Regarding the father of Helge: It's one of the things that often get overlooked by non-German watchers of this show. Helge was a young boy of about seven years in 1953. He must have been born 1945/46. That the direct aftermath of WW2, the occupation of Germany, the displacement of the German population from the eastern areas of (then) Germany... and the violation of a lot of German women and girls. When Helge's mother said that Helge might not be Bernd's, and not be from love... the German audience of a certain generation, or with a bit of historical knowlegde, did completely understand what she was referring to.
@AmarthwenNarmacil
@AmarthwenNarmacil 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And the name here basically confirms it 100%. I'm a bit astonished how many reactors don't pick up on that.
@Groffili
@Groffili 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmarthwenNarmacil Relevance. Connection. Most people who react to Dark, or shows like that, are not German. Most of these people, especially Americans, don't have that connection to "foreign" cultures, not even in the small way that we (Germans, or the rest of the world) have to American (popular) culture, through media, movies, music, TV shows. And that results in them not getting the cultural references that those of us who are immersed in this culture and history just understand more or less naturally. One example that is often mentioned here from the show is the "Raider" candy bar. Foreigners don't understand it. Some may notice the similarity to the well-known "Twix" bars... but ignore this tidbid. For us Germans (at least those of a certain generation... history is so fleeting), that's an important clue. During the 80's Mars Inc's "Twix" bar was introduced and sold in Germany under the name "Raider". There were massive advertisements campaigns for this product... we are shown one of the spots in the show. In the 90's, the name was changed to the global standard of "Twix". Again, there was a massive advertisement campaign promoting this name change. That's part of German history, very specific German history. When a German (of a certain generation, we are getting old) sees "Raider", it means "80's". Seeing a discarded "Raider" wrap in 2019 gives us the sign "Oops, there's something weird going on here." But for outsiders, this doesn't have any immediate meaning.

@@Groffili I don't see what that has to do with German "culture". I would understand if Americans don't pick up on the Raider stuff, but a child being born a few months after the end of a war being a child to rape is not something that is special to one culture, but pretty common throughout history. And for example, raping slaves was pretty common in the US back then. Also especially with that family tree shown, the father is clearly Russian.
@Groffili
@Groffili 2 жыл бұрын
@@benediktmathes2528 It's more "history" than "culture", but you cannot completely seperate the two. It's just what you generally "know", even recognize on an instinctive level about something. I know that this is a big generalization, and I also know that not _all_ non-Germans, foreigners or Americans are like that. But there is a general cultural trend. Stereotypes do exist for a reason. So it is in general terms probable to say that for Americans to have a view of WW2 in Europe that consists of noble G.I. storming the beaches of Normandy, fighting against the evil Nazis in the Battle of the Bulge, killing Hitler and returning home to celebrate with a parade up the 5th Avenue. Knowledge of the war in the east is most likely limited... because the USA weren't directly involved. Knowledge of the civilian side will be even more limited. Sure, such events can be concluded... but they won't come instantaneously to the mind. Perhaps there isn't even a connection between 1953 and 1945 made. It is not relevant for someone from the United States. For a German, this relevance still exists, even if the impact and importance diminishes. My age-group was already a generation removed from the war... but we had our parents who were directly impacted. For young adults today, this is even more distant history, but it is still taught in schools as _our_ history.

While Dark has prominently adopted motifs from Goethe’s “Faust” with the poodle / Gretchen / Greta Doppler I just came to realize another analogy, as when Adam is depicted as “evil” for wanting everything to be destroyed. It recalls to, when the devil in “Faust” explains who he is: Ein Teil von jener Kraft, Die stets das Böse will und stets das Gute schafft. […] Ich bin der Geist, der stets verneint! Und das mit Recht; denn alles, was entsteht, Ist wert, daß es zugrunde geht; Drum besser wär's, daß nichts entstünde. A part of that power Who always wants the evil and always creates the good. [...] I am the spirit that always denies! And rightly so; because everything that is created Is also worth perishing; Hence, It would be better if nothing was created at all

