Tonight on The D-Files, Chris Gore and Alan Ng, through inside sources at Disney, uncover the details of the what was behind the LGBT, "girl boss," anti-male agenda that Disney has forced into its films over the past few years, particularly the period between "Raya and Last Dragon" and "Strange World," then leading up to "Wish." Alan Ng also covers Jennifer Lee's takeover at Disney Animation, her push to lecture kids instead of entertain them, Disney's constant all-time lows at the box office, their unwillingness to change and the lack of leadership from Bob Iger.

I felt the same last year at Hollywood Studios watching Fantasmic. All I felt was disdain towards what Disney has become and couldn't enjoy one single moment of that show. That was when I totally realized that I was absolutely empathetic about Disney. I simply just don't care about them anymore. And that is what is sad.

The biggest problem with Raya, well it has a couple, one is how it botched it’s message. The whole movie is just Raya being gaslit to trust the villain who never does anything to show that she’s earned it. The second is it feels more like a tv series than a movie. Like it would’ve probably been more well received as a series on Disney+

I was on a business trip in Japan for about two months during the time Strange World was released. I don’t recall seeing a single promo for it anywhere, except a very small image at the company-owned Disney Store in Ikspiari (Downtown Disney for the Tokyo Disney Resort). It wasn’t promoted within the TDR parks/stores at all, which makes sense because of the licensing deal. The movie made zero impact in that country; I can only imagine how Disney films will continue underperforming in foreign markets.

Chris is a little late seeing the messaging to kids, this stuff started in the 90's with stuff like Captain Planet. What's happened now is that it's become omnipresent in the culture and entertainment. Parents really can't let kids watch shows they haven't screened without taking a risk and even then the schools are worse about this messaging. I recall being taught communism in school by my teachers, which would have been terrible to my parents but it's not like I knew what it was until decades afterwards. It's good to be an optimist but be on guard with your kids.

Really enjoying this expose of Disney Alan! Children don't even have a childhood these days, which is sad; a certain group of adults have taken that away, making them adults as soon as possible, this taking them away from their parental care. On a lighter side, my local discount store has dumped a load of Encanto dolls on their shelves, so I guess it is the final stop of hope before the the great big hole in the ground! Keep up the good work guys!

I would not blame covid for Raya’s failure. I tried watching it on d+. It took me three nights of starting and stopping to finish it and I only did that because I felt obligated since I was paying for d+. It’s a fetchquest video game and the stakes at getting the shards or whatever were so low, un dramatic and easy, it was just boring. Plus it has Awkwafina in it. Why they keep trying to push her as a voice actress is beyond me.

Going by BoxOffice Mojo's numbers: Raya/Encanto/Strange World & WiSH grossed $712 million worldwide combined. Going back 20 years, to the post renaissance era: The Emperor's New Groove/Atlantis: The lost Empire/Treasure Planet & Brother Bear grossed $714 million worldwide combined! "I left out Lilo & Stitch cause I'm making a point here", & that's not adding 20 years of BoxOffice inflation! Disney Animation is in a worse situation now in the 2020s, then they were in the early 2000s Good luck with those Sequels Disney Animation😂

And with an approximate inflation adjustment, The Emporer's New Groove + Atlantis + Treasure Planet + Brother Bear grossed $1.3 billion. If a person's business loses value over time like that, it is like a cancer that grows slowly and quietly.

14:37 Chris, you talk about messages about not having kids. I think a subliminal way to encourage that is characters who actually do fall in love and have children. You can certainly have gay characters adopt, but the most powerful way to show that is characters who have biological children. The Incredibles is a powerful movie because it’s about a family. Many of the greatest Disney romances lead to the expectation that the characters may one day have children together. But modern Disney removed a potential romantic plot between a boy and a girl in Wish, and who knows if that’s going to be a recurring thing now to not have.

