Instead of using their powers to help Africans with dictators, wars, preventing famines and foreign interference, they decide to help Jason with his lack of companionship...👌right 👌

I think that is kinda the point, but it doesn't make a good story. Like if there was an evil white guy behind the reason they were only using their powers to help white people.

That was Dante’s point. Their power comes from white people’s happiness. So they’re sort of slaves or racial beta cucks. Totally ironic for a movie which seems to place itself as a movie for black people to relate to.

As a black lesbian I'm so insulted. I live in PDX, a big town of mostly white people, and I don't think about what white people think. It's honestly incredibly racist. Black people can't win because white people? How does that explain any black person anywhere being successful, ever, especially during Jim Crowe Era? As a filmmaker, I'm also upset that any studio would flush their money down the toilet for this crap when they could have given it to me and my crew, and we could have truly made something dope. Tragic.

I too wonder who this movie was made for. Verbal Riot said the movie made him feel like he was listening to black twitter, but I feel like most of black twitter would be out on this movie for the simple fact that it’s about a black guy wanting to date a white woman. It seems like this movie would appeal best to upper-class coastal liberals and ultra woke college students.

These guys basically cracked the code with this garbage. The studios function with the assumption that the rest of the world outside their little bubble agree with them on every social, cultural, and political idea. Meanwhile, maybe 10% of the potential audience are even interested in giving it a chance. And within the 10% that actually pay to see it, none of them would recommend it to anyone. That’s a synopsis of the past ten years.

That raises the question though, of why wouldn't they believe it? The mass media, academia, corporate and non-profit boards, and one of the two major political parties almost all believe the same things and promote the same ideological positions. I don't blame them for thinking that they can release this kind of stuff and it's going to be a money-spinner, because they're part of the nation's socio-economic elite. And the one political party that doesn't support this stuff has been so effectively marginalized as a cultural force, thanks in no small part to that mass-coordinated elite opposition, that they have no reason to think that everyone else wouldn't be on board. These people have a political ideology that they are always the underdog, and they aren't intellectually equipped to handle a social construct where the underclass is resisting them and their propaganda.

Since all white people are bad according to the actors/director/producers, I wonder when they'll begin the media attack on white people for not supporting that kind of racist content and behavior. I personally cannot identify with or support people who hate me and those like me based on my skin color. The death throes of the industry is indeed interesting to watch. As far as the view that some racial jokes are ok against white people because the jokes are actually funny, turn it around. If it's funny for all races to be the butt of a funny joke then fine. But if not, then you cannot encourage that behavior towards one race of people while calling it racist when it's towards other. It floors me to be even commenting this. I grew up loving all sorts of comics, including Pryor and Murphy. I used to sneak their tapes because I was too young for that kind of humor when I discovered them. But if those days are gone, then they need to be over for all.

It's as if the Black filmmakers are basically saying Whitey created the first world and we love living in it as opposed to the continent of Africa (where slavery is still going on) or the island of Haiti where 99% of Blacks live. No "Wakanda" over there. And yet they love living in Whitey's world. If I were Black and was so tormented by Whitey, I'd get the hell out of such a "racist" country but I think a great many Blacks feel the way Muhammad Ali felt (although I don't know if many would ever openly admit it, especially to Whitey) when asked by a reporter after coming back from Zaire after "The Rumble in the Jungle" in 1974, the reporter asked Ali, "Champ, what did you think of Africa?" and Ali said "Thank God my Granddaddy got on that boat".

An incisive satire could have been made with the same name, only the satirical targets would have been the white liberals whose pandering, paternalistic attitudes are instantiated in the magical negro trope, rather than white people as a whole. This movie actually inverts the trope, by pandering to the panderers.

So bummed I missed this stream. To Dante's point: all forgiven if funny. True. But not because "funny" has some magical properties (no pun intended.) But because there's some "truth" in the funny. There's some truth, coupled with irony, or juxtaposed with a counterpoint, that people relate to. And the "forgiving" comes from an understanding that a good point was made.
@DeflatingAtheism
@DeflatingAtheism 4 ай бұрын
Yep. What's more, the premise of a movie doesn't need to be airtight, we can deal with things like plot holes and inconsistencies when we're going for an entertaining movie experience. But when a satire is based in a flawed premise at the story level, it has to be in service of an even greater and more profound human truth. You will find no human truth- in fact, no humanity at all- in the precepts of Critical Race Theory, and the movie is asking us to disbelieve our lying eyes if we're expected to believe it's normal for black men to skulk around with defeated body language.

