I'm probably alone in this idea but if we ever get a Final Fantasy 9-2 I would want Beatrix to be the main character. She went through alot and it was wonderful seeing her internal struggle and character progression throughout the game.

Not gonna lie: Beatrix scared me the first time I played this game, with her overwhelming power, kinda eerie battle music, and her menacing yet honorable attitude. It's one of the few RPG antagonists that really has the power he/she brags about, and I think that makes her both awesome and fearsome in terms of story/gameplay of their respective game (Saturos and Menardi from Golden Sun are the second scariest RPG antagonists on my list), I know the game itself requires to be defeated THRICE by her, but let's be honest, even without that, defeating Beatrix would be a pain in the ass. Even now I feel nothing more than respect for this waifu, and she became one of my FF characters of all time.

Beatrix didn't snap at the soldier because she felt that she might become superfluous I think. I think she snapped at her because she insulted Steiner and the knights of Pluto, and Beatrix secretly respected Steiner, the only man who had ever beaten her, and didn't want to hear someone disrespect them.

Yay! So glad Beatrix was covered :) Final Fantasy 9 is and has always been my favorite installment and I always thought Beatrix's character was so complex and needed more love.

Ask yourselves this: How much devotion does it take to willingly do monstrous thing to protect the ones you care about? The country that you love? She set her heart and will aside for it, until she just couldn't bear it no more. Beatrix is a good person at heart. And her character arc is amazing.

Fantastic video! Beatrix was always a favorite character of mine due to her character progression through the story. She represented an inner conflict many people experience because she had to choose between doing what was right or doing what was expedient. She chose to do right and became one of my favorites in the process.

I was always happy with Beatrix's redemption but I didn't realise her character development was actually more thought out than I had remembered.

I study game design and I've always fancied making a prequel to FFIX revolving around Beatrix as the main character, with some of the more recognizable unplayables also having a playable appearance. Beatrix was never evil, even at the start of the game, so a game where she becomes a loyal knight to the queen and Alexandria would be amazing. You'd see the origin of the whole Beatrix/Steiner thing. You'd be her as she grows powerful and eventually defeats 100 knights in single combat. You see Fratley lose his memory, probably fighting with, or next to, Beatrix. Maybe Lani could be in there, or gilgamesh. We'd get to meet Garnets father, and find out why Beatrix was so devoted to him and the queen, we'd see the queen when she was still gentle. We'd have a small Garnet running around, perhaps even a young street urchin with a tail. We'd get to see an intact Burmecia. We could see the death of the king and the subsequent change in Brahne. Optional boss, an eidolon that is locked away on an island that later floats away to become chocobos paradise (starting Brahnes obsession with eidolons perhaps, and loses its form. There is so much there, so much potential, although I'd probably do it more like Crisis core, with an active single character battle system rather than the traditional FFIX ATB system since I think it would fit her better.

I loved how Beatrix was literrally a hybrid of a warrior and a mage. There's no one like her in the game who demonstrated strong attacks and sword skills while also capable of casting an array of useful white magic such as cura, full-life, and holy.

One of my absolute favorite characters ever from FF. Her and Edea made me want NPCs to be playable more than just a short period of time, if you get to play them or on your team at all.

I was so gutted when I found out Beatrix wasn't a permanent character. Good thing the Alternate Reality Mod for this game fixes that.

Can we just have the videos for the entire cast of 9? They all have the most fleshed out, meaningful and best storylines in the entire final fantasy franchise :)

Beatrix's piano theme is one of my three favorite tunes in FF. Tied with Terra's theme from FF6 and the end theme of nearly every FF.

Especially when she accidentally picked the love letter from Eiko and thought it was written by Steiner and the moment they fought alongside each other in Alexandria to help civilians escape from mist monsters. When a wounded Steiner told Beatrix that he will protect her. He's the manliest manly knight yo!!Never have I imagine that a non protagonist rpg character would have a very interesting love story.

