There will be an Ultimecia in the future. Her existence, persecution, and defeat are inevitable. You can't change the past, and Ultimecia's death in the past created the present and future. Now what if that Ultimecia was not a random person yet to be born, but one of the fighters who would perpetuate her own tragic destiny?

She said...she wanted Squall to kill her if she was possessed. If she is Ultimecia...he did.. Also Rinoa said she would be waiting there for him. Her castle was built right above the orphanage.

In the ending Squall saw a glimpse of Ultimecia when he was trying to remember Rinoa's face. After that, i assume he realized the truth and thought he should've let her die in space, which was the last thing he saw before he teared up and looked up. I assume from then on, Squall knew the truth, but would stay by her side no matter what. Ultimately becoming her GF Griever(only Rinoa knew who or what Griever was). I hope if Square decide to remake FFVIII, they should really make this theory a reality. That would make Ultimecia and Griever soooooo much deeper and tragic. Would probably be the most mind bending story in the FF series. Much like Forbidden Siren and the Terminator series, it's a time loop where Rinoa will forever live and repeat the cycle by going back thru time to pass her powers onto Edea. And for that Squall is willing to fight for her

Square says its not real, but the signs are there. Maybe they did it unconsciously, if they remake it, it would be a smart move to incorporate these elements more into the storyline because of the ambiguous dialogue in the opening, literally makes total sense now.

"When I played the game with this theory in mind, it blew me away. It was like I played the game for the first time all over again." Could not have said it better. I played this game for the last time over 20 years ago, and THAT made me feel like playing it again. As many have already said, I think this plot line had been in the works, but was cut at some point before the launch. A happy ending sells better, right? The idea of the cheerful, naive heroine plunging into a grieving madness and going full circle to become the antagonist, fighting her past allies may be too dark for the franchise... but it's also to good to be ignored!

@@whirled_peas Yeah I forget where I read it but it was along the lines of Ultemicia being Rinoah storyline was too dark for their brand and the director said to cut it etc. Yeah they probably do stuff like that to keep the brand cohesion going since they appear in other games and stuff. Like this is our product and that's the way it is. Makes more sense to say that if they cut it out because they did not want that philosophy associated with the game where as if it was never in the game, why even make a statement about it? Let people believe what they want, they are role playing after all. Just seems very defensive/reactional.

@@whirled_peas Play other Final Fantasy games. U not interacting with the party until the very end is extremely common, especially in older FF games.. FF1, FF3, FF4, FF5 and FF9 all had a hidden villain who didn't interact with the part or even physically appear until the final boss. They do this kind of villain so often it would not be surprising if she was just another "Cloud of Darkness" type villain.

Wait has anyone thought of the fact that the squall is dead theory and R=U could work together? What if Rinoa turns evil due to the death of squall and the reason she wants to compress time is to see squall once again? Since Ultimatcia’s reason for wanting to compress time isn’t really explained beyond the whole “being evil for the sake of it” thing, it could provide an explanation

I know this is an older video but just recently the FF developer that "debunked" this theory retracted that statement saying that it wasn't *his* idea but he co-wrote it with two others and it's a possibility they had it in mind. Love the idea but it's difficult to reconcile the fact that Rinoa's life is frequently put into danger at the behest of Ultimecia; that seems counter-productive at best. Maybe Ultimecia forgot her own origin. Maybe (and Ellone mentions this) sending a conscience back in time can't change events, only people, and Ultimecia doesn't understand this so she makes futile attempts that are all thwarted and we still end up in a timeline where Rinoa exists to become Ultimecia.
@GUNDAMURX73
@GUNDAMURX73 Жыл бұрын
Even if Kitase has "debunked" the theory... does that matter? It may not be the intent of the story's writer, but the audience can pretty solidly draw this theory from the events of the game. Beyond that... is a story only what its author intends? Or can you take something different from it, regardless of the author's original intent? I think the answer is what divides some games between "media" and "art". Personally, I think there's enough you can see throughout the game which can support this theory to say it's plausible. Further, in my opinion it only enhances FF8's story and themes.
@Miriam_J_
@Miriam_J_ Жыл бұрын
@@GUNDAMURX73 Exactly. People are too caught up in what the director says for a game that is decades old at this point and isn't getting an FF8-2 this far in. The story is effectively over, unlike FF7, so you can think whatever you want and have that be true to you. It's the power of art. I've seen some people make baseless claims about there being proof of it being cut, and it kinda just makes me sad. Some people need validation from others to enjoy a story. If everyone doesn't come out thinking their headcanons is true, they'll make shit up to make you believe it is. I think we all know how fast lies about FF spread, especially after FF12s director came out ONLY THIS YEAR to debunk the "Vaan was added late into development, he wasn't supposed to be the main character" lie that had been spreading like crazy around the internet since the games release. People will lie out of their ass and convince others it's true just so they personally can enjoy a story more, and it's sad.

