I think the best thing about Nocturne season 1 is that unlike season 1 of the original it starts with 8 episodes and there's a great balance here. It's this very nice mix of tributes to the previous anime, to the games and to itself if that makes sense.

Nocturne was a strong start to a new series. Lots of great things to talk about, but I will content myself to address just one very cool detail: When Juste is wielding the whip, he has a very elegant style that almost looks like a dance with the footwork, and felt like an ice skater with that jumping single axle when he finishes off the vampire in the tavern. It really plays into the fact that he was more of a spellcasting Belmont than a whip-wielding one. If you compare his whip-wielding to, say... Trevor or Richter, they seem to have a more stable, rooted style, and they're not counterbalancing the whip with their body-weight like Juste does

Got some spoilers in my face but it was this lil guy I was already expecting since he's immortal so I'm happy to see him back. Still a few episodes left but I'm loving what they're doing so far with an original story. I'm on episode 6 when we see this other Belmont which is a great touch if you played the game boy advance games. And I already want a season 2.

The writing was messy. Too much topic to treat and if you pick one, you cant help but feel they dont take enough screentime for each one. It was really really rushed and for good reasons: Colonialism, classism, racism, power struggle at the church, philosophy of enlightment through reason versus faith, the french revolution?...really? The french revolution? No more developpement on that? I mean, sure it was just the first season but can they hold their horse a little bit to really dive in the topics they put on the table? Its one thing for them to show they care about it, it's another to really adress these subject matter. I mean i dont ask for an historical retranscription, i ask for a good treatment and profound reflection. Even metaphores needs reflections for being accurate. That's it. That's all i wanted to bring. Needless to say i love your work dude. Continue to make these i watch it with satisfaction. 😁

To be fair this season was definitely just setup for the rest of the show, it is meant to just introduce the concepts and characters. Season 1 and 2 of the original series did the same thing. I fully expect they'll flesh out the themes more as the show progresses especially with how things are setup for many of the characters.

@@lordlubu3029 i mean sure, but if they wanted to just make a good start they can put aside some and developed others latter to really concentrate on one, two...three topic at best. They really wanna chew too much in one bite. And understandably so, because the first four seasons precede them, and they have a reputation to clear, but good storytelling do have it's subtilities, and for me it was a deception.

@@chroniquephilousophique9983 To be fair if they did that then you'd be complaining that half the cast is underdeveloped. themes don't need to be explored in their entirety in the introduction, there's plenty of time and we are essentially just seeing half a picture right now. I'm fine with them just introducing the themes and then spending more time on it later rather than trying to front load and force feed everything in an unnatural way that kicks some characters to the curb. The focus was on introducing characters in season 1 and I think they did that well, I'm sufficiently invested in all of them

Now that I think about it, having Dracula as the main antagonist nearly all the time works for the games because he's more connected to Castlevania in the games than he is in the show since it's an extension of him (one of the main reasons he's able to resurrect so often) there but in the series he's less connected to it so if he was always the villain the story lines would probably get old quite fast so I think it's a good thing that they bring in new villains to keep it fresh. That and there's the fact that the show's version of Dracula decided to give up his villainy and live with Lisa.

Well beside Castlevania 1, 3 and Rondo of Blood basically the main villain are other characters even if for the most part Dracula is the final boss. Some of those main villain have been Death, Shaft, Elizabeth Barthony, Isac, and sometimes a cult, where basically their purpose is the same resurrect Dracula, which is the plot of the entire series. I belive that show could have follow the source material more by bringing these antagonist following their goals and bringing other bosses as main characters like they are doing in the show and in the past season and do really good story. Sound like you liked Nocturne, and thats perfect, for someone like me that have been following the series for decades (since the first game on nes) was disappointing. Im not asking to be 100% like the game, but closer to plot like the previous seasons. But since the ending of the first series Dracula seems to be a nice guy or trying to be among humans with his wife, so for me this isnt Castlevania anymore. More like a super vampires show.

@@-RH80- that's alright, you still have the games, hell I still have the games since I've got all three currently released collections so the original series lore is still in tact. The tv shows are are just a different interpretation of Castlevania, but if you don't think it's for you that's completely fine.

It sounds like I am going to like Nocturne a lot more than I did the first series after Season 1. I haven't seen it yet because I don't like watching unless the entire season is out. Lament of Innocence is my favorite Castlevania because of the story and the first time we got cutscenes. Also, I remember fighting the Fire Demon and it was the first time I stepped up to a challenge and I was so proud I beat it earlier than intended. Have you played Bloodstained? One of the bosses was inspired by Elizabeth Bathory.

