The fact that there are people called "Americans" in the US who are descended from them tho is the point. Those people's bloodlines are now considered American. The ones who decided to colonize it, the Europeans, called themselves Americans when they named the US--many denouncing citizenship elsewhere, but obviously not all. We had a lot of immigration and such since then. So you're not wrong, but I think you're getting a bit lost in the details rather than seeing the point. Which is that what is called the US/America was taken by people who called it America and called themselves Americans. Like how the British took things--but their population still has lots of people who immigrated there and are not descended from those Brits. Hope that makes sense? Edit: I'd also add that it's more than that, since even in modern day there are Americans fighting against Natives to take away and poison their land--so that colonization never ended, just changed. It's not only done by the Europeans now, or descendants of them--but can and is being done by many Americans in the name of things like "big oil". @@SeddieWeddie

I'm from mexico but I come from a very white skinned family and when I say my mom is PALE bruh she could pass as a white sheet of paper and no one would notice the difference xD but anyway, one time she traveled somewhere in the U.S and there she met some asian tourists and mind you, they are usually already very light skinned but for some reason they were just in SHOCK like, complete shock at the whiteness of my mom and her skin and they kept telling her how beautiful her skin was and how she has such pretty hands. They literally asked her if they could take pictures with her lol as if she was a celebrity (and she did! There's several pictures of my mom in the center of these asian women gathered around her hahah xD) what I'm getting at is that they found my mom's skin so pretty and unique and rare that they were like almost mesmerized by it. And I just feel like in general we are always complaining about being too white or too dark or too pale when there's people out there who find whatever it is that we are to be so beautiful and almost envy it. We should just learn to love and accept ourselves as who we are and how we came to this world goddam. Let's love ourselves! 💞

That's EXACTLY what it is! And I feel many of her white stans defended her when she was blackfishing because "Oh well at least she's using her platform to uplift the voices of black women!"/"She surrounds herself with black women and pays them, so it's okay!" when really it's not, and I feel like Ari probably relies on that to cover her white ass when she plays dress-up. I haven't seen it happen yet, but if her next couple albums take on a more K-Pop sound, she collabs more with K-Pop artists, and she starts surrounding herself with Korean/Korean-American women in place of all of the black women she surrounded herself with and acted like were her besties, then that will definitely confirm in my mind that all this is a game of dress up for her, and she's cleverly found a way to skirt around "controversy" by using the WoC she surrounds herself with as a shield to deflect criticism.

@@DJ_1981 yes, but she also deserves understanding and we should realize what is causing her ethical behavior so we can change in a manner that does not promote it. There is a lot of teasing in the white community when people of our race have pale skin and don't tan and a lot of people cannot handle the pressure. It is easy to sit in the bleachers and point at what she is doing wrong without understanding the pressure and bullying she goes through. Some may argue that nonwhite people have it worse, yes they do, but that does not change the fact that a lot of people are pleasers and it is emotionally draining to go against the grain. We really need more diversity and less strict standards regarding beauty, and that includes not bullying white people to be tanned and race bend. I think everyone is confusing what Salem was trying to say. If you tan, do you still look like your race? If yes, that's great. If you tan purposely to look another race, then profit off of, that's problematic. Colorism and classism is the issue here. My family comes from Cambodia, trust that I know about this issue all too well. The lighter you are, the more "attractive" you are seen as. I was given bleaching products as a child and it has ruined my skin and taken years to repair. I can't take off my ethnicity or skin color. Anyone whose skin doesn't have enough melanin can. Nothing wrong with being pale either. I grew up hating being Asian, specifically from a country that has dark skinned Asians and wanting to be a white woman because I was so pressured into not wanting to look my race because my features aren't desirable unless they're on a white woman. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look "sun-kissed" but it can look and be wrong and harmful to a BIPOC person. That's just how I see it and my experience. I love Ari btw but I see the point of this video and have seen it for years.

I like what you said „if you tan and still look your race that is not a problem” because I have a hard time seeing a problem in tanning. As someone from Europe, in my country it is a must that when you go on vacation, in country or abroad, you must come back tanned, the darker the better. Tan is just kind of a sign of good vacation. Also for people who arent from estern Europe, you have no idea how dark we can get if exposed to a lot of sun. Also getting a tan is kind of a thing in my country, not a lot, but just having some. I am really pale and I am always told to get a tan or go outside because I am pale. What I am trying to say is that in all countries we have this not normal skin color standard and we are kind of pressured to change it. In every country there is one, for white people is being tanner and for black/indian/ asian whiter. It is not this malicious thing that white people are trying to look a different race what it is, is just another wierd standard that every culture has.

@@gab1888 yeah but many white people don’t just tan. often if someone is blackfishing they change their hair, the way they speak (like getting a blaccent/using AAVE), and more to appear more black or ethnically ambiguous. that’s the problem, and that’s also when it’s obvious that it’s not just a “sun-kissed tan”. but it’s also not just blackfishing, some white people appropriate asian culture, indian culture, etc. and it changes with the trends, but they wear it like a costume and take it off (though these are the very things they make fun of).

