The 2010s were a time where a lot of the technology and trends we still see today started, and movies from that decade have a certain look and feel to them. Why do movies from the 2010s look different? Why do 2010s movies FEEL different? Is it just nostalgia or is there something tangible behind it?
In this video, we dive into the topic of why 2010s movies feel like 2010s movies.

The full shift from shooting films on digital sensors instead of film is hands downs the most distinct change of the 2010s. I'm shocked you didn't mention it, it completely changed how all films look.

I kinda wish movies were still made by film rather than being shot on digital sensors. I don’t know, but a lot of 90s, 80s and 2000s movie quality gives such a cosy feeling, even if it is a super serious action movie lol. I’m not the biggest fan of how movies nowadays look so crispy clean and sometimes…unsaturated? I don’t know maybe I’m just seeing things.

80s nostalgia started in the 2000s: GTA Vice City, VH1's "I Love the 80s" trilogy, Rock of Ages musical, Michael Bay's Transformers, Turtles Forever, Angry Video Game Nerd, etc... While you credit it to people turning 30, others have already theorized a 20-year rule w/ the 70s being nostalgic towards the 50s, the 80s towards the 60s, 90s towards 70s, and so on. Despite 90s nostalgia also existing in the 2010s (ex: 2017's Power Rangers, Captain Marvel, Girl Meets World, etc...), it's evident that the 80s is still being exploited in the current decade: Top Gun Maverick, Ghostbusters Afterlife, Wonder Woman 1984, etc...

Great video. I enjoy these a lot. The 2010s are a strange decade of movies for me. A lot of great ones... Blue Valentine, Uncle Boonmee, Unstoppable, A Separation, The Tree of Life, The Turin Horse, The Raid, Warrior, Moneyball, Amour, Samsara, Holy Motors, Fruitvale Station, Only Lovers Left Alive, Pacific Rim, The Grand Budapest Hotel, It Follows, Clouds of Sils Maria, Interstellar, Listen to Me Marlon, The Lobster, Mad Max, Love, Sicario, Raw, Neon Demon, Personal Shopper, Get Out, Elle, Good Time, Mandy, The Rider, Phantom Thread, Annihilation, Cold War, Upgrade, Climax, Free Solo, Shadow, Mid 90s, The Farewell, Pain & Glory, Parasite, Atlantics, Uncut Gems, Queen & Slim, The Nest (and so many more) and then it really starts to fall off in the last few years and a decade dominated by IP. It kind of felt like it could be the last decade of great movies mixed with commercial ones.

Something I vividly remember from the 2010s is shaky cam and lightning-fast cutting in action movies, e.g. Taken 3 and Alex Cross, shaping up to become the norm, just for John Wick to come along and kill that trend instantly.

This was a great analysis, though I wouldn't mind this video being "revisited" in another 2-3 years. I'm with those who say that it's too soon to tell what gives the 2010s its own unique signature as a decade, at least in full. But these were all decent points to touch on. Perhaps there's more that can be explored and fleshed out if this video does get redone later.

Some other things to add: 1. Different Filming/Cinematography techniques - A lot of films have a variety of shooting style. With both independent and successful films employing techniques such as entire film being in 'single take', or a harrowing/claustrophobic filming style like in Son of Saul or James White 2. More experimentation - Debatable, but in 2000s, I think there was a certain 'niché' types of films that were considered acclaimed by critics but in reality were pretty much Oscar bait. Whereas in 2010s, I think the industry started being more experimental, and open minded. So, like Wes Anderson, Jonathan Glazer, Alejandro G. Inarittu found more success, and A24 sort of helped to get unconventional cinema n the mainstream.

I’ve only ever had 2 memorable 3D experiences. I had Sharkboy and Lavagirl on dvd as a kid and it had 3D prompts in the movie that made it fun to watch as a kid. Recently, I saw Avatar the Way of Water in 3D and I believe that’s the definitive way to experience it. Most of the time though, I think it’s just a waste of money.

I am very burnt out on comedy being inserted everywhere, specifically the Whedon style shit. Totally done and can’t stand it. It was fine when it was limited to mcu, but as is with all things, it’s become ubiquitous because people liked it. Also cinematic universes, i basically only wanted those things in the mcu, but now since it’s everywhere I don’t even want it there so much, but it’s kinda necessary for that brand at this point. I definitely don’t need it anywhere else though. Another exhaustion is the overuse and over reliance on CG and green screens! For fucks sake, they need to use more practical effects! That Industry is so burdened and overworked that the cg looks worse than it should, given our tech advancements.

Another person pointed it out in the comments here but I feel like the late 2010s was the start of the end of the romance movie genre. Now you rarely ever see a romantic movie getting a wide theatrical release. Back in the 2010s which really isn't that long ago Nicholas Sparks had a new movie pretty much every year, the fault in our stars was a huge success among many other movies. it's in my opinion that romance films are dying really fast I mean romantic comedies do have a place on streaming apps now, but romantic dramas are really fading away. 😞

I know it's not a new concept of books becoming movies but a lot of YA books (mostly trilogies) got adapted into movies in 2010's. I think it's due to the success of Twilight (2008 - and yes I know it's late 2000's but the 2010's really banked on the hype surrounding it [both positive then turn negative]), and the Hunger Games (2012). Most of these adaptations would also have love triangles you couldn't escape from these films. They started out as these major blockbusters you would see in theatres then dwindle down to something you would just find on streaming services (Netflix did a good chunk of these and still are).
