That full disclosure argument that they have in the last act is brutally frank and stripped of any Hollywood sentimentality/fluff... personally I would strongly recommend that any couple looking at getting married **watch this movie together** BEFORE getting married... thanks for the review, brutha!

It's amazing how these films portray love over time so well. We only see three days out of 18 years and yet it feels like we know these characters so well! One common thing throughout all of the films is their communication. They never cease to communicate to one another even if it is an argument and I think that is one of the big reasons why their connection is so strong. Even though this last one is hard to watch I feel it is important to see this love try to persevere through the hardships that life throws our way. We saw these characters grow and evolve but their love had to evolve as well which is what we see in each film. So cool getting to see someone else experience these films for the first time! Loved your thoughts at the end of the video as well!

I love that they named their twins Ella and Nina, a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone (and a tribute to that moment where they hooked back up in the second film, in the last song, where she was talking about seeing Nina Simone in concert then says "Baby, you are gonna miss that plane"). SO good.

Ethan Hawke is ridiculously underrated, his performance in First Reformed is chilling

If you haven't already Boyhood. It's another Linklater film. The story takes place over 12 years and is filmed over 12 years.

I know some poeple wasnt a fan of this one, but I think it might be the most real out of all of the movies. Its so honest, so brutal, and it really capitilizes on it. After being with them for 2 movies, its really devestating to see how love can burn out. Just incredible

These reactions to the Before trilogy have been my favourites that you’ve ever done. I grew up along with these films and they had a huge influence on me and who I am today. I’m so happy that you enjoyed them as much as I did back in the day. These film truly become a part of you.

I absolutely love these films! All individually no doubt, but as a whole they are above reproach. They are a true documentation of love and all the pain and joy that comes with such a profound word as love. Future filmmakers will surely try and duplicate what Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke have done in these films but the magic of them I think will allude many who try. Sometimes art rewards you and revitalizes you and these films do that for me.

Do you remember the opening scene of the first film, the older couple on the train having an argument.... We are coming full circle now. The first two films were all about the youthful and the more mature adult forms of romantic love; the beginnings of a relationship when it is all hopeful, shiny and beautiful. This third film is harder to watch because it is about a different kind of love, the kind of love within an existing relationship that has to struggle each day to navigate the challenges and disappointments of reality, and somehow through it all keep the flame alive. Predictions here - In the next film they will literally be that older couple on the train who are right at the edge of the breaking point, and then in the final film they will be an elderly couple who have learned how to forgive and be at peace with each other in spite of all their injuries and human imperfections.

The beautiful woman in the gathering is Ariane Labed, a french actress who resides in Greece - she's director George Lanthimos' wife!

Many don't even consider or have seen this trilogy, but imo its one of the best trilogies of all time ! So glad you reacted to them. Movies were spaced out every 9 years, so here is hoping for a 4th film next year.

Another trilogy I like and somehow gives me similar vibes to this is The Spanish Apartment, 2002/Russian Dolls, 2006/Chinese Puzzle, 2013 movies. They follow this french young man in different moments of his life in the 2000's and 2010's like studying, carreer, love and parental responsabilities. You could watch them in the future. They use multiple languages but most part in in french and english. I think you'll like it.

The Before trilogy has to be my favourite film trilogy of all time. These films are magic.

Julie Delphy is wonderful. You should definitely check her out in But I'm A Cheerleader, Waking Life, or the absolutely psychotic and magnificent Killing Zoe!

I love that ending btw. They go through a lot of shit in this movie, there's much miscommunication, but at the end, they still fight for the relationship and work together. It's like he says: Love is not perfect, but it's real! And yes, I did listen to the end of the video. We may never meet, but like...if you ever happen to be in Germany, hmu :D

Julie Delphy is a truly wonderful actress. She's also in a movie called "White" which is (also) part of trilogy called "Three Colors" by Krzysztof Kieślowski. Heavily recommending it.

I love this movie but I've only been able to watch it once. You empathize so much with these amazing characters, it's heartbreaking to watch them argue.

There is also one more thing to notice that how nicely Richard Linklater shows the character development in Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Before Sunrise begins with couple arguing something in German and Character of Julie Delpy says that couple loses their willingness to love each other as their relationship grow old. Linklater throws back the same situation with them in this film.

This has to be one of my favorite trilogy. I too just watched it not to long ago and my gf then (wife now) watched it together over Skype; due to long distance. We both just love it so much. Seeing how they both grow with every movie was very reminiscent with our relationship too. I’m so happy you watched them and enjoyed them.

This movie is so awesome. It's soo realistic. I can relate so much to Celine (even tho I know she's not always in the right.) It's so easy to be "that one that got away" and soo difficult to be in a serious relationship where the real life changes all those expectations and skews those roles of a magical romance form the years past.

This was the only one I actual saw in theater. My bestie and I went, cause we loved the previous two. It’s so good, but it’s definitely a rough watch. It’s raw and real. The excellent writing is there, and the love is there; it’s just ups and downs and nothing is perfect.

Yeah that fight is like watching someone else's parents get in a major fight, heh. All in all, the Before Trilogy is one of cinema's heroic efforts - an 18-year examination of a relationship. I doubt it will be equaled ... except Linklater sort of already did it (as did Hawke!) with "Boyhood". Of course, Michael Apted did something similar with his "Up" series: "7 Up" in 1964, all the way to "63 Up" a couple years ago - a 50+ year documentary experience. Anyway, glad you enjoyed this series, one of my favorites.

I have to give a lot of kudos to you. For someone who is still in there early 20s during the filming of this, you have some very beyond your age sensibilities that I can really respect. I love this trilogy, as my last comment will indicate from the previous film that's my favorite of them. But I do think that overall this is a real depiction of what relationships can be like at the three different stages of life. Happy to see that you enjoyed it as well.