Either way, I believe that in Ultimecia's time period, all SeeD members are downright mean and ruthless witch hunters that destroy sorceresses with extreme prejudice. Consider the legendary SeeD that will kill Ultimecia prophecy. A prophecy that Ultimecia is aware of and yet appears to be completely alone. The only explanation that the story offers for the origin of this prophecy, and her knowing it, is if it’s a corrupted memory from when she said it would be OK if Squall kills her (and only him). Why would they include this detail in the story otherwise? It’s just a random line otherwise. There seem to be far too many “random lines” like that to for them all to be a coincidence. Also Kitase retracted the statement that R=U was false a few months ago, look it up

2:17 Without Seifer, Squall might not have met Rinoa. What is even more interesting is that Squall does not have much backstory of his own. After Big Sis' leaves the orphanage for White SeeD, we learn that Squall studied at Balamb Garden under Quistis and has a rivalry with Seifer. Previously, Seifer was out and about all summer getting to know Rinoa on the Contienent and they likely fought in the resistance movement in some capacity. It is a shame Rinoa was not aware on some level about her sorceress' heritage, all along, and thus needed to fight Edea controlled by Ultimecia. Was Rinoa's resistance fighting just an immature defiance of her father, the General of Deling City? I think the creators intended Rinoa-Seifer to be an un-romantic precursor to Squall-Rinoa and of course a continuation of Cid and Edea. Yes, Ultimecia could be Rinoa and Squall's descendant. This opens yet another time paradox. No Ellone dreams, no Squall coming to Esthar with Rinoa to find his Big Sis', no Ultimecia being born many generations in the future. Maybe, Ellone was connecting with Squall so he could then save Rinoa in outer space and thus, in time Ultimecia could be born?

Fantastic video with lots of great points, perhaps the best argument for the R=U I’ve heard. When I first discovered that theory a few years ago my mind was blown as everything finally made sense. All of Squall’s weird philosophy, the dialogue, the opening (which is a first glimpse at Ultimecia’s perspective. She doesn’t know why or what, but she knows she has to) the lack of Ultimecia’s development and motive, etc.-it all made sense. I was like Chazz Palminteri at the end of Usual Suspects. I promise that will eventually replay the game with that theory in mind and find more clues. Yeah, SE and Ultimania deny it, blah blah, I heard it. But if Ultimecia is from the future, who remains to be the last sorceress at the end of the game? And if sorceresses live normal lives, how come they can’t die till passing powers? What are they crones forever? Adel is like a thousand years old, why can’t have Rinoa frozen herself or something? Also, Ultimecia is not fully human. Maybe her junction with Griever caused her to have those claws and prolonged her life? But you already covered that. Let me bring up another thing you didn’t mention if I may. Ultimecia is also known as Artemisia, correct? Well Artemisia II was a famous historical figure known for “her extraordinary grief at the death of her husband. She is said to have mixed his ashes in her daily drink, and to have gradually pined away during the two years that she survived him.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemisia_II_of_Caria I believe that clues are strewn throughout the game. Like the statues in the ballroom when Rinoa meets squall look like Ultimecia’s final form, or the carpet in Rinoa’s room resembles the Ultiimecia’s castle with multiple chains. That one may be a little farfetched through, but I’ll have to play again to see it for myself.