I am from Nepal and I can sort of relate. I was/am lighter than most people here , partly due to genetics, partly due to me being an introvert that likes to hole up in my room, and I was praised for being lighter. And when I would go to play in the sun, people around me would tell me to be careful lest I got darker. I was so afraid of getting darker because of that that I used to lather so much sunscreen on me (well, I still use sunscreen but that's more for the health of my skin than color). The worse part was, I saw darker skinned kids my age or younger tell themselves and be told by their parents they would've looked better if they were lighter. I literally have had friends tell me that they were not as pretty as me because they were darker skinned. And it hurts me because nobody deserves to be told that their skin tone is not pretty because people are beautiful no matter their skin tone. And also because your skin is that color, whether dark or pale, because it serves a function to protect you.

In addition to Ari, Kim K and similar celebrities, I had classmates who started picking very dark shades after years of tanning. I know that tanning beds are considered addictive by some. Could there be some kind of psychological addiction to seeing oneself in a deeper shade? Also, didn’t Ari take a DNA that showed she had a good bit of northern African ancestry (as many southern Italians do)? Something similar was recently discovered in my family in that a DNA test showed our ancestry as being from a country that neighbors the country listed on immigration records

Not only has this helped me navigate discussing difficult topics, but also how to discern toxic people from those that are trying to help. And 'settlers' call it theirs as if they were born there, completely ignoring what they had done to get there. You use the term 'willingly' very lightly. I doubt if someone from another country that you couldn't understand aside from a weapon being pointed at you came to your house and told you to leave or d*e that you would call that an option, let alone something you were 'willing' to do. While it is possible to be pale in the winter & tan in the summer etc, due to being born in hotter climates of Europe and naturally having a less chance of sunburn, I have never (or seen anyone ever) naturally have my skin as dark as hers during the summertime. Ariana, girl, just put down the tanning spray bottle and just admit that your tan isn’t natural. You’re making Greek & Italian people look mixed when in reality we’re as white as the people who colonized North, central & South America. Yes, don’t forget Christopher Columbus was born in Spain and had an Italian background.
@trizgarcias
@trizgarcias 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. I am brazilian, with black, native, Arab and Italian great-grandparents/great great-parents and I am HELLA white bc I got more of the European side, but there is a side of my family where you can see they have Arab blood, their skin is considerably more tanned than mine, but I get a similar color, in a lighter shade, when I get sun exposure. No one believes I have those races in my bloodline, but you can see it perfectly in my great uncle's noses, hair, etc great grandpa was literally called Sahid Salom, yet I look like any other European. We have mixed backgrounds a lot in Brazil, but a considerable amount of people are just white. We can't even pretend to be something else, even tho we fall under the Latino category. If I stayed decades in the sun, my skin wouldn't have ever gotten as dark as Ariana's have. Neither would my Italian uncles or Arab cousins.

I’m tired of people using the “she’s Italian” excuse. First of all “Italian” is NOT a race, it’s a nationality (and she’s technically not even “Italian” she’s of Italian descent). And not every Italian looks the same: there are black Italians, brown Italians and blue eyed blond haired Italians. Being Italian doesn’t equal having certain default features. Ariana is clearly white but people still try to justify her because she’s a beloved celebrity

@@ariesgirl371 Honestly, it should depend on how deeply she could naturally tan. Some white southern europeans can tan really dark and I mean I saw her darkest and I've seen that tan occurring naturally on the beaches in greece, italy on friends/acquaintances. I obviously thinks it's damaging their skin but they CAN tan really dark. And no I don't think they think about race at all they are just tanning because it's a fun change every summer and also your hair lightens from the sun and it looks nice i guess. It's almost a white culture thing, just like being pale is in other parts of the world. But I'm not american that's why I said people should practice safety first and if they can do it safely so what? I dont care if someone uses a fake tan or someone uses hats and SPF 50 to stay pale.

Also she is Sicilian Italian and they are quite in south of italy. For example Dua Lipa is Albanian (southern european) and she is not that pale naturally I think she could tan deeply if she cared enough to. The thing with ariana is I think she stayed pale purposely because her hair on victorius would've looked ridiculous with a fake orange tan. And as a kid our parents obviously wouldn't leave us tanning and burning on beaches. It's difficult with her because we don't know her and we don't know if she can tan a lot but she also has very curly dark hair naturally which makes me think she might be able to handle the sun. If she was a northern blue eyed blonde baby I might be sceptical. I haven't talked to people of that phenotype but they mostly don't tan very darkly

In 2012, I spent a year as an exchange student at an American high school. I very much noticed the unnaturally white teeth and the preference for tan. And then as we were approaching Prom, suddenly all these students (mostly girls) were coming in with excessively noticeable dark tans; the teeth became even whiter; everyone looked sort of photoshopped... I was just recently looking through old photos again, and you would not believe how much I stick out in a group of white people for being a good 5 shades paler than everyone else. I was really not used to seeing teenagers changing their bodies in that way. Many of them were underage. You're not even legally allowed to bleach your teeth or tan your skin if you're under 18 where I'm from...

