The Buon Vino Mini Jet is the perfect way for the home hobbyist to produce a wine with a commercial shine. Best for small-volume wine making (5 to 10 gallons at a time). Its compact design incorporates a self-priming motorized pump capable of filtering up to 5 gallons in about 15 minutes. Includes a built-in drip tray and drainage tube for easy cleanup.

He reminds me of my current fermentation science professor and advisor. He owned a few wineries and teaches wine based courses at my university. Needless to say, both have helped with my homemade winemaking! I just got the pump as a gift not long ago and was confused how to use it. We used it in class but it was a while ago, and online sources were confusing. Thanks for the great video!

A small detail like clearing the filters and then flushing the water out enhances success. I watched the vid from the manufacturer which left me with far too many questions. No pun intended you cleared things up very nicely.

Great video, though I do have a couple of concerns. I haven't used my Buon Vino yet, currently fermenting a 6.5 gallon Mead, but I have done a couple 1 gallon batches of mead and used a Vinbrite gravity filter for filtering. I racked both and used all 3 levels of media to filter. The Mead was cloudy before first filter with a 5 micron pad, and cleared significantly after it. I waited a week then used the medium pad and it cleared to a polished clear, quite beautiful. Before filtering there was still a skin of sediment on the bottom so I swirled it to get it into suspension then proceeded with the number 2 pad. After another week there was a barely visible layer of sediment in the bottom of the jug, so I used the number 3 1 micron pad for diamond brite filtering, it came out crystal clear and even after a month of being bottled no sediment has accumulated. All that said, I see absolutely no reason not to use the number 1 filtration pad from Buon Vino. It is a 5 or 6 micron pad that will clarify as well as finings without additional chemicals or additives in my Mead. Secondly, I don't like the idea of using a spray bottle such as you used to sanitize the entire unit. This being an electrical device poses too high a risk of damage should some moisture infiltrate the electric pump motor housing. Using a sprayer will almost inevitably introduce moisture where you don't want it. Buon Vino designed this unit to be easy to sanitize. Only a small section of the actual pump comes in contact with your beverage so removing the hoses and sanitizing them then running a sanitizer solution through the hoses into the pump is more than sufficient to sanitize the pump. The only part of the housing I would use the sprayer in the back of the filter mounting area and the drip tray. Every other piece can be submerged in your sanitizing solution away from the pump itself.

Thanks Tim. What do you do if wine gets a thin white layer in the carboy? How do we make sure the wine is good or still good? I don't use any chemicals whatsoever just naturally ferment it and let it clean, this year I bought Mini Jet to filter but I see thin white layer so little concerned although the taste is still great.

Thanks TheRetiredtrucker. I was little concerned about the layer at the top of carboy / surface of wine. Sediments at bottom are fine that is due to fermentation.

Fantastic video as it was so well done! And, thanks for sharing your knowledge! I live in a part of the world where you cannot purchase any alcohol. However, home production and consumption is fine and widely accepted. I have two questions. First, I have a question about the longevity of the filter pads as they are tough to buy where I live and generally must be brought inside a suitcase when returning from travel. That is a huge problem when you run out and have no travel plans. So, #1) Is one set of pads good for just one of the five gallon carboy containers? Or, are they good for two or maybe more Caraboys assuming it is the same recipe? Also, #2) I know some that use Brita charcoal wine filters. If a Brita charcoal filter is used first to decant the raw batch, does that increase the longevity of the filter pads? Any advice you have on this would be greatly appreciated!

I F'd up the first attempt at filtering my FIG wine. I put the plate with the input,and output nozzles behind the last plate. Duh ? I went from a hazy wine to a just as hazy wine. So.....I had extra pads and I attempted to do it right this next time. NOTHING changed. My Fig wine is Still hazy WTF ? My other fig wine which I made the same time, same process is alot clearer. I hope my first 5 gallons will be a learning experience. I'm gonna have to be more meticulous next time I make Wine. I need to take it more serious.

@BrentRF

@@chilimacsting They don't just leak mine sprays out of the top as well as drips out the bottom. So you end up with a spray mess and puddles to clean up. After I spend $70-$80 on honey and 6-9 months in the carboy every drop is precious. I gave up using any sort of filtration and just focus clearing it during the secondary. To make things worse the rep that answered my email was very snotty and indignant that I dared question their product. The home brew supply stored I use stopped carrying them. They would rather sell nothing then to sell garbage and have to deal with unhappy customers.

You can only filter wine or mead that's already completely clear. Filters won't pass cloudy wine, and will block immediately and spray everywhere. Your filter will work as well as mine does in the video, but only on clear product.

Can we use combination of Filter Pads? Like no 1+2 or 2+3.
@TimVandergrift
@TimVandergrift 3 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't work that way: all pads pass wine simultaneously, so the coarsest pad would let all of the wine through until if blocked up, then the medium, and the finest wouldn't see any wine at all. You need to do multiple filter runs if you have to do a three-pad pass.

@@vacamike Early Jewish beliefs included ritual cleanliness--hand and foot washing, bathing before temple, etc. They also included the use of wine in the diet (see Timothy for that!), but it was John Wesley of the Methodists in the modern era who is credited with the phrase 'cleanliness is next to Godliness'. By changing 'God' for 'good', I made it about wine, and not spiritual purity, punning on the commonality of the two words. Puns are, after all, the lowest comedy nominator.

I'm not a fan of cartridge filters. They're designed for high-flow/low retained solids, and are not always easy to completely sanitise, depending on the filter configuration. But if you've found a setup that works for your application, good on you.