First, I would like to say it's a nice video! Good work! While there a few flaw on what you explain. Let me correct the course :) She's not as far as people think in the future! A surprising misunderstanding of a basic word used in the game. In the game it is said Ultimecia is several !!generation!! in the future. Not several lifetime! Not several hundred years! Not far in the future! What is a generation ? It's about 17-20 years... What make her forget so much ? The GF is not in Squall, it's in the ring! the GF possibly lost by Selphie when she was 12.(That is another story) She never give back Squall ring and clearly talk about his dream: From script: Squall: "No, it's because of the GF. That's why I forgot." Rinoa: "That's just an excuse." Squall: "Feeling better?" Rinoa: "Yeah. Can I tell you a story? I had a dream. It was a scary dream. We make a promise. We promise to see shooting stars together. I get dressed up an put on your ring. But the thing is, I can't remember where I'm supposed to meet you. I start to panic. I really want to see you, Squall, but I don't know where to go.{...} The ring IS the GF. It is Griever. Thats how the ring is called and is why she forget! She keep equiping the GF to her finger. The whole basketball scene is to set up the fact that GF memory is erased, to explain how Selphie had a GF and lost it.(Griever) FF are strong on the themes they make. FF8 theme is love! This is why Ultimecia giving her power to Edea create an infinite loop of love. As if the time is in a way compressed between their birth and the end. Because Squall and Rinoa are the love that Julia and Laguna never could consume. Raine + Laguna* = Rain on a lagoon is called a Squall. Julia + Caraway = Rinoa *Spanish

Final Fantasy VIII... no matter how you look at it, one of the greatest stories never told. That sums up my critique of VIII - there is a massive story that isn't told in favor of ... stuff that doesn't make any sense until I remembered that "Interactive Movies" were a very popular idea. I like the idea that Rinoa and Ultimecia share more than simply being a sorceress. It explains a few of the design decisions without invoking the 'dream' argument and adds a level of depth. Frankly, I first interpreted Ultimecia as a boss for the sake of a boss. I thought the plot could have been far more coherent if we left it at the big bad witch in space. Ultimecia just seemed like something added to compare to Kefka or Sephiroth in terms of overwhelming power. I would argue for the interpretation that the story of Final Fantasy VIII represents, among its other stories (Squall and Rinoa being the children of a couple who were separated before they could have the love they felt for each other - a very japanese theme of trans-generational love), the idea that the possibility of Rinoa becoming Ultimecia is resolved through the conflict. For reality-manipulating sorceresses, I don't really find much issue with Rinoa surviving into the distant future. Traveling forward in time is an easy task - they cryo-store people to launch them into space in this installment - simply pull a Futurama and we have a potential for Rinoa going bonkers centuries later. Here, we can say that Rinoa becomes her own free person and that time compression resolves the paradox by eliminating the future in which she has become Ultimecia. Since we are dealing with such a purely fantastic concept as time compression... it's hard to say what is or isn't a reasonable explanation involving it. We could also play a bit more fast and loose and suggest that Ultimecia is an artifact of time compression, itself. This would allow Ultimecia to be Rinoa as she would be if Squall died during the assassination attempt while being aware of what would have been if he weren't. Though that is probably way more brain-busting than Square was going for. I would love to see a remake of VIII - it is most in need of it. I believe a lot of the game was lost to internal competition between whether it was a game or an interactive movie. It was also stretching the limits of storage media of the time, and that also contributed to what seem like a number of last-minute ommissions of story telling to be replaced by awkward exposition dumps. There is a great story under there (hidden in what would be codex entries today) that isn't really told, and there is potentially far more reason to the madness to be told. Square-Enix's fixation on action-RPGs would probably work better with the atmosphere of VIII, as well. VIII seemed to be designed to be action-centric, so it would be a little more natural to transition to the hacky-slashy stuff. Still... my most memorable part of the game was when Rinoa first used "Wishing Star" - I laughed for a solid ten minutes. That boss had given me so much trouble... and she one-shot it by riding a dog through space. It was not at all what I was expecting out of her limit break. Humor aside... probably the most compelling thing is the opening scene where the dialogue is about Rinoa waiting for someone (Squall, it seems) - with Ultimecia sitting in a tower anchored to the daycare. This is a very deliberate choice by the team and it echoes to the intro that is supposed to pique our interest in the game. We can accept that this was the place that connected all of the characters and therefor serves as a mutual anchor for an entry point into a realm of twisted reality... but the story doesn't make clear if the castle is built atop the daycare... or the daycare is a sort of bridge constructed by the memories of the characters. That ... or we are left with the 'wish-fulfilling dream' theory. But that is an exploration of nihilism that can apply to any implied existence - even ours at this moment. Without more overt existential themes, I am not all that compelled to such 'squall is dead theories'. All said - I appreciate this explanation/theory/discussion.

