We have a good population of these guys in northern WI, when we have a bonfire and stand around talking smart the squirrels like to glide across the opening from tree to tree, going right over the fire pit. Not close enough to get hurt, but definitely close at times. They are amazingly quick in flight and if youre not looking up right then you will miss them. Love these little creatures of the night.

Found a baby out of its nest stuck in the creek when I was a kid. I wrapped him up in my shirt to dry and keep warm, and my mom brought a medicine dropper and milk next day to feed him. He was a baby, not weaned on solids at all. We took him home, raised and weaned him, then returned him back to the wild. Loved that little dude. Hope he found a mate and continued his lineage.

I've had a Southern Flying squirrel for over a year that has almost no use of her rear legs. She was wild and mean at first but now tame. Little by little she gained my trust and now she loves us. She has a strong personality and will not be forced to do anything she doesn't to do. If she doesn't feel like playing, then forget it. She will only come out on her terms.

We have flying squirrels in Louisiana, but not plump, chubby ones like yours. The further north one gets, the bigger the specimens of mammals get. Smaller mammals suffer much more heat loss than larger ones, and in tropical climates, many individuals don’t hibernate, therefore they don’t need to fatten up.

I have SO MANY cool flying squirrel stories! I know where 100's of them are. I love tracking them! During the cold weeks sometimes you get lucky and find a nest with multiple trying to keep warm. They are absolutely ninjas btw!

@@kayluhluh6973 I wasn't the one who made the original comment but I think what op says makes sense. There's a species called a flying squirrel that most people (I guess) have heard of and thus got used to the idea. Particularly so because they are often featured in nature documentaries because they're obviously cute and quite unusual. As for squids "flying" was observed only recently (now I remember I heard of it in the Netflix show "the earth at night") and probably mentioned only in that one documentary, since they were the ones who discovered it, so far.

I work the swing shift and get home from work around midnight, one of these little guys was climbing the walls in my bathroom one night when I got home from work. I had often wondered what crazy bird was chirping up in the trees around my house at that time of night. I didn't know they lived in the pacific north west. I'm guessing my kitty was hoping he'd found a playmate and brought him home to play....the squirrel wasn't interested and didn't look back when I released him back to the trees.
