In Egham one unlucky man’s boat is slowly sinking into the river Thames. Floating high above the current only the night before when it was moored here, the only thing now keeping this boat from sinking to the riverbed is the ropes that hold it to the dock. When the owner came back to continue his sails the day after, he had the rather unpleasant surprise of being greeted by the environmental agency. Thinking he was just going to be told off for parking it in the wrong place he was horrified to see his aquatic home sinking deep bellow the water and on top of all this being told that recovering the boat would cost him a lofty sum by any standard.
The recovery team included almost a dozen team members, divers, a powerful pump to get the water out, the dock keeper to lower the water level and finally a small crane to lift the boat out from under. As you can imagine such a large crew is a difficult and costly expense and after being filled with water the boat now needs to be stripped out and have its engines replaces, a complete nightmare for the owner. But what caused it to happen in the first place?
When he parked with the stern end or back part of the boat against the current, the pressure was hitting a weak section which eventually broke and caused it to rapidly fill with water. Always moor up with the head of your boat facing the stream, a costly lesson that I’m sure this sailor will never forget.
