I hear you, Jacob, but they had to change a bit to remain viable. They still make really nice products and have expanded their range considerably, but admittedly some of their releases have crazy price points, and the purists can’t help but miss the old school Filson. I still love them, though. Thanks for sharing your insights.

I have had a pair of filson boots for over a decade now.... And before i owned them they belonged to my uncle.. Who had them for god knows how long. And they still look new. Zero issues. So yes while Filson may cost an arm and a leg. You only pay that once. So in reality for well used and always used gear.... It is ACTUALLY extremely cheap

I have had several Filson products over the years, including the waxed cotton rain jacket, double Mackinaw Cruiser, and wool vest. I will say they are all excellent quality products; however, I live in the NW, and I cannot complain about their wool products at all. The cotton waxed jackets, although excellent quality, do not repel the rain after a while. They have to be replenished (re-waxed) and only work really well in the cold and wet with their wool liners. With that combination of wool and waxed cotton, they are great. The double Mackinaw Cruiser is un-believeable both in warmth and durability. Expensive, but made to last a lifetime.

That's an excellent question. While I haven't noticed any staining, out of the box the finish is a bit greasy, and will leave a residue on your hands. This tends to dissipate rapidly with use, but you'll notice the finish will attract some dirt.

Filson is a Seattle based company and for over 100 years. They have a zip in wool vest for many of their waxed cotton duke jackets. Also I have a Mackinaw Cruiser wool jacket and it's fantastic. Their items that are US made which is most of their items are well worth the investment. I have seen the move away from natural fibers to fleese and other oil based items, but they do not stack up at all to good old fashioned wool and waxed cotton in the long haul.

Forget the naysayers that want to focus on the original owners and quality. People retire and, oh yeah-actually die.Long history companies go through changes. Duh! Trying new ideas is called growth. Sometimes you get a hit, sometimes not. Move on-try again. Keep trying I find the quality outstanding!

I have a few Filson items and they're the best pieces of clothing that I own (along with WWII and 1961 US Navy peacoats made of kersey wool). Never paid full price for any of them, which makes them even more worth the cost for entry. I do see some negativity about Filson having been bought out by an investment company, probably more than once, but since I don't have their older stuff to compare, I can't say whether some of these people are being paranoid or not. All I know is that the stuff I have from them is quality and better than the gear I was issued in the military (I would trust my Filson stuff over my military stuff).
@sbreslin41

Cemmos I agree. They occasionally implement some wonky marketing ideas, like this new premium workwear line, but they do make a genuine effort to stick to their ‘knitting’. The old standbys like the mackinaw wool pieces are still made very well, and they’ve added some great new stuff as well.

The Tin Cruiser now made is not the same material as the older ones, the imported materials are lower quality. I have an old one that alive been wearing for around 20 years, and it is very different from the new Tin Cloth they are using. They have jacked the price to $350 too. The Wool Packer has been replaced with a cotton lined version.. a downgrade with regards to workwear. Filson still makes some great products, but they just aren’t the American company, synonymous with quality, they once were.

@pagodad2036
@pagodad2036 3 жыл бұрын
faultroy I will add that you can indeed get a carharrt jacket made in the USA but most of them are now manufactured in Mexico. Huckberry has a brand called flint and tinder that makes a waxed sailcloth trucker jac. Sort of a filson copy but lighter weight that is also made in USA. Definitely hard to find something that’s not sold out to another country these days.

A Timber Cruiser is an occupation that requires the carrying of timber land maps or plats. That's what the back pocket is to be used to store. Loggers don't use Filson woolens because the get ate up too quick.

It's far more than I expected. I have never been a vest guy, other than a synthetic fleece I use as a layer during colder kayaking months. I always like it for movement but never thought of it as warm enough for just cold weather wear. Plus, it is not that attractive with jeans and casual wear. Looking at it that vests that way in general was wrong. I have used this Filson vest with a flannel layer long sleeve shirt-with and without a t-shirt under layer-I can't wait to not to put on a full coat. Again, I love the freedom of movement. What I was surprised by, was the warmth. I bought the Tin cloth 17 oz. insulated vest(dark tan), and have been more than happy with the results. Zip it up when colder, lower when not. It definetely is better as least zipped a bit. Love the patina that is slowly taking place. Character rookies, character! I have used it snow-blowing and love the waterproofing wax as well. I think I paid $195? Temperatures in the low 30's have been no problem at all. Haven't gone lower temps than that. With activity, I'm sure would be great with right layers underneath. 5 stars all the way!

Just curious, maybe a dumb question. But will the oil /wax finish rub off onto furniture or vehicle seats? Or have you noticed it doing any damage to other clothes hung next to the tin cloth jacket?

The other major waxed jacket company is barbour, from England. Their jackets are slightly lighter weight than Filson’s tin cloth, but they seem to do a pretty good job of repelling water. I also live in Washington state, and also own a tin jacket. I’d say it’s pretty water repellent, although you need to keep it waxed, and it’ll never be as waterproof as some modern materials. This really is 19th century technology. What you do get with Filson is a jacket that’s very durable, pretty water repellent, pretty abrasion resistant, more breathable than most rain jackets, made in America, and really cool looking.