Thanks a lot for the very insightful comment. You raise some points that I never thought of. Final fantasy VIII will always be my favorite game no matter what. I agree that it is one of the greatest stories ever told regardless of how you approach it. I think the same dev team of FF8 also worked on FFX and that game, in my opinion. is likewise example of an interactive movie albeit more so than FF8. I often think that maybe that’s the kind of direction they were trying to go with FF8 and like you said with the limits of the time they just couldn’t do it. I’ve never looked at the story from the perspective of it being a kind of Japanese Romeo and Juliet, or an amalgamation of modernized eastern fairy tales. It’s reminding me of Kurosawas Throne of Blood. It’s one of those things that’s so obvious but you don’t see it till it’s right in front of you. I’ve always looked the FF8 concept of time much like it was in Back to the Future, where time has strict rules and if you defy those rules the consequences could be disastrous. That is only one theory of how time could work of course. Thinking of time compression as an open concept instead of a rigid A to Z notion adds something new to the theory for me. Your idea that Squall dying during the assassination attempt and his death at that point being a catalyst for Rinoas transformation is very intriguing. I honestly wasn’t a big fan of the Squall is dead premise because I thought it stripped away a lot of the games meaning by having most of it occur in a moment of death scenario and I totally concur that without existential themes this theory is meaningless. But fitting in R=U the way you did makes the idea much more appealing. I would also love to see a remake of some kind. Having it be episodic like they’re planning with the FF7 remake would work very well for FF8. I think having FF8 be an action-RPG would be a perfect choice. You predominately play as members of an elite military force and often find yourself in apt scenarios befitting of such a group, so having it be action oriented just makes sense and when the story needs to take over for a while, it can without such a jarring effect. FF7 always gets so much attention and while I also like that game a great deal, I think it’s time for FF8 to get some overdue attention. There’s so much untapped potential and it’s a shame that it pretty much lays dormant. Rinoas limit breaks are awesome lol. Using her own pet as an arm cannon was great. The opening cinematic definitely set the tone well and fully immersed me into the world. Even before I got a chance to do anything in the game I was hooked. The promise quote was very compelling and it always makes me think of a possible connection between Rinoa and Ultimecia. The orphanage is certainly the central hub of everything that is important in the story. It’s very true that there is no decisive proof at all that Ultimecias castle is directly on top of the orphanage. This is pure speculation. In the game when you enter time compression after the fight with Adel and brief journey through time, your steps towards Ultimecias castle start at the orphanage. The chains begin there. That’s really the only evidence to suggest a close proximity between the orphanage and the castle. Thanks again for taking the time to write such an in depth assessment of the theory and for taking the time to watch the video. I very much appreciate it. Please subscribe if you like. I plan on doing more Final Fantasy VIII analysis videos in the future. If there are any particular FF8 related topics you want to see discussed just leave a comment and I’ll do my best.

楽 楽 A remake (or should say reboot) is pointless now, Kitase seemed more interested in applying the SiD theory. So Ultimecia is Ellone, or a descendant then? To be honest, it just seems like he don't want to do it anyway. SiD theory basically destroys the game: Everything was bullshit, Edea becomes a one-dimensional villian, Seifer remains a slave, Ultimecia and Laguna are irrelevant now and everyone at Balamb and Trabia dies at one point and don't get character development? So this is like Eternal Sonata then? Yeah, everybody hated it besides the mechanics. Just for the sake of satisfying some hipsters? Nah.

While I do enjoy this theory, I've always thought alot of the similarities/parallels were to show how different they are characteristically through visuals. Much like Squalls and Seifers scars. Personally though, I always thought of Ultimecia as a possible descendant of Squall/Rinoa, or that someone continued the orphanage and Ulti was a child there. If I remember right, her future is generations later not centuries, so her time period isnt necessarily so far off from Squalls. Regarding the Griever theories, didnt Ultimecia create Griever during the battle? I dont remember her having it prior to that. It was my understanding she manifested it then off of Squalls fears or something.

my plot was in the Ultimecia free timeline, war still happened. There will be a time when Squall will die and Ellone will need to pass her powers to rinoa. Rinoa loves squall so much along with their friends that she wishes to relive their time together. But going back in time through consciousness wasn't enough so she tried and tried. then, after some time, having the powers of Edea, Adel and Ellone, including her own, Rinoa becomes... unstable mentally and emotionally. Then her mind shatters. only remembering seed, time... wait at the orphanage... thus she starts looking like the combined aesthetics of all sorceres she had her powers from. Then, she was able to go to the past but during squall's childhood. She saw Edea/Matron, knowing at the back of her mind she is important, Ultimesia passed her powers and consciousness to edea. Then, the game's timeline begins.