As a FF9 lore nut, I have 2 issues from early in your video. #1: Alexandria’s military has always been mostly made up of female soldiers. Going back as far as the 9th Lindblum War in 1389, over 400 years before the start of the game. According to several in-game NPCs, Alexandria is historically female-dominated. #2: The Knights of Pluto is a historical institution, the only all-male squad within the Alexandrian military, they’ve been around for over 200 years. Going back as far as the 15th Lindblum War in 1601. Their job has always been to protect Alexandria Castle and the city while the mostly-female army goes out to fight. Steiner’s childhood dream was to join the Pluto Knights. But other than that, good job!

She was one of the epicest enemies I've ever seen, even in my childhood, I've had her as a example of duty and of being a true soldier.

I just played through FF9 for the first time and really I loved Beatrix :) she's definitely one of my favorite characters in the game and I really wanted her to be a party member so badly

Beatrix is quite literally my favorite FF character. She is strong, pragmatic, intense, proud, talented, but also insightful and intelligent as well. Everything you've said about her reminded me of Cecil's arch as well as General Leo's, especially with both of them reaffirming their duties as Paladins. There's some reflection of Kain as well, being used by the primary antagonist. I feel she also very closely follows Celes's arch; a female general in an imperialistic empire who comes to regret their role in the genocide the kingdom inflicts and takes up arms against both the kingdom and the people pulling the strings behind it. She's a great example of how FFIX took many of the great story archs from previous games and rolled them together into a beautiful narrative that also had its own identity and story to tell. I recently played a hack that allows you to add her to the party after the attack on Alexandria and she was a part of a few scenes that take place after that (for example, she joins Garnet and Eiko at the Water Temple, expressing a desire to protect Garnet after unwittingly allowing her to become captured previously). While the hack did not give her Trance, she felt very much a part of the story as a whole and it felt more complete having nine characters in FFIX (I know FFVII has nine, and FFVIII has six, but I'm a sucker for matching numbers). Beatrix is my favorite character in FFIX. She's a badass knight who fought with her loyalty and morality, and totally should have been a playable character. And her romance with Steiner showed her softer side too. I'd main her in an instant if she joined NT.

To be honest, the NPC that sticks out the most to me in the entire franchise is Maechen. At this point, you are probably asking "who?", quite rightly. A minor NPC, by all accounts, he served as the historian of FFX. He was always happy to share details of the region we were about to explore - and with a very melodious narration. He was so embroiled in the search of History, he forgot... he died. All that time we were playing FFX and he was regaling us with the history of Spira, he forgot himself an Unset.

In every FF that has Save the Queen, this is the one that always stick out in my mind.

Thanks for this, Beatrix is my favorite FFIX character (and since FFIX is my favorite FF, and FF is my favorite type of game, that puts her high on my list of things in general). Just started playing FFIX again with one of the main reasons being an urge to do those small segments with her again. Only problem is I am stuck at the " saving Garnet after Cleyra" part because I want to lvl Marcus to lvl 99 in that hallway but the game keeps crashing somewhere during the 10+ hours it takes to actually do that. So some positive FFIX content is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, as much as I love Steiner as a character, and his arc, I think he should have died in the battle for Alexanderia after confessing his love for Beatrix and saving her from a fatal attack. She could have replaced him as a party member for the remainder of the game, and truly learned what it meant to have something worth protecting with your life. That being said, 9 is by far my favorite Final Fantasy, and I love the story as is. I just think that would have been an interesting take on the story.

You clearly have a gift to explain Final Fantasy stories. I cleared this game a lot of times, but a long time ago, when my english was not enough to understand 100% of the story. I didn't know that Beatrix was more than a brave knight and there was actually a story behind of it. Now I am willing to clear it again and read every part of the conversations.

