Final Fantasy VIII OST - PC (DirectMusic Producer)

This was all recorded through DirectMusic Producer, after setting that program up, loading the segment files (sgt or sgp) and inserting the game's custom "FF8.DLS" (~7,87 MB) and letting that soundbank overwrite everything. Is this accurate, and how it should sound ingame? I don't know.
The music tracks were recorded with one-time looping. For accuracy, I always restarted DirectMusic Producer for each track, as I noticed it can otherwise produce weird behavior, like certain sequenced tracks not registering/sounding sometimes through play and/or messing with the tempo, and then mysterious, unexpected crashes.
There are only 4 XG ones in it, which were most likely intended for playback on an XG capable device: 001xg-win.sgt, 005xg-Battle.sgt, 013xg-Battle2.sgt, 047xg-Kaiso.sgt - these do not automatically attempt to load the "FF8.DLS" collection. Instead of that, I recorded these into MIDIs and played back with the Yamaha MU500 too in both GM and XG mode (this is not included in the video, but available in the music archive).
Certain tracks also don't automatically enforce to load "FF8.DLS" (the game's custom soundbank), so they may only use the basic MS synth for playback - these are the safe ones one could use the ripped GM MIDIs for as is, without any special instrument or drumset being involved. I also recorded those separately with only that, but also with the custom soundbank (which sounds better IMHO, and is what I use in the video).
There are two special cases: "Eyes On Me" is a WAV file and the track numbered as "043" and named as "concert" is in 8 separate files, I mixed all those into one track to make it more suitable for recording, rather than messing around trying to get the timing right from 8 recorded audio files. Finally, the "1-01 Liberi Fatali" and "4-11 Ending Theme" are missing, likely because they are baked into the FMV.

It's been almost 25 years and I can still remember in detail the opening cinematic and thrill I felt when I first popped in and loaded up the game on my PS1.. game defined a significant portion of my tween years.. waking up to Quistis talking to me at the infirmary, the attack on Dollet.. the dancing/meeting scene with Rhiona.. LEGENDARY!

all versions now has the ps1 soundtrack even the switch version final fantasy 8 remastered but this version yeah it was great on pc in the past.

Duuuude the first time I saw the intro I were like WOW!!! And when I got to disc 2 I was like wait whats happening!? It was the first time I actually had to put in a disc 2 and I was so afraid I'd lose all my progress since I barely beat the boss xD

I had the urge to log in back to my YT accounts after years of inactive just to thank you for this video. I deliberately tried to find the version song "Ride On" as how I remembered it 20 years ago when I played the game on my PC. I like that version as for me it sounds better and more joyful. However all other videos of the song on this platform are just taken from the OST discs. Thanks for the effort that you made, now can I fully enjoy the song in my memory again 👍

Yes, I uploaded this because I also couldn't find the PC version of the OST. I understand that the PSX one is much better, but this is still here for preservation, just in case someone wants it and doesn't have the game and DirectMusic Producer.

@@ulzzangloverxD You will be suprised how many kids back then who had a blast with their MIDI Soundcards to play FF7 and 8 back in the day. If you ever own YAMAHA Soundcards, these MIDI tracks were a whole new experience for us back then. (And not everyone had a PS1 back in the day)

Hi. For me, it's the best Final Fantasy. I hung on to everything. The soundtrack, Squall's charisma, the story, the depth of feelings.

That was mentioned in the end of the video's description. To reiterate: it's not present among the audio files. "4-11 Ending" is also missing. "3-20 Eyes on Me" is another exception (as a WAV file). So these three tracks are special and didn't have an alternative version for use with DirectMusic Producer.

FF7 is definitely better than 8 but only by a thin margin however, when it comes to OST 8 is way better than 7. Coming from a non-bias fan of both game
