Today we take a look at the 2 most common wool tuxedos. Hailing from the east the granddaddy of them all the Pensilvania Tuxedo from Woolrich. And from the West coast strait outta the gold rush! The Alaskan Tuxedo from Filson Who will win!?!?

I have the Pa. tuxedo I bought off of ebay I believe 1945 era. I use for snow blowing. I love the Woolrich. As a kid in the PA. woods in the late 70's early 80's my dad bought me a set for buck hunting. Never got cold in the woods even after 8-10 hours of tree stand or stand hunting. Just awesome stuff.

Already owned a Filson, a now rare 80s design with rounded hand pockets. Love it. Recently snagged an old Woolrich in red shadow-plaid on the bay for $35. Love it so much as well.

Very informative vid Cameron-thanks! Off your observations; I recently snagged a mid 50's PA tux with matching pants, jacket, and trapper's hat. Ebay finds can go either way on you, but this time was all aces- in the pockets were the matching mittons, a new hankerchief, and the 1963 Michigan hunting guidelines. Incidentally, Dogfish Head made an ale called Pennsylvania Tuxedo. As a lifelong native to the PA hill country, I heartily endorse it.

Problem is that Woolrich isn't a viable brand in the discussion anymore. They simply gave up and decided to become a fashion brand. They literally double and tripled the price of the exact same articles of clothes within the span of 1-2 years and eliminated much of that line. If you're able to find the legacy stuff, snag it up. Filson, being overpriced as it is, still makes some very good articles of clothing. Woolrich doesn't even do that anymore.

Exactly, Woolrich is now mega-Hipster. Filson is hipster, but Woolrich took it about 10 notches higher. I dont even think Woolrich's target audience is the US now, I think it's international. Whoever bought Woolrich, they bought if for the name only, they destroyed that brand IMO. I got some great stuff from Woolrich over the years. at great prices, but no more it seems.

The rich family sold out to some European company lavori. They shut down the mill in woolrich, pa near me. It's not even the same company anymore. Just some European city slickers milking the woolrich name trying to pass it off as something it's not.

What has happened to Woolrich is a shame. I grew up only a handful of miles from their mills, and have visited their store in Woolrich, PA regularly when I go home. I have bought two of their Artillery Blankets, an unfinished couch throw of the civil war blanket material, and I have my grandfather's Pennsylvania Tuxedo. Truly phenomenal quality stuff, but what they have now is just sad. For many years now the civil war blankets have been the only thing worth anything. Now they're not even making those.

Thanks for sharing your video. On the basis of this review I went out and bought a woolrich jacket (not easy in the UK so it came all the way from Bulgaria!). It is everything you described. Keep the clothing reviews coming please.

Hi Cameron! Great vid! I recently got this same Woolrich jacket, and after some research I found that the middle pockets in front, are hand warmers, and they function very very well because of the material of the interior. Greetings from Chile, south America!

That Woolrich jacket reminds me SO MUCH of the newest jac-shirt from Filson. The pattern and color are extremely similar and the cotton lining is the same shade of yellow. I wonder if they had this jacket in mind when designing it.

So I was looking at old vintage Woolrich and they all seem to be a wool and nylon blend and not 100% wool like the Filson. So that is another data point to consider.

Woolrich now is a shadow of their former selves. They used to be 100% or at least 80% wool now they do the cheapo all too common 50/50 blend. When I look for woolrich I look for the old stuff.

What you would do is cinch the bottom of the pants then put wool socks over the pants and then put a pair of tall usually a boot like the llbean Maine hunting boot over that

Ya that would be the ideal layering option. I don’t have any boots taller than 9” as of now which is why I’m opting for the puttees option. I have strathcona riding boots but there too snug for these thick wool pants.

Anyone here have recommendations for preventing moth damage to woolen garments? I’ve never had issues, but am starting to acquire more wool stuff, and just want to be prepared.

Cedar shims in a plastic bin and your wool will be moth free and smell good.

Newer designs are lower quality. The traditional products, like the Mackinaw Cruiser, are just as well made as ever.

Old Woolrich and Pendleton are. But the newer stuff is more of a Fashion fit

i picked up a woolrich shirt jacket for $13 at burlington recently. is the new stuff as good as the old? probably not, but $13 is pretty cheap. never know what pops up in those types of stores or even thrift stores if youre on the hunt.
