Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

LA: you can literally pitch a tent on almost any sidewalk and live there, but god help you if you set a tripod and camera down.

And take a dump in front of the LAPD. You'll get hogtied if you are caught filming a KZfaq video without a permit (according to the Film LA rules).

Woooo boy ..do I know what Adam is talking about . I was shooting at a federal park and the park police started racing behind my actor as he was running in the scene. I ended up using that chase in the movie. After speaking with him.. he sat with us until we got the shots we needed. I’ve had to talk my way out of a lot of potential shut downs without a permit. Adam is right.. be nice..approach the person/persons that look like they may call the cops or shut you down. Include them if possible in what you’re doing. One lady very similar to the one Adam had in his apartment Scene was very nasty and mean..after telling her one of the actors was the brother of Chris rock, I asked her if she wanted a picture with him with the prop weapons. She agreed. And we were able to finish our shot and get off the property. It’s not easy to do. But it can be done just by being respectful, calm and just plain nice.

It's funny because I only had a problem once when we were shooting too. The good thing here in my country is that if you're not disturbing the peace and not preventing anybody from using public property you don't actually need permits and for privet property all you need is permission from the owner or manager. But one time we were shooting a music video and 5 of the 6 scenes were supposed to be shot outside during the night and 4 of the scenes were good since we didn't need to sync sound so I just told the small crew and cast that no extra noise or I would shut us down. So we shot the 4 scenes with no problems and left the 5th one for last where we needed to use sound for sync just in case anyone called the cops and by that time we had already gotten all the footage we needed but we were done quickly so I guess nobody called anyone. But one other time we were shooting a scene for a short film also down town and we were almost done when the cops came and they were really nice they asked if we were just about done because someone called about disturbing the night peace (we weren't and everyone was quiet as a mouse someone just didn't like it) and they said they didn't wanna deal with paperwork and if we were just about done that we should just finish quickly and it's fine. So they hung out there for another 15 min and then left and we were done in the next 10 min so we just packed up and went home. The funny thing is that you can actually ask the police to help you since if you need to shut down a small area and it was during the night the permit would be free and if you needed the police to help you can ask them for help and they do it for free most of the time. A friend of mine actually asked for a police car and two uniforms and they said no problem and helped them shoot a scene. Really nice guys from the commanders to the guys working the streets all you have to do is explain what you're doing and they usually think it's cool. Even one time we were shooting a music video on a field in the middle of the forest with solders running around in uniform and guns and rifles we called ahead and told them what we were doing and we had permission to shoot there and that we'd be setting of smoke grands and that we just wanted them to know if they got any calls. They were supper nice about it and said that it's so nice that we though of them and it's no problem and if we need anything that we should just call. Nobody showed up just a couple of people form the nearby town who were interested in the action.

What are your thoughts on filmmaking without a permit?

I think if it's a 2,3,4 man show in a secluded location, and just for the day. Take the chance, but i would never try to film in a location that draws attention without a permit.

In Jersey (except for 1 town) a permit is needed... and insurance I believe. Just recently I was shooting some B-Roll footage (for my homeless documentary) near Newark Train station and a transit cop politely walked over to me to inform me that I could not film on the property without a permit. He also gave me a phone number to the film commission who handles permits for filming outside/near the train station and/or railroad tracks. Jersey has strict filming regulations. Probably not as strict as LA but nobody wants to get their equipment confiscated lol. I'm also working on a film starring my brother and nephew and we do most of our shooting indoors. There is currently no rule in Jersey for filming on your own property, indoors, back yard etc. My short horror film with my daughter was filmed at one location(our home).

I found the whole shooting the film without a permit and having to shoot the scenes during the night trying not to get caught to be very interesting. That sounds funny about the guys not even checking to see if you had a permit.Certainly sounds like an adventure, though it sounds like you were taking some chances.

In Los Angeles, CA. and in the not so great State of California you MUST have a permit in order to do any type of filmmaking. The film industry is a heavy market and every company and hood in each California cities wants a piece of the that Hollywood Pie. $$$$$$ If you caught doing any filmmaking anywhere in the streets or even in your own backyard in your California property. The police will escort you all out and possibly face fines, jail time and confiscation of equipment. Go ahead, film in California without a permit. You may get caught red handed.

Wow lucky dude. I think needing a permit is stupid unless you are shutting down a street or a business or filming people in the background of your shots without there consent. Other than those things you should be good. Small features for KZfaq I believe we should be left alone. Filming in national parks respectively I think we should be left alone. Filming in our own homes, we should be left alone.

Hey. There are reasons permits are required. Bribing and cunningly getting around laws of having pemits is not fair for others who have to pay for you not respecting law. So many lies from this guy... omg ... would never trust him again... he is such a crooked individual 🤥 prancing his illegal success...
