Blade Runner's (the first one) 4K UHD release in 2017 is the reason I decided to go 4K. Bought the TV and player just for that.

Gonna have to agree with a lot of others here, Interstellar is very worthy of being on the list. Not to mention, Elysium.

Solid list. Like seeing "Passengers" on here. A movie for which the "hot take" became the overriding reaction. Yes, it's ending is too neat for the complex moral questions thrown up by its story (though not nearly as egregiously as you might have heard, folks), but it's a handsomely mounted sci-fi drama, with two engaging leads, and a reasonably original concept. One that works pretty well in general. I only saw it in theatres, but I think I'll seek out the 4K disc on this recommendation.

"Gemini Man", "Lucy", "Tenet (at least I think so)", "Godzilla vs. Kong" are some honorable mentions I can think of? Also, can you do a video with top "Fantasy" movies? Some movies I can think of are "The Wizard of Oz" and "300." I know that fantasy and sci-fi are almost the same thing but i'd like to see some kind of list regardless. A list of top animated movies like "Soul", "Toy Story 1-4", "The Lion King" and so on. Possibly separate cartoon animation and life-like animation. I like these videos. Keep em coming.

Omitting the sci-fi 4K disc of all sci-fi 4K discs, the original Blade Runner, is straight up outrageous. That and 2001 are pretty much universally regarded as the two best science fiction 4Ks on the market. You could have put both Blade Runners. It is one of the top 10 4Ks of any genre, period. It's certainly much better than Lynch's Dune, and you had that on here twice. If you look at other reviews for it, everyone says the same that it is just astonishing and one of the best 4Ks available. It is one of the best looking movies ever shot, and it is one of the best restorations ever done. It also includes every single cut of the movie. I don't know if there is any other 4K collectors that would recommend Dune over Blade Runner on 4K, that is just plain silly.

Can’t believe The Matrix didn’t make this list. That’s the eternal demo film for all formats. If these ten are that much better than The Matrix, guess I need to check them out.

Seeing it as a kid, I have a fondest for Final Countdown. When I saw the 4k treatment from Blue Underground I jumped on it. Excellent trasnfer over all, and I really enjoy that film. However, I would never put it on top of 2001.

I'm a bit surprised Pacific Rim didn't make the list. I'll definitely have to expand my collection with some of your recommendations. It's a shame we won't get a 4k disc for Aliens now that Disney owns it.

Blade Runner 2049 does look fantastic, but I would personally put the original Blade Runner 4K above it, it just looks STUNNINGLY gorgeous! That and 2001 are two of the very BEST 4K discs I have ever seen thus far IMO. And yeah, I do really love Flash Gordon as well (and not just because I'm a *massive* Queen fan lol :p)

I would recommend Star Trek The Motion Picture The Director’s Edition 4K Disc. The work and care on that version of the movie is unparalleled.

Blade runner 2049 is a great 4K Blu-ray, but for me the original one ranks first on 4K for many reasons. The quality of the 4k transfer ( this is a somewhat old movie), it looks like being shot yesterday with an outstanding level of quality in term of details and colors. Same for the Dolby Atmos soundtrack. What a sound firework at any level. And what to say about the scenario, the filming and this huge Vangelis musical score.

You didn’t mention exactly what your criteria was, but my takeaway is that you value the video quality the most, the story 2nd, and audio third. I highly recommend Space Adventure Cobra The Movie. It’s an old Japanese anime but the HDR makes the colors really pop especially in Vivid mode. The visuals are amazing

Revisiting this list. I think Ready Player One needs to be on the list and the Director’s Edition of Star Trek TMP is stunning. Obviously it wasn’t out at the time.