Be glad there's is a beautiful anime like Symphony of the Night! Yes I loved that game! ❤ Of course you can talk about that Dracula this and that, but they already use Dracula in an another story? So it is nice to see something new! And Yes my only complain is the length of the storyline it was better to make a 12 episode for the first season. To many plotlines and to few backstories to really get deep in the characters.

I just finished watching it and didn't like it at all. Castlevania is about Dracula trying to 💩over the world with his minions and vampire hunter trying to stop him. Nocturne has nothing to do with that, first half is about slavery, equity and freedom, second half is about the main plot that is totally unrelated to the game while continuing talking about equity and freedom. I understand is an addaptation for a 90s 2d action platform which is difficult. Im not a purist asking to be a carbon copy, but sorry this isnt Castlevania at all. They used the name and characters for a social political plot. Some people might like it, I cant recommend it.

@@lordlubu3029 definitely the show isnt for me. All Im saying is that the plot have nothing to do with the source material. The focus of the show is freedom from both sides, slaves and vampires. Which game on the series have that as topic? The previous series wasnt a carbon copy of the third game at all, but tried to be as close as possible during the all 4 season ( even if the events of Curse of Darkness was omitted) and was pretty good. This one doesn't follow the Rondo of Blood and neither Symphony of the Night in any way, just characters names, not even personality ( Maria pissed all the time and Richter a guy with past traumas when he is supposed to be the most over confident Belmont in the family tree and Annette which is a totally new character). If you enjoyed cool, glad you did, I was looking for something way closer to the original source and this didnt deliver.

@@philiphartshorn I agree, we were promised a Castlevania sequel, but this was.. completely different. While I agree with you on why original Castlevania was good, I don't think they have done anything of these things well in nocturne. Conversations feel wooden, characters are shallow, important developments are treated badly (in richter's case especially) and action animation looked worse and less imaginative than in the previous seasons. The design of Drolta was so, so bad. She didn't look appropriate for the times Castlevania is set in and had so many problems (like hair of fire that didn't move in later parts, or these boots man). And I won't even mention Mizrak's chainmail that looked like grey latex.
@philiphartshorn
@philiphartshorn 7 ай бұрын
About Drolta, literally the first scene in season 1 of Castlevania is explaining that vampires have vast technology and knowledge hundreds of years ahead of humans, so the argument that her hair or outfit doesn’t work for the technology of the times is wrong, the world building explained it in the first scene. Also she is a demon who can shape shift her body and hair changes color in her demon form, this is shown on screen as she grows horns and flies away lol
@karlirahae5267
@karlirahae5267 7 ай бұрын
@@philiphartshorn I respect your opinion, even if we don't agree. My interpretation (maybe wrong) was that it was Dracula, who was this sage with knowledge ahead of his time, like electricity. This is why Lisa was looking for him. No other vampire possessed that kind of tech in the show. We have seen Carmilla's and Erzabeth's Bathory castles and they didn't have latex nor plastic anywhere. I mean sure, you could argue that there is time-travel in this world so it could be explained, but I think it is a stretch. I suspect nobody really cared and they chose the design, because it looked "dope". I don't like it. Carmilla's vampires were much better designed visually and had more interesting personalities in my opinion. And this is a superficial issue at best, because Nocturne committed worse sins than it's character designs.

Nocturne is a huge step backwards vs the original Castlevania series. Turning Richter into a a sniveling crybaby, putting Maria and Annette's physical fighting ability on par with Richters, blackwashing established characters to merely check modern day ESG/DEI boxes, showrunner Steve Stark attacking fans..... Nocturne is awful. Annette putting Richter down the whole show and were suppose to believe they are interested in one another? Subpar writing heavily seasoned with modern day politics and the pacing of the story is bad. I'm going to forget Nocturne and treat it as a one off fan fiction "re-imagining" of the true story / characters.

Richter is still a child. Trevor was an adult who had time to come to terms with everything, but Richter feels personally responsible for the loss of his mother, and it's still a bit raw. And no one cares that Annette is black. She wasn't a main character or important character, so changing her backstory and just using her name isn't that big of a deal. The only issue I have is the relationship between Annette and Richter right now, but nothing else has been an issue. You're just finding things to hate, it seems.
