Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

What a great interesting and well spoken interview. I applaud Ken for doing this. I began learning filmmaking only in the last couple of years after going on permanent disability because of cancer. It’s never to late but better when you still have your health. Appreciate this very much, Pete

Yes Pete you go...believe in what you're doing..I understand exactly what you're saying.(similar story). I had a girlfriend many years ago who was the co-writer of an Academy Award screenplay. Not the universe. God. The universe is a created thing. The universe is a term used by people who are afraid to learn who God is because that would change their life. But they go believing that they are somehow fearless and know where they're going. It was God. Not the universe.

A truly inspirational interview. Like Dr. Atchity I’ve spent a lifetime listening to people who said “no" in one way or another, all the while retaining my vision and listening to my own inner council. When a person has absolute belief in their vision they are already beginning to make it happen. We attract that which we radiate.

I think it’s all in your level of expectation. Your age could be a factor but if your not doing it for the right reasons there could be tremendous disappointment. However, satisfying your incurable urge to create there’s never been a better time to pursue filmmaking because all the tools are at your fingertips and you don’t need permission.

Ken is the classic Baby Boomer. His parents generation provided so much security, such a sense of security, so much financial or economic security that Ken grew up in a world where it wasn't a worry and far more, he had so much insecurity he could flaunt wanton insecure moves but know he'd land on a secure net with harness lifting him right back up anyway. Boomer Bridges never burn and if they did 100 other Boomer bridges were beside it anyway. For them, the only thing they didn't have was a feeling of insecurity which they understood as 'freedom' and I don't blame them for wanting to play with it, feel what its like and use it whenever they chose. If you are Ken's children or grandchildren's generation you'd nearly look at this from the entirely opposite worldview. You only knew trying to jump up and down on a safety net (you hoped didn't break) leaping for something secure to hold onto and you do not have a harness and rope. You only know freedom and you don't think its cool and exciting and call it 'directionless' and why would you want to write a script and get it made? OMG imagine the feeling, the feeling of security that you'd experience knowing what you'd be doing, where you'd be and what pay checks would be coming in a full year in advance! You'd have a real contract and job title and income to plan ahead a full secure year until that movie was wrapped up? In October of next year you have to do a 'press junket' or something and the airplane tickets are pre-purchased!? For a 20-something today they just wish they could taste that Security for a stretch.
@juicitron
@juicitron Жыл бұрын
this though- so many people aren't able to embrace insecurity to pursuit a creative life. people who are able to express this sentiment of sacrificing everything for creativity absolutely have some kind of nest they grew up in with plenty of security and thus if their creative pursuits fail, they have a backup plan. 20 somethings just out of college or in the workforce who don't have any of that, it isn't going to be as feasible for them to do it. so we need to admit things people don't wanna hear and it's that pursuing a free, creative, sexy lifestyle is dependent on having your life set up in advance thanks to the help of other people. nobody accomplishes anything of higher privilege by themselves, NEVER EVER

I could probably watch your channel if you only ever spoke to Ken! Love this guy's wisdom and insight: so practical, human, honest. Loved the "suiting up" metaphor and re-framing of rejection as just a path of "no's" that lead to the "yes" - so simple... actually, I just realised that's what I love about his insights: the profound simplicity.

I was with a shared trait or a common denominator held by young insecure MFA holders in US for 15 years to pursue my career in academic world and got a tenure position as well. But when I reached my goal, I realized the fact that I had to leave for my psychological safety, so I did. My goodness I've been freed from all these garbages that I hadn't known otherwise. I'm so grad now to become a real practitioner of art in the real world. Financially this life style is still so freaky but feeling definitely very rich. Hard to explain...

I understand the difference between he and his father. My mother is highly security motivated and actively dashes dreams (by personal insults and going after self esteem) that are not office, trade, rank structured or retirement focused. It is hard on the psyche, and if you falter (as is human) she is there to reinforce "I told you so". It's emotionally rough... But good for a writer's experience, ironically enough. Lol ... ugh... Haha. (Honestly, I would not have chosen this.) Ps. I work at a college, and my natural wonder at institutiins if higher learning have been hardened by witnessing how tenured professors behave (and often deliver as substandard work... not everyone... the biology profs tend to be stellar, but oof, so many of the others is a crapshoot). And almost all engage in academic senate politics from a perspective of ego. So I get him on that, too.