Squall dies at the end of disc 1 That happened a long time ago. Rinoa is ultimecia. Everything in the game all the characters and places are an illusion created by rinoa-ultimecia She compresses and rewinds time for the sole purpose of living the same life and experiences with squall. Griever is squall. The only two characters of FF VIII are squall and rinoa/ultimecia hence the cover of the game. The rest are only memories of the people they met before the death of squall at the end of cd1. Plot-wise is the best final Fantasy and one of the best plots I've ever came across till now. Because it reinterpretes the trope of the star crossed lovers in a exclusive way. An immense masterpiece.

All the interesting events of this theory are the things that would have happened to Rinoa in the timeline after Ultimecia is defeated and before Ultimecia's rise to power in the future. To me, the biggest clue that they could be the same is that in the future, Ultimecia parks her castle right at the exact spot that Rinoa tells Squall to meet each other at, the field of flowers. If this was not intentional at all then it was a gigantic coincidence. One then must ask how does Ultimecia know of this promise between Squall and Rinoa? And what was her intention to park her location in that exact spot? Did she have some vague memory of knowing something important was supposed to arrive in that location?

People should stop to read stories libearly. Its obvious tgat the time compression is the key to all the plots and subplots. Laguna/squall julia/rinia couldnt live together so the only chance they had to erernalize their love was through a never-ending cycle and loop in time. This connection slowky builds... all characters are one since time comoression happens, this is way everybody grew together "coincidentally"

What if it turns out that ultimecia is the daughter of Rinoa and Squall? Like Squall who is always disturbed by the existence of Laguna. In the end everything is just a time loop that can stop if Rinoa and Squall are not together.

It was a daring theory but i recently played ff8 again and I came to realise something a lot of people missed and that makes that theory unecessary to the plot: The tragedy of seifer. Seifer dreams to be a sorceress knight, it's his life goal, he wants to be a knight and a hero and he could have been. He dated rinoa prior to the game and up to the point of the tv station incident he could have still joined the party, be rinoa's boyfriend and eventually become his knight when she becomes a sorceress but instead he chose the wrong path and followed ultimecia thinking he was pursuiing his dream. He unkowingly becomes a vllain and abandon what could have been his destiny, leaving the place empty for his rival squall to take. Squall reaches every goal Seifer had without even wanting it. All he wants is to live the life of a mercanary, make money, live at garden and that nmobody ask him anything but he gets dragged into becomming Rinoa's knight and defeat both seifer and ultimecia, thus being a legendary seed and world saviour. This is the true plot of FF8, a simply story that is told in the intro video as they both fight under the phantom sight of ultimecia (As Edea) while Rinoa waits in the field for her knight. Once you take this plot element into account, you realise Ultimecia has received enough buil up through the game. She is never seen in person until the final battle (and a flashback) but you see her as a horribly evil character as she drags seifer into his fall, manipulate a whole superpower into global war, commits a genocide against trabia and attempts one against balamb, the list goes on. She's an archetypal villain who puts her own existence above others, wants to reach god-like powers even if it means the end of the world as we know it. Rinoa is in fact her perfect opposite and she is presented as such (they have opposite colored hair, wings and clothes) so the whole story is Rinoa and Squall vs Seifer and Ultimecia. That's why it becomes unecessary to farfetch plot element to imagine Rinoa is Ultimecia. The final point is, that Ultimecia is defeated in a state of time compression, her final form is absorbing everything time and space and she is defeated from time and space so one can imagine that her future actions will never happen. Finaly, a little personal theory: many people complained that you never get to see the ellone junction machine but I came to wonder if the greek looking portals that gives you access to the world map wouldn't be the time travelling device she uses.
@fraserstewart6035
@fraserstewart6035 7 жыл бұрын
Consider this. Ultimecia intentionally passes on the powers that she gave to Edea/Matron onto Rinoa in order to preserve her own existence. Because without Rinoa becoming a sorceress, Ultimecia can't exist in the future, as she is in fact Rinoa. By giving RInoa the powers of the sorceress, this gives Rinoa unnaturally long life, this causes her to live through many generations in a world that frowns down on soceresses, it also means that she has to live through the pain of loss. She is doomed to witness the death of Squall and all of her friends while she continues to live on. This causes her to resent time itself which leads her to come up with the idea of time compression. When you fight ultimecia in the final battle, she it able to summon the lion Griever. But the only 2 people who know about Griever are Squall and Rinoa. Griever is the name that Squall gives to the lion on his ring and he only ever tells Rinoa about this. It's very possible that Griever is the manifestation of Squall from the future, who's spirit lives on as a GF who serves to protect ultimecia. Which would make sense, considering the promise that Squall makes to Rinoa about being her knight and protecting her, no matter what. When Ultimecia is defeated, she travels into the past and passes her powers on to Matron/Edea, as she can't die without surrendering her powers first (which adds credit to the theory that sorceresses have unnaturally long life spans). Of course the powers that she passes on to Matron/Edea, will ultimately get passed on to Rinoa, when Ultimecia takes over Matron/Edea's body (as we see at the end of disc 2). Even although Rinoa looks happy at the end of the game when you see her smiling back towards Squall, it doesn't change the fact that she is still a sorceress who is doomed to witness the death of Squall and all of her friends one by one, as she continues to live on throughout generations, which of course, ultimately leads to her becoming Ultimecia in the first place. It's all very timey wimey..... but the puzzle fits perfectly if you think about it.

