Theres a money incentive to constantly engage in the culture war stuff for a lot of people plus just some straight up Schadenfreude.

I was worried when "Safe Horny" was coined that its meaning would get diluted from "things hypocrites happen to like" to "bad thing I must object to" Lo and behold, things like muscle ladies and MILFs are now being considered woke red flags. Give it time and soon entire subgenres like Yaoi and Yuri games will be considered DEI trash.

Supergiant's previous game Transistor had two gay characters, but it was incredibly subtle, and they were characters who played a role in the story first and foremost. That's how it should be done. The tumblr stuff only becomes a problem when those people, usually not the devs or writers, reduce otherwise complex characters to their sexuality and nothing else, "[X] says gay rights", that kind of shit.

I've started replacing it with "stupid" in my vocabulary, i.e. "That movie was really fucking stupid."

My current viewpoint is as follows: the conflict at hand is in many ways irrational, driven by nihilist nerds whose highest purpose is to show off and/or socially triumph over the other in showy ways for attention. The only real thing that matters, when you get caught up enough in the mire, is whether you facilitate that triumph or not. If you can't or won't, up to a nebulously defined extreme, you're the enemy. They also don't have the organization to evaluate what is effective or what their long term goals are-- this is part of why "anti-woke" sentiment often adopts irrelevant extremist ideologies. It's the main reason why Loli advising to pick your battles and take care to not make yourself look insane is something of a controversial statement. The facts don't seem to completely matter inasmuch as people can weather or evade the discredit from being found out as a liar (which is why we get people who outright lie about media-- this isn't even new, anime nerds have been lying about and misrepresenting authorial statements and stories for as long as I can remember). Accordingly, what things actually mean doesn't entirely matter-- which is at least part of why there's vagary about what "woke" means (especially considering that the word was coopted from black American activism and its meaning changed). I don't think these culture keyboard warriors have a good answer for how they'd react if an indie developer sincerely, without influence by DEI/ESG, wanted to include the kind of things prescribed by said initiatives. I've seen this play out just a little, and I suspect that-- at large-- they'd just assume that such people were being strongarmed or otherwise heavily influenced by said initiatives. Look at the reaction to Hades 2's Hestia-- they forced that into their usual "look at how Americans uglify everything, unlike the Japanese (or even the ancient Greeks)" without once considering who the mythological Hestia actually is (and why Hades 2's Hestia would be thus designed) and without once considering the possibility that Supergiant Games, Fujino Oomori, and the ancient Greeks have _entirely different purposes and design philosophies._
