I've known how things were going since 2012. I was a young adult book blogger, and an indie author. YA was one of the first entertainment sectors hit. And I was told, to my face, that the best thing I could do as a 'white writer' was to stop righting because I was taking space from people more deserving of the right to speak. One of the reasons we love comedy is that it allows us to laugh at our own shortcomings. The great comedic characters tend to be woefully inept and never learn from their mistakes. By watching them blunder through life we identify with their mistakes and learn the lessons they are oblivious to. I dislike the fact that DEI has infected the entertainment industry, but at the same time I'm glad that DEI's efforts are seen by the whole world via movies and TV series rather than something that is only discussed in much smaller politics-minded groups of people. In the pre-DEI WORLD, an aspiring writer trying to get work in Hollywood, they'll have to prove they can write by providing examples, citing experience, education, etc. So why is it some lunatic whose only work experience is HR at Caterpillar can be hired to dictate to professional writers what they can and cannot write? Rules set up for creatives by non-creatives who cannot possibly understand the creative process. A recipe for success if I ever heard one.

A lot of these standards seem like they're targeted towards behavior from 30+ years ago. It's also ironic that they mention to be sure to create well-rounded characters when these kinds of guardrails typically result in flat, one-dimensional protagonists and antagonists.

Precisely. Many stereotypes exist because there is a certain amount of truth--even just a kernal--to them. And many of the stereotypes they're whining about are harmless. One of the best ways to utilize this is actually to give a character one 'expected' trait, and then some other unexpected one that either bends the meaning of the first, complicates it, balances a negative with a positive, etc. By banning them, these clowns will actually reinforce them.

They also seem to be ignoring the cultural relevance of a lot of their targets - depicting religious extremism, especially in regards to Islam, was mostly prevalent in the first 5 to 10 years following the 9-11 attacks, and then they largely dropped off once the cultural shock and fear began to fade. Having that kind of social response is understandable, especially during the healing process. I remember the story of Chadwick Boseman objecting to the character they gave him on All My Children, and he was right to object to the character that was written. That was in 2003, and I have no doubt there might still be some old guard around who are stuck in the past with outdated ideas. That being said, the usual now seems to be just as bad in regards to most male characters, especially if they're supposed to be from the American South and Southwest. It almost seems like the writers of these characters (like most of the male characters from She-Hulk, etc) are getting revenge for the tropes and stereotypes that upset them before. It feels more petty and vindictive than anything, and that's only reinforced by their usual reactions to criticism.

I'm not agreeing with them. But your maths doesn't really check out. Those two 50% groups can overlap. Like how if you had a room of 10 people with 5 women and 5 soldiers, some (or even all 5) of those people might be female soldiers.

Or like 10% white women, 40% ethnic minority women, 10% ethnic minority men, and 40% white men. Don't get me wrong. I still think these quotas are stupid. But they're not _quite that_ stupid.

I am canceling Prime before the renewal kicks in next month. My decision was made once they want to dun their customers to pay extra in order to not have advertisements, when no ads were a major selling point until it wasn't. This is probably in large part to pay for their losses over their inordinately expensive Rings of Disaster vanity project. But hey, at least Bezos can afford the indulgence of flying out into space. I'm done. Have a nice trip, Bezos. Buh-by!

I've been working at HR departments at tech startups for the past 13 years, and I've worked under 8 different HR managers (I personally work with Talent Acquisition and not HR). To understand this you need to understand how HR Managers work. They are power hungry women (I've never worked under a male HR manager) that have zero interest in the company or its employees wellbeing. Everything they do is for themselves and their own career. DEI is still a hot topic in some circles, and this is her way of making sure her personal brand is still relevant.

I love the movie Crazy Rich Asians. I watched them in the red carpet in front of a movie theater in Hollywood. My son took lots of pictures with the cast. They were all so friendly, I was surprised. I’m currently living in Oklahoma and it was my first time in Los Angeles. Had a great time

This is hilarious. Using a white guy would be seen as not diverse. Using a black guy is "perpetuating a racial stereotype." Using a Latino would fall into the same issues as a black guy but with xenophobic undertones. So all that was left was an Asian. Good job. Keep the spotlight on this. This kind of forced conformity is really bad along multiple dimensions . For one, since the ancient Greek playwrights, there have always been "villains" in stories. They teach us basic morality. How can we even have a villain or a foil if we can't tolerate deviations from the accepted good? You'd need a story where the rogue has a development arc and learns how to be good. That means the rogue needs to start out breaking all of the rules Amazon has set. Anyhow...