Unfortunately I don't think you bring anything new to what has already been speculated for years. At the end of the day I have nothing against this theory and it has a lot of bright argument. And any fan can consider whatever he wants cannon if that fits his desires, that's what is beautiful about a piece of fiction BUT i don't think rinoa = ultimecia is officially cannon. And I don't like this avid need for crazy plot twists fans have found, sometimes it's also nice to have a good old villain that is just a villain and noot a hidden former relative/best friend/ child. The griever argument is not valid, as ultimecia states she creates a monster from their fear. The tone of the text heavily implies she does that on the moment by connecting her "monster creation spell" to squall's subconcious or something like that rather than rinoa remembering the griever ring. If she could remember griever and its connexion to squall, she could remember squall herself but she dosen't. She openly states they are meeting for the first time as she seems satisfied to meet the legendary seed.
@fraserstewart6035
@fraserstewart6035 7 жыл бұрын
We don't know how long Ultimecia has had the ability to summon Griever. If she is from many generations into the future, then Squall will have long been dead and will have long given up his soul in order to mold a GF in his image. If Ultimecia has summoned Griever a lot (perhaps to defeat other seeds), then it's possible that the long term use of Griever, causes her to forget about Squall and everybody else from her past. But she'll still remember Griever as a powerful GF, as she summons him commonly throughout time to defeat all who oppose her. The problem with suggesting that Ultimecia isn't Rinoa and just some random end boss who is thrown in for the sake of it, makes the pieces of the story not fit together. But the arguement that Ultimecia is in fact the future manifestation of Rinoa, fits all of the pieces together. Why would Ultimecia randomly decide to pass on her powers from Edea to Rinoa? She would have had absolutely no reason to do this, unless it was some requirement in the past in order for her to exist in the future. Remember, Ultimecia surrenders her own powers to Edea, which then get passed on to Rinoa about a decade later. This means Rinoa obtains all of the powers of Ultimecia. If Rinoa isn't Ultimecia, then how does Ultimecia come to be in the future and where does she get her powers from? If she isn't Rinoa, then her existence has absolutely no explaination whatsoever and we as the gamer are just supposed to except that she exists with no back story or explaination at all.

the ff8 lore never mentionned gf being people. They seem to be deities from ancient time suggested by the tomb of the unkown king or odin's presence in centra which is exactly the kind of approach i dislike in fan theories. It is implied griever [the boss creature] gets created during the boss battle with ultimecia and she junctions him for the 3 battle. Ultimecia is the anti thesis of Hyne the creator of mankind, she wants to destroy mankind and gets hyne power within herself, that's enough motive. She passes her power to rinoa cause she has lost her grip on edea and rinoa happens to be here (she is the only female who is required to be here, the 3rd character of this battle is up to the player) and she needs her to give her next order to seifer. Beside rinoa is ini the party that is opposing ultimecia's plan from deling city and the love interest of both seifer and squall, what's better than that for a perfect tool of manipulation. As i have already mentionned, this fan theory is nice and everything but it is far fetched and simply serves to resolve some t hings players felt was a plothole in contrast to the very developped sephiroth. I enjoyed facing a shadow threat from another dimension, not knowinig what my ennemy looked like until the very end. it gives a certain aura to ultimecia that the rinoa theory ruins for me. You are totaly free to accept this theory though but I have read through it for years and for years I considered it cannon until I recently played the game again and i figured out it was unnecessary. 0

Well in a way, Squall is from ancient times in Ultimecias future world. I don't think it's too far fetched to believe that his spirit somehow became a guardian force. It could be that when Rinoa witnesses Squalls death (however way he eventually dies) she uses her powers of sorcery to save Squall soul in the image of his lion. Another thing to consider is the name of the track that plays when Ultimecia junctions herself to griever. The track called "Maybe i'm a Lion?". I believe this is Squall questioning whether the lion he's fighting is actually his future self protecting Ultimecia? Anyway, you're entitled to your own views of course. I just think there are far too many coincidences for Ultimecia not to be Rinoa.

