It's something that comes with growing up with the internet as well, unfortunately. With kids growing up online, they will absolutely believe that the internet is real, and will grow up thinking so as well. It's all thanks to early brain development. When something like a certain lifestyle is learned as a child it is damn hard to forget as an adult. :( Edit: I fear to see what Gen Alpha will become at this rate

About the filming in public, girl. I work in a grocery store inside one of Europe's biggest shopping mall and tell me why ive been told that during the day (i work graveyard shifts) my colleagues get harrased by people filming them on a daily. This one time a friend had these two guys put a phone in her face and handed her a bouquet of flowers and said "we just wanted to thank you for your hard work" then quit the recording, took the flowers from her, dumped them on a random aisle and left. The flowers were from our store, they picked them up just for the video, didn't pay for them, and left them for her to put back. And ofc the damn power imbalance at play: you are working, you cant be rude to a customer. Especially if they are recording you. Can you imagine if she would have said something? Viral. People in the comments tearing her to pieces like "wow what a b, women nowadays, they were being so nice they got you flowers" Insane. We are insane. Losing our capacity to have normal healthy interactions with other humans, behaving inappropriately cause trying to gain internet followers is more important.

Personally I don't think that girls in video being filmed without their consent were "mean girls", I think they were just reacting to being filmed by a stranger influencer or not. Something similar happened to me and my sister when we were just shopping in a target. We both gave her the middle finger because she had her phone pointed at us and was giggling with her stupid friend. The girl filmed us and followed us around the store with her friend for what felt like forever. I think people should be more conscious/considerate of other people's personal space in public places. I think people have forgotten that other people in public are not there for their entertainment.

This world we live in now is so scary! I’m literally a nobody and was filmed by three random men when I was in the middle of WORKING at my old job. I do groundwater testing and sampling and was out in public when three men just shoved cameras in my face and followed me around, filming me, my work vehicle, and not saying ONE WORD. I kept asking them why are they filming me, to please stop, and they just ignored me. I ended up calling my boss and he drove down to the site and tried telling these guys to leave me alone, then they started harassing him and calling us really mean names. It was so creepy and weird and I felt so incredibly violated. The crappiest part is that it was posted on KZfaq without my consent and there’s literally nothing I can do to take it down. We even called the police, but they can’t do anything about it. The police even said people do this and purposely harass/torment individuals to get a reaction to post on KZfaq to gain likes/views. Such a scary world we live in! Keep yourselves educated and safe, and DO NOT encourage or be the individuals recording/taking pictures of strangers in public -__-

Like my husband and I don’t even post pics of our baby on our private instagram accounts. The fact they people think they can just filming a stranger on their job or someone’s child in the first place is awful but the fact they’ll keep filming/trying to film even after being asked/told to stop. before we used to tell celebrities "don't be famous if you don't want your privacy taken away", we also said the same thing to social media influencers, now we have random everyday people being filmed for the most random things and now its "don't go outside if you don't want to be filmed". When does it end?? When I do something embarrassing in public for example if I fell, I have to be worried about being hurt, but I also have to be worried about it being filmed and posted on the internet. The government takes too long to changes laws surrounding social media (and in general), and there has to be a way around this, to where we can do something about being harassed online, especially if something was posted about you without your consent. I'm aware that this could cause other issues and tbh they're all valid, I just feel like something has to be done.

In Europe just the thought that one can be sued for posting content with someone on the background who didn't consent, is sometimes enough to, at least, make them take down the content if it goes viral for the wrong reasons. Something like that in the video would've easily been avoided in Europe because the influencer probably wouldn't have posted it in the first place. My point is, there are other countries where laws have been made to protect people's privacy so why don't we all just look around and see what works and what doesn't and learn from it? It's a globalised world, let's take the good and posive from each other

It’s very interesting to me that people feel very comfortable filming, posting, and commenting on strangers publicly, but not comfortable at all talking to people. If you want to compliment someone, just go compliment them. Don’t film them secretly and compliment them from a creepy video. If you want to tell someone to knock something off (and you’re not in danger), go tell them politely. If you’re making snap judgments about someone and then posting it, that’s bad for everyone, and makes a bunch of people upset in comments for what might’ve been a miscommunication or a harmless situation.

I ended up in a random guy’s tiktok bc he used footage from my friend’s vlog from years ago before i decided i didn’t want my face shared on social media if i could help it. I got so uncomfortable when i found out that i re-downloaded the app just to comment and ask him to take it down. Other people in the comments were acting like my request was outrageous and i was being too sensitive. It really is terrifying that you could have a digital footprint that you don’t consent to and have no control over because it’s someone else’s “content”. Then when i tried to report it on TikTok there’s no equivalent of “I’m in this picture and i don’t like it” so if you end up in the background of some random’s video, there’s no easy way of having it taken down