The wife and I call it the best SciFi chic flick of all time, but its not really a chic flick. Just a fantastic, original story with great acting, great story, and great visuals all within a pretty small stage. Blade Runner.. amazing! I can NOT get over how beautiful 2001 is. Absolutely a MUST MUST have! Dont even think about it.. get it. And dang you, I have seen you wave that "Final Count Down" disc around enough times I am going to just get it. There's something heartwarming about a studio lavishing so much care and attention on a cult B-movie like The Final Countdown. I loved it as a kid -- and still love me some cheesy cinema goodness a la Flash Gordon -- so maybe it's time for a rewatch. I like to throw in discs that have tons of color, detail, and varied brightness. Pacific Rim, Thor: Ragnarok, Aquaman, Alita, that sort of thing. And I've seen 2001 via 70mm print at a film festival on a ginormous screen in a restored vintage theater that seats 1600. That's the proper way to see it if you ever get the chance.

Gotta say that Pitch Black release was a HUGE upgrade, Arrow's Dune is on its way. The new Dune is an auto buy because I'm a Villeneuve fanboi, LOVED Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival. I HAVE A Sony 385es Native 4k projector with a SONY STR-DN1080 4K 7.2 165w/Ch DOLBY ATMOS DTS Receiver, and a Sony 800M2 4k player, and ALL Klipsch speakers, 504 c ll Center Channel, 2 Klipsch R-12SWi Powered Wireless Subwoofer, 2 KLIPSCH 8000F II towers, and Klipsch in wall surround, with kilpsch Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers. Amazing Experience, it took me 2 years to save and buy all this from ebay! Battleship 4k is a MUST to watch!

There’s a deal on at the moment at hmv ( 3 4k’s for £30 ). So I got apocalypse now,fury and the matrix,these I have seen your reviews for. My list: (I'm too torn on this to number them) Blade Runner - this movie looks like it got all the love it deserves Blade Runner 2049 (just incredible in UHD) Alien (next-level remaster) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (unreal film grain character) Tenet (smoothest grain structure ever) Ad Astra (next level OLED experience) 2001: A Space Odyssey (let's be honest this is probably number one) Dune (2021) (Can Villeneuve do no wrong?) Gattaca - extremely surprising restoration and beautiful on HDR Total Recall (the most surprising one, I assumed the quality of film stock in that era would be sub-par but the grain field of Total Recall is mesmerizing) Honorable mention: Interstellar, only because I find the changing aspect ratios not very appealing, but still, the film is gorgeous

Alien is totally more sci fi than horror IMO. I actually never considered it horror. I never thought of Jaws as horror either. It was always a monster movie to me … like Kong… or Godzilla.

I didn't really care about 4k until I got a digital projector with a 12ft screen. When the tv size is below 65, I really can't tell the difference. I watched the Alien 4k restored version and that movie never looked better. Bram Stoker's Dracula looked great also. I'm a big admirer of filmmaking craft, from the cinematography to music and looking at beautifully restored movies is a really good way to enjoy that.

Agree with your list as I already have most of them. Unfortunately, here in Canada, it is hard to source some of the titles. Even online. For example, I would love to get my hands on The Final Countdown but the best price I can get is $89 CDN.

Everything you said about Pitch Black is right. The Arrow 4K is the best version of the movie. One thing I also like is the amount of special features on that one as well

Some great choices and I own all of them as well. Flash Gordon was a standout for me as it has never looked this good. Alien also superb in 4K. But I'm surprised you left off Oblivion...it's a crisp 4K transfer and one of my standout 4K disks. But a seriously great top 10.

Final Countdown is one of My Favorite Movies - Period !! I was so excited when they did it in BluRay it was Wow. So I was expecting only a small upgrade in the 4K - Wow & Wow - a Huge Upgrade in picture and sound. I have a nice surround sound system . Pioneer Elite Kuro plasma TV , Marantz 8000 Tuner Amp with the high end Polk LSI center , Towers and rear Dipoles speakers. The other Movie that was a Huge upgrade with great Packaging is "Wild Things" . Love all your reviews .......

Arrow does have a standalone version of “Dune” in 4K. Mine just arrived yesterday and it is niiiiiiiiice!!!