First of all, he’s not “great”. That word is so overused and misused, it’s become meaningless. I’d say he’s overrated. He’s also a racist. He’s a no go for me. I don’t support people who hate me. They can F off.

Yep, it was my biggesf problem with Get Out. All you need to do is switch races to know if a film is racist, and that was pretty freaking racist!

Agreed, with everything you said after the word “director”. Great director? He’s done one decent film. Us was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Nope was watchable at best. That’s it. 3 movies. A 6, a 4, and a 1. I wouldn’t call the director with those numbers “great”. Mediocre comes to mind. Overrated seems obvious. Or just sh*t. Btw, I loved Key & Peele. I respect the man’s work before movies. I wish he’d just stop with directing for a bit and do another season.

All my life I've been told Americans should emulate our more enlightened, liberal Western European betters. Now, with the Social Justice bilge being puked out of the Ivy Leagues and Hollywood, we've out-liberaled the liberals so drastically we've horseshoed back into racial identitarianism, and even the Europeans don't want this shit!

Every black dude I know loved Kung fu movies. So, this representation thing is such bullshit. I'm white and I love them too. You don't have to be Chinese to relate to a Jackie Chan character.
@DeflatingAtheism

Exactly, Hong Kong Kung Fu films and Italian-American gangster films have always been popular with black audiences, and they wouldn't be made more popular through "representation". If you tried to gear these things for a "modern audience", you'd only succeed in losing the existing audience they already have. People don't need tokens inserted so we can see ourselves on screen, we relate to the characters though shared humanity.

How is it white people's fault that the main character isn't cool or suave when being cool used to be seen as a black people thing? Steve Urkel was the outlier, not the norm. That's such an odd idea for the movie to promote.

I'm glad my suspicion was confirmed by Dante, now I don't know how widespread amongst that community it is, but I imagine at least 40% feel the same way as Dante. I suspected that even that community was tired of this weird victimhood power fantasy nonsense. I bring this up a lot since I noticed this as a WHITE child, who did grow up in a conservative household (still am sort of) outside of Chicago in a Upper MidClass area, that they're SUPER RACIST. Then after dad died 6 years ago, I moved to Mississippi (since red state and I wanted to own guns), and wow, it's amazing how not racist it is down here. A lot of mixing, people have mixed friendships and unlike up north it's not for the token aspect of it, or like a collectathon for virtue signalling reasons. They're not pets like they are in the Metropolitan parts of the US. So this stuff annoys them.

Savvy & welcome addition with Dante James, who makes the overall best points here, not that Chris Gore & AlaNg are in any way overmatched; more like Dante brings the most appropriate diversity of personal life experiences in order to offer the deepest insights (The "Gen Z movie, not black audience movie" was a bullseye). FWIW, I'm in the process of significantly culling my viewership of multiple alt/indie-entertainment media pundits, in wake of the apparently unspeakable yet nevertheless obvious selective critical analyses that are blatantly placing personal and/or business relationships over the responsibility to their audience. But intelligent & insightful commentary like this, along with astute guest reviewer choices when the subject matter calls for it, will ensure FILM THREAT remains an enlightening & entertaining staple. P.S.: I also liked THE POSTMAN back in the day; kinda corny but in a reassuring and entertaining way. I've not seen it again in the nearly 30 years since; perhaps we'll give it a go before HORIZON hits.

I was watching Dave Cullen's review of Field of Dreams, and couldn't help but think... man, what a difference 30 years makes! A Hollywood movie asking us to rise to the best version of ourselves!?! If it seemed cornball at the time, it's only because we took it so much for granted. I really think you'll see Gen Zers who weren't even alive at the time these were released gravitating back to movies like these, simply because they're so much more hopeful and human than the crap they were raised on.

What version of THE POSTMAN did Chris see? 🤨 That dude puts on a dead postman's uniform, and people treat him great because they think he is a postman. He sleeps with the dude's wife so they can have a baby, and that dude dies and he hooks up with his wife. The Hero of that movie is Tom Petty. Lol