It depends on who is in charge within each division of the company. Pixar crafted a decent but an effective love story. “Elemental” brings back an important story beat that is missing in most modern Disney films and that is “true love”. Ember and Wade, the two leads of the movie meet unexpectedly and their relationship develops organically over time. I wouldn’t say too much, but it’s a classic romantic comedy story that’s sadly fallen to the wayside in favor of these trends of gender empowerment. Elemental’s director Peter Sohn based the movie on his own life experiences especially growing up with the cultural clashes. Movies need to be made with the director/writer in mind, not with a by-committee approach.

Imagine thinking you can double-down endlessly on pumping movies/tvshows/videogames with a borderline far-left agenda.... and that it will lead, somehow, to people not only shedding all their inherent biases and preferences, but also to them glorifying the megacorporations that put them on the virtuous path. Absolute insanity. I hope that sweet ESG money is worth it.... because the resulting content isn't.
@leviswranglers2813
@leviswranglers2813 3 ай бұрын
My personal belief is that the goal is much, much longer-term. The goal is to build nostalgia for this DEI/ESG stuff within a portion of the younger demographic. That way, they do the work for them while they attempt to indoctrinate the generation after them in a larger capacity. Then after that will continually push towards the more liberal agenda.
@ottoweininger8156
@ottoweininger8156 3 ай бұрын
I don't understand this ESG narrative. If they're getting ESG money it's in the form of loans - which they have to repay with interest. ESG lenders still require them to make money.
@leviswranglers2813
@leviswranglers2813 3 ай бұрын
@ottoweininger8156 correct, but a 600 million dollar load at 8% is way more expensive than a 600 million dollar loan at 4%. These larger corporations are completely run by loans because they try to keep their money in investments that earn a higher rate of return than the interest rate of their loans. Basically they are trying to make profits at both ends and that means doing everything possible to get the absolute lowest interest rate. How much money something actually earns matters, but not nearly as much as paying for the loan it took to make it.

@leviswranglers2813 They miscalculated that parents aren't letting their kids watch this stuff, and kids are bored by it anyways. I've never seen a kid with a Steven Universe shirt. Can't have nostalgia for something you've never experienced.
@leviswranglers2813
@leviswranglers2813 3 ай бұрын
@hope-cat4894 My early 20s year old kids have multiple friends who own Steven Universe stuff, that show was fairly popular with that demographic. So, the plan doesn't require everyone to get on board, just a portion because it will be built upon. They don't have to get every single person on board the liberal train, they just have to slowly shift the Overton Window in that direction and at some point in the future the Window will basically tumble out of control in the left direction. Same kind of thing can happen on the conservative side of the Window.Also, just my thoughts on the subject, I could be completely mistaken.

In a CHILDRENS movie you don't need to demonstrate whether a character is gay or straight. And the audience shouldn't necessarily be able to tell one way or the other unless a romantic connection is central to the plot, as in a prince falling in love with a princess. If no such plot point is needed to tell the story leave it out, along with any references to sexuality.

One of the reasons we don't have as many leaders anymore is because of a tenet of the Woke principles rooted ultimately in (ironically) anti-authoritarian impulses on the Left that I think sprang out of anarchism. In the Woke ideology, power is bad and is associated with hierarchy. Everyone is supposed to be equal, so if someone rises above in certain ways like merit or leadership, they have been assigned power, and have now gone against the principles of their own ideology. That's why you don't see the Woke movement coalescing under leadership figures like what we saw in the Civil Rights Era. Leaders lead, so they have power, so they create hierarchy, so they are not allowed.

But putting up with Awkwafina's voice for almost 2 hours ends up seeming like a type of torture. 😩 I think Iger is an acquisitions guy. That's the only thing he really knows how to do. Other than that he has no clue what to do when it comes to Disney. He's just not someone who inspires loyalty, creativity, and confidence as a leader. How can he be when he's selling off his majority of stake in the company?