Now you just made me want to go buy The Final Countdown. It’s one of my childhood movies, I saw it on the movie theater several times back in the late 70s when I was a kid but I never bought it because most copies out there were not good, so I’m really surprised there’s such a good 4K out there. Actually the only thing I don’t agree on your list is Blade Runner 2049. It was such a disappointment in 4K for me that even stopped me from buying more 4K for several months. I had bought the original blade runner in 4K at the same time and I think when it comes to 4K there’s no comparison between the original and the modern sequel. The original restored in 4K totally blew me away in the same way 2001 did. But Blade Runner 2049 in 4K was a real disappointment because I have it in 1080p Blu-ray and honestly I don’t see much difference between them. I was really disappointed by that one. Any of the Dune movies are incredible in 4K. The original Lynch film is one of the movies of my life and one of those made for giant screen movies that it’s too bad new generations never got to experience in cinema. Lynch’s Dune is not the same on a tv no matter how big your tv is. That movie is one of the reasons I became an illustrator, and I love that the new 4k restoration is so incredible too. Up there with 2001 and blade runner in my view. I’m glad Passengers has a great 4K version because now I’m going to buy it. It’s one of my favorite modern sci-fi movies and I don’t get the hate about it. For those classic sci-fi readers , that movie is like a great Robert Heinlein novel on the screen. The book Heinlein never wrote but could have written. I found it so refreshing to suddenly watch a classic sci-fi story on modern times that I couldn’t believe the hate this movie got. I have Flash Gordon on Blu-ray but I may be getting it on 4K as it’s one of those cult movies from when I was a kid and I love the 1030s crazy serial vibe. You missed EVENT HORIZON which is another incredible 4K restoration too. Check that out. And by the way, although it’s Fantasy but you should check out the 4K original German cut of THE NEVERENDING STORY. Not the international cut we know in the west. The original German cut. The one without the famous intro classic song, which has 6 more minutes and a whole different vibe. It’s only available in Germany but the new 4K restoration is awesome , particularly in the way it recovers the original sepia color mood of the film. If you only know the regular American cut we all know and think the movie to be ultra colorful and cute, you need to see the original. The intro music alone makes it feel we are going to watch a sequel to the exorcist. The whole áudio differences in the original cut are fascinating. The American cut replaced dubbing, dialogues, cut stuff out, etc. if you think you know The Neverending Story movie get the 4K German restoration of the original cut.

Great review, I'm picking us Final Countdown and 2001 right away. Now if they could complete the 2001 and put out 4K "2010 the Year we make contact", would complete that story which made me appreciate 2001 even more.

The Last Countdown was more a US Navy recruitment movie (I was serving in the Navy when it came out and was stationed at Great Lakes in training so everyone in the theater got a big kick from the chief saying he knew the code he was hearing) then a serious SciFi movie. The great cast made it watchable but I haven't seen the 4K version so it will be on my list.

great list!! i am only missing "Star Wars a New Hope" ?? The latest release is absolutely stunning and it never looked better, the colours are back more to the orginal, and it is a clean transfer. i saw it a 1000 times from 1977 im the theatre til the Disney 4K. its jaw dropping to see all these new detaills on Vaders helmet, scratches on Threepio and Leia sprouts

Transformers movies looks incredible in 4K. Especially from 3 and onward, those that are shot on real 4K digital cameras. The best is «the last knight» which is shot with stunning 8K cameras which makes the resolution look phenomenal.

Blade Runner 2049 has been my go-to disc for showing off the home theater. Looks unreal.

The biggest disappointment with 4k disc's is when they dont upgrade to atmos sound mix. It's is the MAIN reason I even upgrade or buy 4k disc's and don't stream with there so called sound mix of compressed audio. There are a lot of movies I don't even bother to upgrade because they don't have atmos mix. It's the first thing I check when a 4k is released, does it have atmos ? If not I'm not buying it. So many good movies have been put on 4k but not atmos mix, it's tragic. I'd rather watch a movie for complete immersion in sound than picture any day.

When you mentioned Flash Gordon, I knew you could be trusted. It would have been nice if you had mentioned how they were finally able to capture the wild palette, but “like Pitch Black” sort of captures that sentiment. You could probably say similar about The Matrix, as the palette was severely hampered until HDR became a reality. It was interesting to find that the movie wasn’t painted green, but that it was loaded with green sets, which were clearly visible in HDR.