Beatrix would make a great prequel. Beatrix, Rose of May. I wrote a short story on Beatrix. I know her last name is Beatrix, but her first name is never mentioned. So I just called her May. May Beatrix. During the games story, it is never mentioned what happend to her eye besides a duel with Adelbert Steiner, but because nothing is never mentioned through out the game to reference this, I dismissed it. I wrote that May challenged the Griffin in Treno's weapon shop and it cut out her eye. This is referenced to the Griffin's heart May's family sold to the auction house after she became General of Alexandria. It reads "Fear its soul, for it know no terror." Beatrix grew up in Treno so this made sense. She joins the Alexandrian Army at 16 and climbs the ranks, however a year later she loses the duel to Steiner, which at this point I wrote the patch was already there and it disabled her a bit in combat, for she had not mastered her inability to see through only one eye. After this incident she trains harder and returns to Treno to kill the Griffin and cut out its heart.

Beatrix is and always will be my favorite Final Fantasy character.

I remember when freya and Steiner stayed with Beatrix. After seeing how much damage beatrix did, I was like she really didn't need their help at all. It is funny how long in the game it takes for steiner to get the skills Beatrix learned at her initial introduction. I wonder where he finds out all this background information. Did he read an ultimanium?

Beatrix is actually very briefly playable (just after Garnet/Sarah is rescued from being beheaded by her adoptive mother), so not fully an NPC. She is a beautiful and incredibly strong fighter - a shame she is only temporarily in the party.

I've always wanted certain characters to become playable at least post-game, such as Beatrix. FF VIII's Seifer after his final defeat would have made sense as well, along with Fujin & Raijin.

this woman is a total badass!! she already has all the major sword skill that steiner only gets to learn far later in the game (overwhelming "shock", anyone?) and not only that, her exclusive weapon, save the queen not only is the only weapon to increase all the stats that can be raised with level up, it also has a very unique property that makes it alone the most powerful weapon in the game, although it always shows a 23 attack stat, it actually becomes more and more powerful as the user gains levels, being more damaging than the other best weapons. it is a shame that such a weapon can only be equipped by her and one need a cheat device like gameshark to allow this weapon to be equipped by someone else and see its amazingness, even though one is allowed to get a small glimpse of its effect in her scene with steiner against mistodons. finish the first 2 battles to level her up a little and then see that steiner with a over 30 atk stat( ice brand or coral sword by the time) cannot deal as much damage as beatrix's save the queen that shows a miserable 23 atk stat. beatrix is too damn powerful and is well deserving of her title as general. baku said to her "you have some big heart, unlike that knucklehead steiner. no wonder why the women run the show around here!"... i wish she would join dissidia opera omnia... that would be so awesome

Played FF9 for the 1st time last year. I totally understand why FF9 is so beloved by the fanbase. It's a good FF game, and Beatrix was a great character. She's as beautiful as she's badass. She's the only character I've ever seen in a video game story that is touted as "Undefeated" and retains that title. You lose in the end every time you fight against her. In most games you fight these so called matchless opponents and beat them, but not here. Truly unique.

There's a NPC in Alexandria right before Dagger's coronation that says Beatrix would have been a better queen, and honestly, I kind of agree. As much as I like Dagger, she's kinda lacking in bad-assness and military experience. Which Beatrix has plenty of

Ok so I know you made this video awhile ago, and I dont know if this was mentioned so far, however I wanted to mention that when I first played FF9, I could not help but feel Beatrix reminded of someone. And that is Misa Hayase from SDF Macross, or also known as Lisa Hayes from Robotech. Look her up, her face and hair (without the missing eye) look incredibly similar!

Final Fantasy 9 is to me, by far, the best in the franchise. Characters have a complexity about them that makes you connect with them. I love how Zidane was not your traditional emo main character, 'cause let's be honest, FF games have a lot of those; and of course my girl Beatrix is cool AF. She is not only complex as a character, but also has an incredible strength both in body and mind. I love that no one of consequence to the main party died in this games 'cause that was done like 3 or 4 times in the previous games, but also that the characters have closure. You can watch every single one of them evolving and trying to find their place in the world, while also trying to find thmeselves. I wish I had had a chance to play more with her and use the all mighty Save the Queen, ¿cuz let's be honest, how cool would that hav been? And well, as a character she is the embodiment of persistence. There a re no excuses, either you give it your all to reach your dreams or you self-pity yourself for the rest of your life. To me, that was the most amazing part of her character.