Unpopular opinion: I don't care about the original girl who created the video. Why is she filming complete strangers without consent? She filmed them first. So they filmed back. They acted how they deemed fit after being forced in a video they didnt ask for. They did not deserve to be doxxed or lose their jobs. Absolutely not. As for them filming back, I do this all the time when I dont want to be in random peoples videos. They quickly stop filming when I start filming them. I'm a millennial. I'm SOOOO glad you made this video! As someone who is plus-sized, autistic, and tends to dress alt, the thought of being filmed by random strangers in public and posted online when I'm just minding my business is literally my #1 fear. What if I have a public meltdown due to overstimulation and some bozo films and posts me labeling me a "Karen"? What if I'm stimming and someone records and posts me claiming that I'm on drugs? What if someone snaps a photo of my outfit and posts it as "cringe?" People really need to think before filming someone without their consent because you don't know what that person may be going through. Another good point that some other commenters mentioned is that some people may not want to be publicly filmed and posted online for their own personal safety (stalking victims, hiding from their abusers, people in witness protection, etc.) The legal system is so slow to change esp with internet laws. This is where I think TikTok and other social media platforms need to step up and enforce some basic guidelines for content like this. Something as simple as requiring users to blur people's faces and removing videos where the subject in the video clearly stated that they did not want to be filmed but got posted anyway would stop so many of these problems 🦆

There are a few different legalities in america actually. For example, the rights to your image don’t necessarily belong to you but to the person who owns the image. So if you didn’t take a certain image of yourself and it gets circulated, you have minimal control over it, unless say it took place in a private residence. Another caveat is you cant *sell* an image of someone in public if they are identifiable, that would require consent. Most social media posts arent *selling* them so theres no expectation of privacy legally :/ So tldr; selling of images is illegal unless already taken in a private setting but not the *usage*

And also I think that she was perfectly aware that her Tik Tok would gone viral, she put the right hashtags in order to do so. 🦆

That influencer is the main problem here. Instead of moving away or telling those “mean girls” to stop, she deliberately filmed them in specific way to garner attention and sympathy likes Just to play the victim card and later stroke her ego when the internet gets riled up at those “mean girls” Overall, I honestly feel more sorry for those “mean girls”

@@coomerslayer420 I mean the girls could've easily told her to stop or move away themselves, and the influencer didn't need to "deliberately film them" in any way as the girls' own immature actions spoke for itself. I believe if you're doing something rude/immoral then people filming you as proof is justified. But the OP is right in that the girls are young and have yet to carry the responsibilities of an adult which includes acting maturely, so a little more empathy can be given out to them. That said it's always good to learn when young that your actions have consequences, not referring to doxxing and death threats ofc as their behaviour isn't criminal enough it should apply there.

@@coomerslayer420 Just because someone is an influencer doesn't mean they're more responsible than the average person, even though they should be, because they hold more power than the average Joe. I highly doubt the influencer was aiming for them to be doxxed. She probably just felt insecure, because those girls were being immature and mean, and used her platform for validation. This pathologisation that influencers should be these perfect people is just weird. They're still people. Should she be held accountable and made aware of the dangers she just put those girls in? Absolutely. I don't like how influencers treat public spaces like they're their homes, and can understand why the girls would be uncomfortable being filmed. I would be too and think our image should be our inherit right. But these girls went about it so awfully, espescially considering filming in public is so ingrained in pop culture now. They could have said something if they felt uncomfortable but chose to demean and belittle instead, acting like young children. Your actions have consequences, and unfortunately these girls are finding that out the hard way. Don't agree with doxxing obviously, but that's how it is. Life isn't fair. Be mean to the wrong person, and you can find yourself in trouble for a long time espeacially if they're in power.

apologies in advance for the long comment but i want to share my experience! i've become very passionate about this topic since having this happen to me a couple months ago, and i feel your video did a great job explaining the consequences of recording people without consent! i was on campus after shooting a film for class and was EXHAUSTED, not looking or feeling my best, when suddenly these guys started following me. i was on high alert and called my mom letting her know i just wanted her listening on the other end bc someone was following me. turns out they were some of those "pick-up" influencers who go around getting girl's numbers, and although in the moment i didn't know i was being recorded, i suspected something was up so i just played along out of fear. not to mention, i have social anxiety so being on camera without my knowledge really messes with my head. :/ they cut out a lot from the video ultimately, like the cameraman following me even after the first interaction and also harassing me for my number, but the video has blown up now so it's out of my hands. thankfully most people aren't being mean to me in the comments, but i have received some creepy dms and sexually-degrading comments from people who have somehow found my account :')