Came here after somebody from the r/Mauler (better known as the host of EFAP) subreddit posted a link to these videos. It's astounding how much influence the "progressive" activists from Tumblr actually have at Disney to the point that rather than course correct after a film i.e Strange World flops, they'd rather hold a therapy session over Zoom to I guess discuss their precious fee-fees and blame everybody but themselves. Even at Disney's worst prior to the Tumblr-ification of the company in the mid-late 2010s, they didn't hold group therapy sessions to assauge their co-workers hurt feelings if a film was a box office dud, no, they took responsibility and did whatever it took to improve their craft even if it meant letting certain people go in the process.

Just like employees are no longer being hired based on merit and/or talent, so too are entertainment products being judged by completely different - and useless and superficial! - criteria. Why do you think there are so many appeals to awards or critics scores when the media talks about a film these days? The simple answer is because those systems have been successfully captured. A movie can no longer be objectively good or bad as entertainment, it instead has to be "appreciated" for its imagined social impact, which amounts to the laziest of creations being generated by the industry. Thankfully, the solution is straightforward, though it requires vigilance. Simply don't allow the idea that everything is "personal taste" and "subjective" to be the only narrative out there. When you see bad writing, call it out. When you are bored by uninteresting characters, say why superficial traits aren't enough to care about someone. When a protagonist acts with questionable ethics, be ready to name them as a villain. In many ways, the battleground is the rules themselves, or even the fundamental existence of shared language, so the best way to oppose this nonsense is to not remain silent. Keep talking and sharing universal concepts and objective observations, and watch the ideologues get angry and frustrated because their attempts to change the rules of the game aren't working. New ideas are always welcome. Those are healthy and help an industry/community/etc grow. But new rules to judge the basic worth of those ideas? No. That is not allowed in any way, shape, or form.

So here's a problem and why gay characters outside of specific gay promoting stories don't work. Unless they tell you, how do you know anyone is gay? Because the default assumption is that everyone is straight. And on average they are, to the tune of 98%. But here in lies the problem. If you don't let the audience know straight up, they'll feel betrayed (not violently so, don't go to extremes). But the moment the story does, that's all that the character is and will be. 'That gay guy'.

Keep us divided, keep us arguing, rake in the profits, extract wealth and resources until the wells and mines run out, and let the future take care of itself. You'd think they would want to know if employees are from (or support) backgrounds where something like Sharia Law or centuries old cultural traditions forbid things like tolerance or acceptance of liberal beliefs. When agenda comes before entertainment, both diminish. Christian movies have been notoriously bad in quality for a long time because they're obsessed with preaching that they let it bog down the fun and quality. As a result they don't actually get their message out to. anyone other than the people who already know the message front to back. If you actually want to convert someone, you have to put entertainment and quality as your priority. You can't convert an audience that doesn't exist or doesn't show up. Idealogues and puritans makes for shit entertainment. I think it's interesting that the tables are somewhat turning. There's actually some faith based movies that actually have good writing, acting, etc. Sound of Freedom was just a solid movie. Meanwhile, we got all this woke stuff that make Kirk Cameron movie look like Citizen Kane.

Why would you subject yourself to censorship of Saudi Arabia? Dude, I agree somewhat with your points, but that's completely nuts and kind of shows that you guys are going way overboard with this. I saw Strange World, but to say that the movie revolve around the gay character is a complete lie. It's an afterthought. The movie is about climate change and the message is interesting. The animation is crap

The activists get upset when women have a relationship with a man randomly with no purpose then turn around and do that exact thing with gay characters.

Understandable their films haven't been great, but a bunch of old guys just dont give lots of legitimacy to your complaints to younger people yhat actually want more diversity. It just rings hollow.

Great comment Chris. The world is going to be fine, whether we are here or not. The Earth is 4 billion years old. It has survived climate change for billions of years, survived meteor impacts, earth quakes, giant floods, super volacnoes and the yunger dryas comet impact. Do not worry about the world, worry about yourself. Your life is short compared to the earth.

While I agree with the decline of Disney movies you guys pretend like Disney stock hasn't been sitting comfortably at roughly a 5 year all time high...Yes it is down from its peak in 2021 but it sits in a historic positive trend.
