Kelly's of Cornwall has released its second ad spoken entirely in the Cornish language - a challenge only compounded this time by an unpredictable seaside location and the starring appearance of a cow.
The ice cream brand released its first Cornish-language ad in 2016, which was followed on by an educational language campaign fronted by Dawn French this year. The idiosyncratic format has been a success for Kelly's in a market where it battles with global conglomerates with bigger budgets, such as Unilever's Ben & Jerry's and General Mills' Häagen-Dazs.
For the 2017 iteration, incumbent agency Isobel reunited with the original director Alex Turner to create a spot paying homage to three distinct Cornish personalities and households: the surfer chick, the farmer and the family.
Each is housed in their own personalised beach hut on the Cornish shore and each has a favourite flavour of ice cream; in perfect Cornish they explain why they favour either Honeycomb Crunch, Clotted Cream or Salted Caramel Chocolate Brownie.
For the summer ad, Isobel and Turner refined the original spot's casting process.
"We stripped the script down, sent it out and we got people to actually learn their lines," said Ben Stump, creative director at Isobel. "For the first ad, we were getting people in who were trying to speak Cornish on the day, and it didn't work at all. We ended up having to do weeks of casting."

Where on earth did you get your facts from? 500 people is the number of NATIVE SPEAKERS, that means speakers who's first language was Cornish. There are 3,000 fluent speakers and many more speakers who aren't fluent yet.

How do you think opera singers perform in half a dozen languages without speaking them fluently? It is possible for decent actors to pick up dialogue in another language. They even do it in completely made up languages like Klingon or the one on Avatar.

It was a good advert, and possibly the first time I've seen Cornish on Scottish television. (Other than obvious programs on Cornwall or the Celts.)

Has Cornish been heavily influenced by English? Because it sounds like they’re speaking Sims. Imo, if they’re first going to “revive” the language, don’t do it half-assed; do it properly. Unless my hypothesis is completely wrong and untrue; otherwise I stand by the first section of my comment.

The woman at 2:02 does pretty well. She sounds slightly Welsh so she has the kind of singsong most native speakers of Celtic languages have. But this all academic. All languages (other than uncontacted tribes) are influenced by others. Once you get past a certain point, like modern Hebrew did, then no says that it's just LARPing or mangled Yiddish (in Hebrew's case) or whatever, they just get on with speaking it. This has begun happening with Cornish, may long it continue.

Cornish died out 250 years ago and is being revived. There is going to be an english accent to it just as the average irish speaker outside of the gaeltacht has an irish accent when speaking gaeilge. You can look up old recordings from monolingual irish speakers and hear the difference. That's the price you pay for reviving a language that has been systematically destroyed and replaced with english.

@@MrRomero00 Cornish was being spoken well into the nineteenth century which is far less than 250 years ago.

@@thursoberwick1948 You're using this word "processed" without realising that there's a very strong association between dairy and certain cancers. Yes I would like to see animal abusers put out of business

@@isaweesaw What a joke... Save the Earth by using more factories! There is no such thing as "vegan ice cream", it may be some kind of frozen dessert, but it is no more icecream than a cow is a salad. I wouldn't worry about abusing animals, they're already abused for political and religious points by yourself. I mean how better for the wealthy office based class to show their hatred for those who work with their hands than to put them all out of work. Maybe they need re-education camps and self-criticism sessions? That would be so good for the Cornish economy.