I really want a final fantasy 9 remake with Beatrix as a main playable character

Beatrix is one of favorite female FF characters in general, and among my top favs within FF9 itself. It's hard to put into words, but, she just has such an interesting development. A rather detailed arc within a story that didn't revolve around her, yet, that didn't diminished her character. Out of a lot of NPCs, she has one of the most well written in the FF franchise. Going from a major threat, to a potential ally, to even having a budding relationship with someone who she has history with.

Actually, you can play as Beatrix in short parts of final fantasy 9. She did not permanently join the group, but you could use a Game Shark or Action Replaly if you wanted to put her back in your party.

Steiner formed the Knights of Pluto? If you mean the original Knights of Pluto, then I think you're wrong about that. In the Alexandria market you can see statues of the Knights that are clearly not the one's at Steiner's command. It all points to the Knights of Pluto being some kind of elite unit that has existed for several generations. My personal headcanon for Steiner's backstory is pretty fun. It starts out with him as a rookie in the KoP, during a training session with the female army. The KoP are at this point the highest ranking elite unit in Alexandria and the royal guard, and have a sense of superiority over the rest of the army. Their captain issues a challenge that even their rookie could defeat their best soldier (Beatrix). Steiner has insane strenght but is outclassed and pushed around by Beatrix. As he's about to loose, one of his comrades (a dark knight) discretely cheats for him by enhancing his sword with a blizzard spell (that's were he learned the magic sword technique). This catches both Steiner and Beatrix off guard and the ice launched from his strike ends up slashing out one of her eyes. The other knights play it off as if it was Steiner's own magic being used and then mock the army further. Later on, the KoP are sent on some kind of mission, but are ambushed. They are outnumbered and the captain orders Steiner to retreat to the castle and inform Alexandria of the situation while they hold the enemy at bay, giving him a chance to escape. When Steiner gets back he tells them about the ambush and that only he is still alive. The King automatically assumes that Steiner won the battle and was the last man standing on the battlefield (when the truth is that he ran). The king makes Steiner the new captain and orders him to train the new Knights of Pluto. But since he is only a rookie with no real combat experience, he does a really bad job of training the new Knights. Meanwhile Beatrix quickly rises through the ranks and her army manages to gain favor over the incompetent Pluto Knights. I think something in those lines would really add to their rivalry and explain why Steiner is such a bad knight sometimes in a sympathetic way. It would also add to his character and explain his extreme sense of loyalty by giving him a dose of survivor's guilt. Plus it was mentioned that he was a veteran, when he tells Garnet he doesn't want her to experience war as he has.

This is definitely a very interesting story, and Beatrix is definitely a very interesting character. But there's one small detail you neglected to explain. Why is one of her eyes always covered? Or did they not explain that in the game?

Since you've done one of these origin videos on Beatrix, I really hope to see one of Aranea Highwind on here in the future! Probably the most interesting character in all of FFXV!

That cleyra artwork is too gorgeous. Here is something for everyone to consider and feel gleeful joy over. We are making comic book movies, not just one or two, but entire comic book universes. We've been making movies out of books for years, with nerd favorites such as LotR becoming massive hits. We've even made some crappy video game movies. But if we look at the first crappy fantasy movies, and consider the time span between them and the great ones we have currently, it becomes more than likely that somewhere during the remaining 60 or so years of our lives, we will get realistic, high-quality movies made out of all our favorite games. Somewhere there is someone who played FFIX and experienced the same feelings Peter Jackson felt when reading LotR, or David and Dan felt when reading A song of ice and fire. And they will try to make those games into movies for love instead of a quick buck. And with the advancements in technology, that fantasy world might even be created with rat people as believable as any Thanos.