Watching this reaction felt so bittersweet because these are coming to an end, but then you drop the more-Dark-content-in-the-future announcement? Woohoo! And isn't this montage just absolutely...THE MONTAGE. The goosebumps. Brain turned to pudding. Next episode's montage stabs you in the heart too - can't wait to see what you thought about it. No comment on the final episode. Not ready. Never ready. I have absolutely no idea what to remark on this ep, except maybe I've always found it interesting how the two worlds both mirror and also complement each other, in a way? Talking about the time soldiers in particular. You see one half of the gang with Adam, and the other half (more or less) with Eva, e.g. Magnus and Franziska with Adam till the end, but Bartosz dead, but alt-world Bartosz recruited by Eva while Magnus and Franziska gone; There's a Noah in team Eva but no Agnes (and no Ellie!), and the opposite in team Adam; og Claudia having to put pieces together herself, Egon completely in the dark until the last moment, whereas they seem very much aware of the plan in Erit Lux and even working together. That also made me think of background characters like Jana - what happened to her in the alt world? Did she leave Tronte like she wanted to in Adam's world? Did she die? Was Tronte himself around very much? Did any of it affect the subtleties of Ulrich's character? He did leave his wife and three kids to be with someone else, which the other Ulrich didn't. What about Ellie and Noah? The little communication gap that might've made the whole Charlotte thing possible because of og Ellie not being able to speak is not an issue in the alt-world, so how did baby Charlotte get separated from her parents? Did she at all, did Ellie and the baby end up under Tannhaus' care somehow. Not all of it is necessary to know because the main plot is set in stone as you've seen, but lots to think about if you really want to dive deep. But ugh, what a fantastic episode.

It’s just nuts that bartosz had kids with his own great aunt. And Jonas and Claudia have a sister in common. And bartosz is the great great great grandfather of Jonas. In fact all the gang descend from Bartosz lol. Jonas dad is also his great great grandson. It’s funny when you start looking in how they are related lol. I might make a chart for each character and how every other character is related to them lol. Bartosz become my favourite character in season 3, he’s just so naive and tragic. Him and Claudia cos she’s just amazing.

Regarding the morality of Adam and Eva: As with all of the stories, all of the characters in this show, it's never clear cut. Light and shadow, good and evil... it's all a matter of perspective. But I have to admit that my personal perspective had shifted over several re-visits of the show. I used to tend more to Adam's side. An end in terror is better than a terror without end. As it was said several times in the show: this isn't right. The whole existence isn't right. It's a tumor. It should not be. This whole "loop" is a perversion of existence, a Frankensteinian monster. Eva's position appears to be more selfish. She isn't "pro life"... look at all the death she causes. She is "pro-existence"... she cannot accept that no existence might be preferable to a constant cycle of horror. A cycle that isn't natural, but constructed, by herself. The guardian of this labyrinth. She, more than the scheming Adam, orchestrated this whole story. Adam reacts, plans to bring the loop to the point of his desire... but Eva CREATED the whole loop, as a loop. Eva is selfish. She destroys the world and countless lives, with the main reason that her son can exist. Adam on the hand wants "salvation" for everyone. Release from this bondage. Relief. Sweet oblivion. Right? Wrong. He's selfish, too. Because there is no loop. No cycle. Time and existence is still linear. There still is a world outside of this "knot". A world before, a world after. There is no loop. No character ever goes back to the same point in their existence. They might go through situations again, that they already experienced... but as a younger self. They might know about events that will happen, by either experiencing their older self being part of it, by being told or reading about it, or by pure inference. But never can they be in exactly the same situation twice. There is no loop. They live just one life, from birth to death. Just like any other human outside of the story. And Adam doesn't care about that. He only sees his own story, his own pain... and he doesn't care that there are billions of lifes that were, are and will be not a part of the knot. Adam is wrong. More wrong than Eva. And him being wrong makes the whole solution of the story so much more satisfactory.

Ok, I have a question, that is not answered in Dark. Maybe someone knows? Helena Albers gets the abortion in the 50's. She names herself Helena Albers. Katharine 's father is Hermann Albers, the sheepfarmer in the 80's. So..why is he called Albers? Did he take Helena 's name, or.. a theory I've heard: is he her brother? Egon said he did not see Hermann as someone who is religious... Just a Theory, it's just weird he has the same name, then again..so does Alexander Tiedemann (but he has a reason too)

I watched it quite a lot of times, but I never thought old Egon brought Hannah to his younger self in the past. I always had the idea that since Eva's way of "putting pieces in it's place" is rather crude and forced that old Egon did the deed with Hannah - consensualy or less so... it seems to me Eva doesn't much care for the way things are done (see how the Origin goes around both worlds killing people in cold blood), as long as everything happens as it has to to keep the loop going. So even though it seems rather cruel, old Egon raping Hannah and getting her pregnant with Silja always seemed possible to me...
