This is exactly the video I have been looking for for years. I also make MTB videos but I’m off in my own little corner of the east coast where not many other people do it so I don’t have peers that I can really bounce ideas off of or learn and grow with it so this was so incredibly valuable! Thanks!

It is thanks to those kind of bts videos that you really show what it takes to make a great sequence. So much double / triple takes, switch gear double / triple takes again, trying creative shots, trying again.. I think it will serves a lot when you will have a client that doesn't understand the costs of doing those kind of videos. Awesome job Scott !

Insurance is one thing, but you would benefit from some cheap plexiglass to guard your lenses. It might even get you to take more hits like that
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Ben. I often think....hmm a UV filter wouldn't hurt in this situation, but stacking up too many filters and you end up with vignetting at the wider angles. Plexiglass would work, but one more thing to lug around the forest haha.

Can you talk a bit about lens angle selection, and maybe post when this is released (the full edit, that is)? Also, how do you go about setting mics to capture sound that seems believable during a drone or cable shot? I've thought about running an instamic on the rider, and one static mic to fade in, make louder for a pass by, but haven't put it to practice yet.

Hi Scott, Very cool to see the entire process and the amazing effort to get the cable cam rolling. I wish you guys could have captured that shot because it looked fantastic! I'm new to filmmaking and wanted to ask about one of the scenes with the speed ramp, transitioning from normal speed to slow and then back to normal. Ideally, the best would have 11:48 two shots - one in 120fps and another around 24fps. Is that correct? My question revolves around maintaining overall quality in the shoot/scene, retaining motion blur and the cinematic look of 23/24 fps, while also enjoying the smoothness of 120fps. In your experience, what do you suggest for achieving the best results in shots with varying fps?
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 6 ай бұрын
Cheers, thanks for watching. If I want to be able to speed ramp I just shoot it in high frame rate. It doesn't keep the motion blur if you play it at full speed but there isn't really another way to do it unless you shoot two different clips. It really depends what you are going for visually what the right choice is.
@fodsonmedia
@fodsonmedia 3 жыл бұрын
Another great one mate! I'd love to get some more specs on how you shoot, like was that 120p FHD or higher res? Also, did you put that tele lens on a speed booster or just an adapter? Is that wide lens a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 - and if so , what are your thoughts on it? Not that it matters hugely as gear is far from everything when it comes to filmmaking, I'm just super curious :) Cheers! /Fred
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 3 жыл бұрын
The 120 fps was the FHD variable framerate in the GH5, not the best quality slow mo, but the best I've got right now. The tele was on the metabones speedbooster. And yup that's the wide I use. Over all, I like it. You get a tiny bit of vignetting at its widest angle on the metabones 0.71 so you have to be careful if you are stacking filters on it. Otherwise it's pretty solid. Not nearly as sharp as the sigma 18-35 though. Hope that helps!
@fodsonmedia
@fodsonmedia 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScottBell Awesome, thanks for taking the time to reply to my questions, very much appreciated hey! The 120p FHD VFR was my guess too, but I figured maybe you could get higher res 120 with an external recorder or something. I use the same internal slomo on both my GH5 and G9 too, and it's good enough I suppose. Your shots looked better than mine though, which is what piqued my interest. Well done then! :) Cool, I also have the Sigma 18-35 on a Viltrox SB but am looking for something wider to go with it. Thinking about checking out the new version of the Tokina 11-16. Thanks for the heads up on the vignetting. Cheers mate, helps a lot!
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 3 жыл бұрын
@@fodsonmedia I went with the first version of the Tokina since it was a bit cheaper and optically pretty similar from what I researched. I'm going to try the GH5s to see how it's 120 fps compares to the GH5 when low light is an issue. Curious if you can crank the ISO a bit higher and still get good results.

How do you decide on the fps on the shots? For more wide angle shots do you use 24 and then higher on closeups that you plan to slowmo?
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what I need for the edit. Anything that is played in realtime is 24 fps and then I use a combination of 60 fps and 120 fps when I want slow motion. You can definitely over do it with slow mo, so I try to save it for moments when I really want the viewer to be able to see a complex movement the rider is doing or for dramatic effect. It's important to keep the pacing of a video high so people stay engaged with it, but a pop of slow mo here and there an really help a film breath if it's a lot of fast cuts. So I wouldn't say the type of framing really dictates the fps I use, more so the type of action. Not sure if that answers your question but hopefully some helpful thoughts.

@ScottBell

Hey, when I do drone shots or cable camera I will mount a microphone on the bike and record a separate take of the action with audio only. Prices to produce projects like this vary widely depending on the scale and scope from $5k-150k.
