Towing a Sinking Narrowboat [Ep 5]

This weeks video shows the fun and games towing a boat as I helped take a sinking narrowboat to Wincham Wharf so it could be craned out of the water for an inspection and to fix a problem with the propeller. We also pay a visit to the Old Broken Cross Pub.

Do narrow boats have bilge pumps? Well, this video has a little of everything in it. Plus, a happy ending; Mouse got his boat fixed and I hope it wasn't too expensive to have it fixed. Always fun to watch you drink a little rum and woohooing. Grumpy people don't wave back because, well, they are grumpy.

When I lived in Surbiton i had a cabin cruiser in Thames Ditton Marina. I know exactly what you mean by the snobs. Majority of people are pleasant on the river but you do get arrogant assholes that think the river is just for them. I use to always wait until they said hello first. Just binge watching your stuff. Looks like such a great life. 🌹

A lot of people are insecure or selfconscious, some are entitled and do not talk to commoners or woman pirates who are in charge of their wonderfully kind lives, they are never amused 🎉and probably live boring lives. Chug on Captain, you are a favorite regardless of their stiff necks! Woohoo!

Rum, my favorite drink. I’m 77 and every day we stop whatever we are doing and I have my rum and my wife has her warm beer. Best part of retirement.

I’m sure he had a bilge pump but the water came in so fast I don’t think it could cope 😩😂 he is all safe and sound now though thankfully !! I’m so glad he didn’t take me roughly from behind too - I wasn’t ready 😂😂😂😂

And there were two angels on the canalside who alsoclose friends of the pirate boat crew who ran to their boat and grabbed a 12-volt pump and we run it off my generator and without those two angels i.e. more people from the boating community my boat would have sunk

Recently subscribed to your channel, I’m an ex boater ( 16 years ) now living in Australia. When boating I always did as you, smiled , waved, said hello, and seemed to find the occasional boater who did not respond, but in general I found it a very lovely community. I did the same with angler’s, some of those would turn their heads away.

An old navy engineer gave me a tip, if your stern gland is pissing in, get in the water with some clingfilm or a plastic bag n put it over / wrap the prop shaft and you'll stop the leak...long enough to get towed anyway ;)

As a new subscriber I’m thoroughly enjoying your videos. Hats off to you for helping Mouse. As a cyclist, I have experience the same regarding ‘non-responders’ to a cheery hello. My general rule of thumb now is if they don’t make eye contact I just presume (for whatever reason) they don’t want to engage & just leave them to it. Thank you 👍

Re the unfriendly ignoramuses who snub your cheery greetings - I live in Northumberland and people are always friendly. Drivers wave as they go past, everybody asks how are you doing, and even kids acknowledge older people. Then I visit family in urban areas and when I nod, or speak, they do exactly as you describe. I find it quite annoying. Great series, and a lot of fun. Enjoying the vlogs.

Lovely video though in thinking about the great pubs in the area, don’t forget the Stanley Arms at Anderton who looked after Mouse whilst he was trying to sought things out … and fixed him up with assistance at WIncham Wharf.

I've come to the conclusion its the boat ! I have the same problem with people as I have a very similar boat. where as friends that I cruise with everybody says hello to them! as for the reason, jelousy I guess is the main . good looking craft and vintage engine what more can you say! keep the vlogs coming ....

Don't take it personally when people snub you. They are just plain rude. I find those kind of people a "challenge" and smile and wave and laugh, just like you did. A small tip if you find yourself doing this again: cross the lines in front of the bow instead of going straight to the dollies. This will shift the pivot point to in front of the towed boat, which will stop the bow of the towed boat fighting against the steering you're doing. This is how the old boat men and women used to tow their butty when unloaded (and when not abreast of each other). Google image "cross straps" to see what I mean. Hopefully you don't have to save many sinking boats!

Hello Heidi, the reason people look the other way when you say hello could be because they are excessively shy, or perhaps on the autistic spectrum, and find your extrovert greeting anxiety provoking; they do not have it in their nature to be able respond in kind, so look away instead, as an avoidance or coping strategy. Alternatively, they could be stuck up snobs!

Lol your comment about the snubber made "Mrs Bucket/ Bouquet" (remember that programme?) come to mind and next thought the majority of the community on the cut most probably aren't like that. Mark from Well deck Diaries towed a boat in his latest vlog, so you good ones are out there. Take care =-)

Heidi, some people are just miserable sods. I get them all the time when I'm cycling. I wave at everyone on a bike (and walkers too) and while most wave back, some don't. Why I dunno. Maybe their shorts are bunching up and they're miserable. But don't let them get you down. Keep up your smiley face and pleasant banter. BTW I'm a lifetime rum drinker too. If I come over again (from Canada) I'll find you and buy you a bottle! Maybe we can have a wee nip together (of rum!!). Arrrrrrr.

Aww, you are amazing, this is what is it all about, helping each other out, a little gesture that goes a long way, well done to you. As for your other point, don't know, it happens in 'normal' life too, say hello to someone they look the other way or think you are some kind of weirdo, they just aren't people people.

You’re a good ‘un, Heidi! I’ve never had a fellow boater blank me completely. I’ve had a few who just return my cheery greeting with just the hint of a nod, but never had one turn away. Maybe they’re embarrassed at being hailed by a lady pirate?

I 've been following a few of the you tube narrow boaters from here in the U.S. so far all have been great. I like the attitude and the videos so far Please keep up the exceptional work I didnt subscribe to all but finding you here I had to subscribe right at the beginning. What happens is those snobby ones that won't give the time of day, are the ones that come banging on the roof at 1am cos their boats sinking. Or they can't bleed the diesel through and when you've laid upside down for an hour cos, they've rounded off the nut heads trying to turn em the wrong, they offer a couple of those stumpy bottle french beers that even kill my plants if we empty the dregs on em. One of my crew was ace at shaming em, especially if they mention passing us early. He asks to see the back of their heads, then says oh recognize you know. Boom, Boom.
