The Big Short was advertised as a sort of a comedy, but it's actually a horror movie. Can't believe how easily the world economy can crash and burn, and all thanks to some greedy dudes, who don't get punished, and are still doing the same things today. Now that's more scray, than Freddy Kruger, or an alien invasion. Also, there is a movie called "Margin Call", that is incredibly good, and covers these same events from the POV of a larger company, on the evening of the market crash. These two movies work well hand in hand.

Personally, I believe that the Housing Market Crisis was an event that was conspired to happen. And I'm not mad at all that a handful of people were able to catch it and profit from it. Why? Because the banks that were bailed out were the main ones to profit from this evil event in human history.

It is indeed a horror movie. It treads on comedy early until Brad Pitt's character yells at them in the casino. The stats about deaths and turning people into numbers act like a slap in the face to the characters of Jamie and Charlie and to the audience.

Nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture, but won for Best Adapted Screenplay. Watching the end of the movie made my cry, showing us that the housing market will never recover, no matter what corporations the houses are built by, or who buys them, and what happens next. My dad says the housing market is frickin ridiculous, and that the film serves as a cautionary tale for which corporation you give your money to.

15:30 yep. I’ll give you a little story. In 2006 we had a neighbor. He had his own small contracting company that was doing really well for a few years up to that point. He ended up taking out a second, and third mortgage on their house, was in the process of adding on an extension on their house (wouldve made the house 1/3 larger) and adding a gigantic pool / water slide / few hole golf course on their property. Then I remember suddenly one day, they were just gone. Moved out. I didn’t know it yet but they economy was going t¡ts up. The bank took their house and there it sat for years, unfinished, half open, giant dirt hole in the backyard. Someone ended up buying that property in 2010 and undid everything that was started. Patched up the holes in the walls as cheap and fast as possible, and filled the dirt hole, replanted a bunch of grass. The square footage actually ended up being less than the house originally started with. It continued to change hands between different renters until about 2018 when a family finally bought it and moved in. I always look at that house and what it symbolized to me. At a certain point I remember almost half the neighborhood was for sale/ for rent / brown dead grass, dark windows with no one in them. And it was like that across the whole city, the whole nation. It’s wild to think about. And it will happen again, it is inevitable, the way the system is set up it is too intertwined not to be. And unfortunately we barely learned from our mistakes.

The scene where Mark is in the restaurant talking to the human leech - I had to step away from my tv for about ten minutes to compose myself the first time I watched it because it made me so angry.. It's a little known fact that Greece, the entire country - went bankrupt as a result of the collapse of the housing market and is still in 2022 taking loans from the EU to get itself out of debt. It's been almost 15 years.
@lbierman21

I was studying in Greece in 2013 and were eating somr dinner. Some pickpocket kids stole one of my friend's cellphones and obviously got upset. The owner of the restaurant gave him enough money to buy a new phone because he doesn't want foreigner/visitors having to tell that story and have even less people come to Greece (which hurts the economy obviously). It was so sad. A sweet sweet man, but so awful that he felt the need to do that.

It takes a subject like "boring old banking" and helps us learn it throughout the movie enough for our understanding in an obviously very entertaining fashion. At the end of the movie, you feel like you have a real grasp or idea of what crashed the market and you didn't feel like you were sitting in a class learning about numbers. Two additional movies that compliment this one are Too Big to Fail and Margin Call which showcase the 2008 Financial Crisis from the perspectives of the government and an individual company. Seeing all three gives a better understanding of how the crisis transpired and the lead up to the crisis as well as the actions taking place behind the scenes from what was being reported by the news at the time.

The movie is based on the book 'The Big Short' by Michael Lewis. If you enjoyed the movie, I highly recommend giving the book a read/listen. It has the same vibe as the movie, including the dark humour and the easy-to-understand analogies. One of the best book-to-movie adaptations imo.

I love this movie, I dont know how many times I've seen it but its always so entertaining. Also I studied business management and finances so the topic is just so interesting to me, and helps understand some things even if simplified

i JUST rewatched this the other night for the 2nd or 3rd time. It's a reality check for sure, but they do such a good job at telling the tragic story in a very entertaining way. The use of breaking the 4th wall is used creatively and the cast is stacked for sure. If it wasn't a true story about the global collapse it would be even better. thanks for reaction, James!

This movie is definitely a gem. Great reaction, man! The real-life events spill over into everything when it comes to business. It doesn't matter if it's good business or bad business. Business is about making money. Just look at Holywood. Many films have a lot of interference from producers watering down a director's vision. Producers want certain criteria met and a film is drastically changed to draw in a bigger crowd. Even in film classes, it's being presented that if you want a truly unique story, go indie

I don't know why, but I rewatch this movie every year. It has an amazing rewatch value, and I'm not sure why. There are many reasons: Amazing casting, great acting, editing, humor. But I never expected to rewatch this so many times, a movie about a housing market... a housing market, that I never gave 2 shits about! Such a good movie.

Great pick by you and great picture too. I love the directors approach at making what a lot would deem boring information(certainly not movie theatre worthy exciting stuff) and turning it into, not just palatable, but great filmmaking.

One thing I also love about the movie is just the impending doom looming over everything throughout. As the film goes and the humour fades, you start to feel the true terror of what is really happening, even though you can’t see, feel, or hear it. It’s almost Lovecraftian.

A group of friends and I watched this when it was still new in theatres on a complete whim. There was nothing else at the time we were interested in seeing, we knew nothing about the movie, and we had zero interest in business at all. Until we watched the film. We were all pleasantly surprised by how gripping this turned out to be! Excited to see what you think of it 😁 EDIT: I forgot the bits where they got Margot Robbie and Selena Gomez looking hot and explaining business jargon. Like, what a tongue-in-cheek self aware thing to do.

This movie is so funny, so sad, and so good. It's also really scary, especially the one word at the end: "water". I really enjoyed this reaction.

Great reaction James! The Big Short is one of my all-time favorite movies (and I know a lot of films). For another take on the same financial mess check out Margin Call from 2011.
