late 70s/80s. Terry was physically big and that played a role. But that's what made it work. once he was gone, then you had the brass section, Pankow in particular taking power and conflicting with Cetera.

There were 3 Centers of attention in that group originally..with the horn section being the main identifying "Chicago" sound.Losing that Kath was a huge loss..an irreplaceable loss. It became worse when Lamm lost confidence in his song writing..someone even tried invalidating the horn section.. ridiculous. But it was a good run..

I am from the far east. As a teen in early 70s, I 1st heard Color My World & was blown away by his voice. His lead solo on 25 Or 6 To 4 was awesome with only his guitar & a Wah pedal. Gone too soon & forever be missed

Terry Kath WAS Chicago. Unforgettable musical personality. When I returned to listening to Chicago after 40 decades, it was to hear Terry's voice and guitar. It had followed and haunted me all this time.

I saw Chicago in 2004, in Vegas. It was at the Stardust, which doesn't exist anymore. They were phenomenal but I was born in 1965, and I grew up with Dad playing Chicago with Terry. Something was missing at that concert. He sang beautiful songs. Just beautiful. ❤

I stayed up till 3:30 in the morning last night watching the Terry Kath Experience documentary. First of all, Chicago's music was part of the soundtrack of my life in the late sixties and throughout the seventies. Secondly, the documentary was exceptionally well done, and even though I knew a lot of the story, I certainly didn't know all of it. Great job.

This documentary needed to be done. Ever since Terry Kath's tragic death his contributions have been memory-holed for some reason.

I saw Terry Kath and Chicago at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces NM, in 1972 or '73, when I was 13 or 14. Terry Kath was THE dominant feature. I was young, but I knew who made the songs work. I was 21or22, when I heard what had happened to him. I felt devastated. It was like a light had been taken away from Rock music. I KNOW that the light went out of the band, Chicago.

Chicago was one of my favorite groups growing up. I am now 70 yrs old. Terry's talent totally blew me away. I hope your journey of discovery was satisfying and enlightening. "Color My World" was one of the two songs my wife wanted in our wedding ceremony. It is still relevant today 50 yrs later.

Just watched your documentary through. Very well done and put together. Again, I hope you got to know your father in an intimate way. My father passed away at the age of 87 just 3 days after my 66th birthday. He had lost his father at the age of 11. The following year (1942) his older brother was drafted and that made him the man of the house 8 of his 9 siblings still at home. Quite a task for a sharecropper's son. Again, I am proud of what you have done to honor your father. And so glad you were able to find his guitar. That is an heirloom for the ages.

There is no doubt about it. Terry Kath was the heart and soul of Chicago. He was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He is by far, in my opinion, the best. He could make a guitar do things I never thought possible. When he died, Chicago as a band died with him. RIP Terry. You are sorely missed!

They toured together yes. Jimi and Terry jammed together also. At least one real to real recording was made casually. Unfortunately its long lost. Too bad. Can you imagine? Wow, priceless if it were found!

Watching this on AXTV made me go to iTunes and build a favorite "Terry songs CTA" playlist, from the albums he was on. I listen to it a lot to imbed into my mind and soul what a real band sounds like and how to build a good guitar solo. Maximum Respect ~ Loo