It would be one thing if she just filmed a quick selfie on her phone - still potentially irksome for those caught in the background, but it's not INTRUSIVE to those around her - and honestly, had it just been a selfie, few people would have noticed or paid attention. But when you have a whole photo setup with a crew member, taking up time & space at a public event, yeah, people are gonna be annoyed. You're being disruptive & a distraction to the other people who came to enjoy the sportball (or concert/movie/pool/beach/whatever). Sometimes we would have to put a sign next to us when we were having meetups asking not to take photos (which ALSO didn't work!) Once you're on someone's phone/camera, there's no way to remove yourself unless you want to grab that person's phone and do it yourself (which is illegal and a really bad idea of course.) The only recourse that we had was to ruin their photos, by covering our faces, glaring, or otherwise making it very clear that we were being harassed in the hopes that the person would delete their photo or at least feel too shameful to show it off. And yes, that sometimes meant flipping off the camera or taking out our phones to snap photos back at them to make them feel how we felt. And just like the girls had mentioned themselves, I have also experienced people pretending like they were having someone take their photo in front of us, then aimed the camera at us to capture us instead. All to hide behind the excuse of "no no no I was just taking my own photo and you all just so HAPPENED to be in it too! Oops teehee oh well." This was a huge and pervasive conversation throughout the online community for our specific fashion, and I'm sure many other alt fashions too. Some had little signs or fans made with "NO PHOTOS" or some variation to use when someone chose to invade their privacy. When I see the clip of these girls in the background, I completely feel their frustration. I've been there and had all of the same reactions. I really can't fault them for it. (As an aside, every time someone politely asked for a photo we were more than happy to oblige. But if you're someone who's invading my privacy and ignoring my consent from the jump, I'm going to assume you have bad intentions and are probably a creep.)

I use to record or take pictures of random people for my snapchat in HS. I remember doing this to one of my friends and one day she went OFF on me in a Walmart, I didn't understand back then why she was so upset because it's not like anyone viewed my Snapchat stories. Now that this behavior has become normalized im so glad that I do not do it anymore because it truly is not normal. People cant just exist in peace and make human error outside anymore and that's scary.

Just yesterday my friends had taken a video of me while I had a horrible pain and then posted it after I told them not to. It’s scary how even those who are close to you record you without consent

I've seen so many other youtube channels say "they deserve it" and had to unsub because that kind of stuff isn't okay. Chopping someones arm off doesn't stop them from stealing guys😅 also people are becoming too comfortable with being vigilantes and ruining others lives this very dangerous and could even cost someone their lives 😢

also, hot take: I think that filming strangers and putting them on the internet is a very serious social fauxpas and a mean and shitty thing to do, just like making fun of someone. so no, I don't think Jackie is the victim here, even though she comes across as more likeable is this situation

I've definitely been in spaces and saw someone holding their phone in a way that definitely LOOKS like someone was filming me (I'm nuerodivergent and it could be paranoia) and immediately want to leave. If I tell my partner or friends or whatever that I felt like I was being filmed, they'll often ask if I want them to say something and the world is kind of scary, so I definitely say no.

It's super interesting what you said about PR apologies. Because I feel like it's very similar to the difference between neurotypical and neurodivergent communication. As an autistic person myself, I always try to explain my reasoning for doing something, while NT people apparently only want an apology, no matter if it's an honest one because everything else is an excuse to them.

same I have a habit of explaining why I did something and I get told that its an excuse, just apologize and don't do it again.

Exactly! I actually prefer getting apologies that are accompanied with explanations so that I can gauge whether or not my being hurt/offended was reasonable as I'm diagnosed with PTSD and I know I have certain triggers that need to be managed/processed. If someone just apologizes without explanation, I actually feel like they're just trying to brush it off/brush it away w/o doing any learning and communicating? Like, sure, it feels good to me temporarily to be immediately validated, but I'm more interested in the continuing health of our future friendship/relationship than in my present, transient feelings.

sorry to be the one to tell you but being a genuine person isn't a neurodivergent thing. many neurotypical people are also genuine people who hate lies, false promises, false apologies, fake people and fake friends. it is a really horrible thing for you to do to just say that anyone who isn't like you just just be a shallow horrible fake stupid person. sure some neurodivergent people are more literal and find politeness culture either harder to understand or less inviting. But there are literally thousands of books films articles essays about politeness culture and how stupid it is and how much everyone struggles with it. not just neurodivergents.

What I like about East Asian vloggers or any social media that they have is that they blur strangers on the video and I find that very respectful to the whole masses, I wish western media would adopt that so people identity would be safe.

I'm always confused for whenever something remotely interesting happens in public, all of a sudden people are taking out their phones faster than the speed of light. The thing is, is that even though recording people in public is legal, it's still kinda weird. The only thing I don't understand is how not blurring someone's face can lead people to find out information about that person. How does that work?

The truth is that you shouldn't have to move and wait for someones tiktok, It was 100% the influencers responsibility to ask if they were okay with being in the background and if not, move herself away to film. She was the one who chose to post it too while playing the victim of her own lack of responsibility. She could have just stopped, deleted and moved on or record a new one without the girls in the back. But no, just post it and put them on blast because they didn't want to be in your tiktok. Pitty.

even after covid was deemed "not a public safety concern", i still wore my mask in public for health and privacy reasons. i was getting harassed at my old job even when i wore the mask. now that people feel grossly comfortable recording others in public, it's really reinforced my belief that wearing a mask is still the right choice
