Filthy PS2 Fat - Teardown & Clean

In this video I disassemble this Playstation 2 fat model SCPH-39002 because it is by far the dirtiest console I've ever had. This is an in depth video on how to pull apart a PS2 and the disc drive. I discovered that the console is modded too which was a surprise. I also replaced the fan. Now that it is clean it runs and plays games perfectly, and the disc drive opens and closes perfectly now whereas before it would constantly get stuck. Thank you for watching! Quick update! I got a new ribbon cable for the front buttons and all the lights are now working perfectly! Ps sorry about the music dropping down & up in volume in the disassembly part of the video, apparently I somehow missed that when I watched the video back 3 times. Anyways hope you enjoyed!

Great Job!! What kind of screwdriver did you use to open the disc drive? I want to clean the laser.

Pulling the ribbon cable for the power button as you recommended to unplug it at the start is something I'd recommend against. Doing it that way made the blue piece fall off which means it won't really stay in. Also couldn't really see you reattaching the power button cable. Otherwise a very helpful video

This console had a hard life and was so fragile so I think that’s why the blue piece fell off. You’re right though it definitely made it difficult however the console is still working great today!

My PS2 had a Spider Family in it with webs and eggs :D I screamed the hell out xD They were all dead, but it was so disgusting after discovering one, another one peaks around the platine :D am now scared of PS2 Teardowns

Oh no! How do they even get in there! I’ve been pretty lucky and have only found one dead spider in a PS1 and even then it was pretty small

Hi, I just got a PS2 FAT SCPH-39004 and the fan is very noisy (like all PS2). Do you know any replacement SILENT FAN alternative? (not external FAN mod that impact on the design of the Console..)

Unfortunately I haven’t heard of any silent fan replacement sorry. A brand new fan may be quieter than the original one however

Very nice, well done. Any oil is better than none at all, but for plastic use silicone grease as it doesn't react to the plastic.

I have a ps2 fat and the battery is still ok in it I am worried it will stop working soon anybody know the life span of these things I found it at a thrift store couple years ago and never got the time to play until now

The original batteries last for years, but even then all it is is the battery for the clock so it wouldn’t be the biggest issue of it did end up dying. Wouldn’t be too hard to replace if you’re concerned

The ribbon cables can be tricky, but just take your time and keep trying

Just make sure it’s unlatched before trying to attach, and take your time!

that oil works fine, it just dries out quicker. the proper lube you should be using is a silicone based dielectric grease.

@@TheBygoneEra personally I use petroleum jelly on lubricating parts. I googled it and it turns out it's the best alternative for oil and paste lubricants look it up if you're intersted

nice vid but one thing needed sorting. Why wasnt the metal RF shielding dipped in rust remover? It wasnt even cleaned up. Such a shame after all the effort on the rest of it

Removing rust takes a lot of time so I didn’t do it as I feel it’s not necessary. It was cleaned up, I gave it a scrub off camera to remove all the loose particles but didn’t show that as it’s not that exciting to watch. It still looks rusty, yes, but it is definitely still doing the job it is supposed to. Thank you for the feedback though, it’s definitely appreciated 🙂

@@TheBygoneEra I was lowkey waiting for you to show us you derusting the metal RF shield, there’s people like odd tinkering that records when they dip it in a solvent, and leave it, and then when most of the rust is gone, they film it and later edit it to seem like it didn’t take long. That would of been really satisfying, especially since it looked so foul lol.

Would the ps2 laser improve its performance if cleaned? I think the laser part was so weak if compared to ps3 model, which is a bomb.

If it’s dirty, a clean will definitely help! However they do deteriorate over time too

Never going to open another ps2 ever again. Absolutely mangled all my ribbon cables trying to get them back in. Terrible terrible console fo work on, so much wasted time 😰

If you’re gonna take out and put it back together you really should’ve been more clear on the reassembly part. Edit: well it seems like this isn’t a good video to use when you yourself is going through the process while watching and going back and forth between the vid. You’re just gonna get a shit ton of ads.

I think I’ve done a good job of covering enough in the reassembly without letting the video get ridiculously long. Compared to other videos out there, I know some don’t even film the reassembly at all because after all it is just reverse of the disassembly. As for the ads, to this day I haven’t received a single cent from this video, or any others on my channel for that matter. Welcome to KZfaq. I do hope you were able to reassemble your PS2 in the end and it’s all working smoothly now

What about it? I cleaned up the excess rust particles and there is no moisture inside it anymore so it won’t rust any further. I didn’t find it necessary to completely restore the shields to immaculate condition because they still do their job and won’t be seen anyway.

When I say cleaned, I mean all the loose rust partials were dusted/scrubbed off. I wasn’t going to the effort of restoring the rust as I didn’t find it necessary. We all start somewhere