@xDreadEmpirEx
@xDreadEmpirEx 7 жыл бұрын
I think the Squall is dead theory interesting to ponder, but not as meaningful as Rinoa is Ultimecia. If Squall dies at the end of disc one then I think it greatly diminishes his character. He remains the stoic introvert that we meet at the start of the game and never actually becomes the friend, leader, warrior that he turns into at the end of the game. Everything from the beginning of disc two and on is all stuff that happens in the moment Squall fades. He's reflecting on his life and imagining all the things he'd like to change if given the chance. Squall is dead strips the game of much of the existential themes that transpire throughout the story. I don't think it serves the story well like Rinoa is Ultimecia does. Thanks very much for watching :)

What about the theory that Squall actually dies out in space? We see a clip at the end of the game where Squalls space suit face screen smashes open causing his chain to float up into the air. Is it possible that this occured in an alternate time line? Perhaps it occured in the time line that ultimecia lived through. Which resulted in Rinoa returning to Earth by herself and being frozen by those Esthar scientists. But with no Squall to rescue her? Perhaps that Rinoa remains frozen for hundreds, perhaps even thousands of years. Then she somehow breaks free, realizes that everybody she ever cared about is now gone, which leads to her taking the form of ultimecia?

It's all up to you after zat. As you can clearly see in this and hopefully remember ingame, they do go in time compression without stopping existing. @@VirginMary1.0 Weren't they only able to go into the time compressed world because of Ellone? We don't see another living soul that can see what is going on during that segment. There are no "present" versions of other characters who are confused about what's going on, only our characters that were sent by Ellone are able to traverse through time and not get stuck. Edea was very clearly just a past version of herself, unaware of what was going on. If we saw someone acknowledge what was happening with time during that segment, I'd believe you have an argument. But as it stand, only people who use the Ellone machine (Ultimicia) and people who were sent back by Ellone herself are able to understand what's happening.

Yes but thats not life. Some lives are tragedies. And thats where people learn more about themselves when observing a story like this theory being placed in ff8. It adds more to the story that it becomes myth instead of a happily ever after fairytail. The notion that things must come to an end is something that people all through time have tried to grasp. People are scared to see such things. And that right there leads to a lot of destruction that in turn explains human nature to the core. The evil incarntion that oneself can manifesf in this world. The dangers of such things but a sad one too.

Aka Rhinoa gets too powerful (still last boos fight with squall) however, Final FMV shows Squall die from...meh a larger ice spear lolol...Rhona pauses... Freaks out and goes insane X2: gathers Squalls body, scream and takes on Ultimaecia's form: and then disappears into the future...to begin building her machine: She'll use to "save Squall"...and herself. Yeah I always figured the pronunciation was like you put it, "eh-loan," because I thought they chose that character's name based on one of the main themes of the story: Loneliness/Isolation vs. Friendship/Belonging. Hence "alone" --> Ellone

There is actually a major plot hole in the main line story here to. There is only supposed to be one sorceress at a time in existence.
@Caught1nTh3Crossfire
@Caught1nTh3Crossfire 3 жыл бұрын
No plothole - Adel was the current time periods sorceress most of the game but imprisoned, whereas Edea got her power from a dying Ultimecia from the future, followed by Rinoa getting those from Edea. Adel was the only sorceress that existed in that time originally.

what about the fact of Seifer being ultimecia's "knight"? it seems as if he knew she was rinoa... i mean they knew each other, he had this romantic dream of being... somenone's knight or something like that... and there doesnt seems to be another reason for him to help ultimecia... maybe he just felt who she was at an unconscious level? it adds to the idea of rinoa having two different men fighting for her...