So glad you did my favorite film trilogy of all time. There's literally zero drop-off in quality from period to period. It just exists on it's own plane as a remarkable achievement, and is the reason I consider Linklater the most underrated working director out there.

Can I just say that it's been a joy re-experiencing these films through your eyes. Delphy and Hawke's performances and chemistry combined with Linklater's direction and the sublime writing make these films very special to me, to many of us and now to you. I’m so glad you watched these 3 amazing films, and I really appreciate the insight you’ve provided your viewers about your life. You always come across like such a genuine person and I’m happy to support you and this channel! I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of romance films either but I’ve realized those I dislike are the cheesy Hollywood movies (rom coms) that are over the top and don’t represent what real love is. This trilogy, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Call Me By Your Name feel REAL. They’re simple on the surface but deep and poignant in how real they are. We are just flies on a wall, watching the characters and their reality.

Fun fact: The actress playing Ariadne (of the older Greek couple) has small role in Richard Linklater's first major film, Slacker. I highly recommend you see that one if you haven't already.

I once showed this series to someone who said they were really struck by how easily the films could've been terrible, but managed to keep the balance perfectly and never falter. Since then, I can't help but imagine them as pieces of handmade Italian lace - expertly crafted artwork so delicate you're almost afraid to touch it, but so beautiful that you can't help but feel into every little loop.

Such simplicity, yet so compelling. I adore these films❤️

have you seen boyhood yet? I just really love the way Linklater plays with time, boyhood was the first movie I saw of his when it got released in cinemas and I immediately dove into his filmography and found one of my favourite filmmakers until this day

Man I just finished that middle age portion where the woman turns everything I said into an insult but real life ain't no movie...we are divorced but gosh. The hotel room scene was the last 10 years of my life and I'm so glad it's over. As much as the Before trilogy inspired me, the hotel room scene gives me PTSD lol

Newest subscriber here and my heart's practically bursting when I watched your reactions to the Before trilogy! Definitely one of the best romance films and movie sequels in general!! I own the trilogy myself on DVD (yay for physical media lol!). Seeing how you reacted to these films as well as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (another fave of mine btw), I'd like to offer up a couple of romance movies that are told “unconventionally", both of them being indie films too (I wish that more people watched indie films btw lol, people are sleeping on them). One is Blue Valentine (2010) starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The story is told open-minded with the movie showing the end of their relationship then showing how they fell in love and get together. It's amazing!! The other film is Outside In (2017) starring Edie Falco (from The Sopranos) and Jay Duplass. I don't wanna give anything away with this film, but I have a feeling you're gonna vibe with it! Awesome vid again!!

I need to watch Before Midnight again because I was disappointed in the first time but that was because I was comparing it to the first films and wanted to be drunk in the romance again. This film deserves its own space though. Reality hits hard!

I agree that these are not as well known, none of my friends or fam have watched these or been interested in them, so this is like a group of friends finally confirming their greatness! Woo hoo! I think your commentary about connecting with the second one the most is interesting! I have a theory that certain movies and shows should be seen at particular ages or points in a person's life. When I first learned of these films, the third one was about to come out and my life/age was set in between the first two, so I definitely connected with the first two, but not this one as much. Now my life is set nearer to the third, so I am feeling the need to watch them all again and see if my liking has changed!

Be sure to check out Linklater's 2001 film _Waking Life._ It featured the *second* cinematic appearance of Jesse & Celine prior to _Before Sunset._ Back in 2001, there was no ongoing series planned & it was a massive surprise to see them again in film. That we _would_ get more sequels in the decades after _Before Sunrise_ was unimaginable.

Not sure if you've seen it as I'm 7 months late, but Paterson shows the beautiful in the mundane. The convinces in life that we look for and stick out to us

If you love this series definitely check out the films by Eric Rohmer (A summer's tale, The green ray, My night at Maude's) he definitely helped pioneer the walking and talking movies and was an inspiration for Linklater!

I love how each of the movies has a perfect movie ending, but the nature of the trilogy also lets you know there is no actual movie end. What happened after that day? How were things resolved? Those characters are still out there, living some kind of life. Each movie was 9 years after the other, which would put the next sequel in 2022. It doesn’t look like that’s happening, but you have to wonder where they are. Chicago? Separated? Reunited? What are they talking about today?

since you haven't done a korean movie in a while and since you really enjoyed the chaos of the battle scenes in band of brothers might i suggest the movie "brotherhood of war" korean title taegukgi it is a fantastic movie from the perspective of the korean war and also pretty touching from the perspective of brothers also to add a note the film portrays war in a more realistic way without really having a bias or hollywood spectacle

The "old dude" really is a legend in film but as an Oscar winning cinematographer for Zorba the Greek. His name is Walter Lassally. Never acted before this.

I know it goes under appreciated like this trilogy, but I love that you did these and I just wanted to comment that

I'm not sure how well it might be for you, but I'd recommend an indie horror film called Habit (1997). It's written and directed by Larry Fessenden, and he plays the character of Sam, an alcoholic, slightly self-destructive New York bohemian, who meets a mysterious woman at a Halloween party. I can't say anything more, as I don't want to spoil it for you. You might like it because Fessenden approaches his horror movies with the dramatic approach of John Cassavetes (director of films like A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria). You can find the trailer on KZfaq (Fessenden's production company Glass Eye Pix is on KZfaq and basically are one of the best of indie horror production companies. In fact, Fessenden was involved with the video game Until Dawn as a co-writer and actor, playing the Flamethrower Guy). I definitely recommend the film.