He struggled with that his whole life and found that as a way to see a nicer side of it, where people celebrated people like him instead of ostracizing and bullying them. I honestly don't think tanning in general is problematic, because there is a difference between going to a tanning salon and tanning artificially, and just going to the beach and getting really tan. I myself, get VERY dark in the sun after a few days at the beach, and it's not like i'm changing myself to look like a certain race. I personally will not share my views on the Ariana spectacle, but there is a fine line between going out of your way to change your skin color and just flat out wanting to look sun kissed.

I do think there is a culture of tanning, especially back in the era of 2005-2012, that is not focused on looking racially ambiguous, but rather about looking "sun-kissed" no matter the time of year. Like I don't think girls going for that Hollister surfer aesthetic in 2007 were trying to trick people into thinking they weren't white. They were trying to look like white girls who spent their days in the sun. Not a note on the ethics of that or on Ariana, just something I think should be included in the conversation about tanning.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with intentional tanning until the person does start to look racially ambiguous, or has the audacity to claim that’s how they naturally look. a lot of people fake tan because it’s almost like using makeup on your entire body - they want to even out their skin tone or hide ‘blemishes’ on their arms/legs, but that definitely doesn’t require going like three shades darker than when they started.

She is probably the biggest celeb who does this, but yet she is the one we talk about the least when it comes to blackfishing? Which is funny because she was one of the first celeb to start doing this. I think the reason people think of other celebrities such as Jesy Nelson and Rita Ora when we talk about blackfishing is because Ariana has been doing this so long, most people have only seen her with heavy bronzer and other makeup on. Also, Ariana has this good little girl persona which makes it hard for people to call her out when she’s done something wrong. She’s actually really shady (literally). *EDIT:* If you don’t think Ariana Grande was built by her team to project a good girl persona, you’re in total denial. Also as other people said, she also has a lot of talent. Despite her flaws, she is an amazing singer, so people often turn a blind eye on her crimes. People also turn a blind eye on her crimes because she is good looking and very talented. Ever heard of pretty privilege? It is a real thing.

Cultural appropriation is when a privileged group (white people) take a feature from minority groups and make it a trend or aesthetic. However it is a big thing in America and is considered very offensive. There is a huge difference between appreciation and appropriation, and people really need to find that distinction. People get away with cultural appropriation so much that they begin to call out people who actually appreciate the culture. Example: I am in the Chinese language department at my uni. We had a celebration for the Mid Autumn Festival, and we all dressed up for the occasion. One of the teachers had me dress in traditional clothing. I was called out for posting those photos for cultural appropriation, but I wasn't appropriating; I was appreciating that culture. This goes along with what Salem is saying about all these celebrities getting away with cultural appropriation. It's so common that it's blurred the line between appreciation and appropriation.

She mentioned the difference between appreciation and appropriation towards the end-but I’d love for more videos and conversations about it, esp with Salem! Love her voice and organized videos :) I love different world cultures and in this extremely PC climate I’m afraid my appreciation will be misconstrued as appropriation. Before people even started talking about appropriation, I’d always take it upon myself to learn as much about a culture as possible to honor, listen, and show respect to people who were willing to share their culture. It just seems as the common sense way to honor cultures and people who are different than you 🤷🏻‍♀️

agreed but the problem that doesn’t really have a solution imo is that people on the outside can’t really say whether smth is appreciation or appropriation since background information is needed to know if smth is appreciation. Most times people just say things are appropriation bc that’s what they look like. Your picture story is the perfect example of that, people are not going to try and figure out you were in a class and love the culture, most will just see you in a dress and assume you’re trying to steal. most ppl are ok with understanding things superficially and i find it so annoying

I'm Polish and I can assure you there are MANy girls here who are simply addicted to tanning and it has nothing to do with trying to apropriate a different race (many of them are also racist but it doesn't make them question their skin when they fry it in tanning booths). However, I'm really puzzled as to what is appropriate in the US anymore. Why someone wearing their hair braided could be considered offensive? What it they simply like the way it looks? In Poland it's normal to braid your hair during summer holidays, girls love it, it looks super cool and once you are done with it, your hair looks super cool. And then you wash your beautiful, frizzy hair and and it's gone. And you miss it but then you move on, or do it all over again. No big deal. Why is it made into more than it really is, which is simply an individual choosing specific things that they like from others? I'm not trying to be disrespectful, just genuinly curious, you guys have a different history, but why is it ok for a Mexican girl like Salem to bleach her hair but not for a white girl to get as much tan as she likes? @@lillymurray8408 Honestly though. All she did was tan and people sweat she looked black all because she had brown skin. Just wait until they see mixed Indians.

@@ElectraFresh67 i doubt that. This picture was heavily edited, yes she had a tan... just like many other people but here it is a problem.

@@lillymurray8408 she obviously was. The fact that she doesn’t look like that anymore proves this point.