Martin Perez Rojas Seifer wanting to be a knight has nothing to do with Rinoa. She doesn't even become a sorceress until halfway through the game, so I find it unlikely that he recognized her. None of the other characters do. Ultimecia wanted Seifer to be her knight because he is strong and she wanted to take advantage of that and use him, and Seifer wanted to be Ultimecia's knight because he saw a movie about a sorceress and her knight (the one Laguna acted in), and began idolizing the character. You can also see that in the way he fights. In the movie Laguna was using a gunblade and held it exactly the same way Seifer always does. Seifer idolizes the knight character so much that he copied his fighting style.

Speaking of Rinoa why would she be Ultimecia
@fraserstewart6035
@fraserstewart6035 7 жыл бұрын
Because assuming that having the powers of a sorceress causes that person to have an unnatural life span, Rinoa is effectively doomed to live through the death of Squall and all of the people close to her. Suffering all that pain and being doomed to wander a world that resents sorceresses causes her heart to become bitter and filled with hate and resentment. She begins to hate time itself, so comes up with a plan to compress time in order to stop it from moving any further forward. Of course by compressing time together, this opens up a gateway for (still living) Squall to enter her world. But by this point, she no longer remembers who Squall is. Generations of using the powers of the GF have rotted her mind. She doesn't even remember who Griever represents (future Squalls soul living on as her protector) but she still uses Griever for the power that it gives her. When Ultimecias final form is about to be defeated, she talks about trying to remember memories from her childhood, memories that she has long forgotten. In the end, she does manage to remember and is finally able to accept death by surrendering her powers to Edea. (Who of course passes those powers on to Rinoa, which restarts the cycle)

@@fraserstewart6035 Eh, far too many assumptions about not only what would happen but how Rinoa would react. I'd hope the time she spent with her friends would have been enough for her, that she would have been able to find meaning in life without them. There have been good sorceresses in FF8 who didn't lose their mind from having an extended lifespan, Rinoa could have simply be one of them. With all the learning and growing she does in the story, I just can't see her going insane because her friends are gone. She has decades to accept this fact before her friends ends come (if it's even true. Again, this entire theory relies on assuming the sorceresses have extended lifespans). I just can't picture it. I can't picture a world where everyone knows shes the sorceress, everyone knows she's gonna outlive them (again, only if that is true) and no one does anything to try and prepare her for it emotionally. It feels like something her friends would desperately try to make her feel at peace about, especially Squall. I just can't believe there is a world where, after FF8s events, no one talks to Rinoa about her apparent immortality and helps her come to grips with it. It makes no sense to me, her friends would do everything they can to ensure she's at peace and is able to find meaning after they're gone. The whole game punches into us that these people love each other and would do anything for each other. I just cannot accept that they all wouldn't reach out to her and help her deal with the intense feeling of outliving everyone you love. Could you even imagine that? Squall just never talking to Rinoa about it, silently accepting this would happen? It would absolutely destroy his character and all of his growth. Honestly, if it's true, it makes the story worse imo. It would mean that her friends miserably failed her, that no one tried to comfort her or talk to her. That's just not who our party members were, and if they suddenly were written that way, Id start to wonder what the point of including friendship as a central theme was, since it would be made ultimately unimportant if this theory was true. Before someone hits me with the "GFs make you forget things" Selphie started making everyone write down what was happening in their own journals so they wouldn't forget things. I can see Rinoa doing this for as long as she lives, fondly remembering them. I can't see her throwing out the journal for no reason other than she has to forget her friends. Also, I know this is five years later, but hey, this games fun to talk about no matter what year it is lmao

I should point out that Ultimecia made multiple attempts on Rinoa's life during the course of the game's plot. I highly doubt Ultimecia would ever be stupid enough to attempt something that effectively amount to *retroactive suicide,* considering the fact that she already had a sinister plot to live for. That's why I think Rinoa is NOT Ultimecia.

@@burnzie743 well, if that were the case, couldn't she have used that same toy she used to possess Edea, Rinoa, and Adel to move closer to her present and figure out on her own whether or not she used to be Rinoa? @@dionr1168 If that were her goal, maybe. But it wasn't, and she doesn't know what she doesn't know. Often times if you're not explicitly looking for something, crucial details and clues can fly over your head, even if you're staring at them. You don't really stare at them, but past them. None of the other characters affected by the GF knew they lost any memories on their own; they had to be guided by someone else whom was unaffected. I see no reason why this would be any different for Ultimecia. Couple that with her having the GF junctioned for at least double or triple the amount of time, and not having anyone (like her knight, Squall) to keep her grounded and in check, and there you have it.
