Whilst side-scrolling beat-em ups existed prior to Final Fight, it was Capcom's seminal side-scroller that really perfected the template and set the standard for genre. Boasting super-smooth scrolling, brilliant graphics and a fighting system that was super-easy to pick up and play, Final Fight was the mainstay of any decent arcade in the late 80's and early 90's.
Capcom ported the game to the SNES in 1990, but it lacked much of what made the arcade version so great. Not only did it lack a 2-player mode, Guy was absent from the game altogether, as was the entirety of the fourth level. Needless to say, many players felt that Capcom could have handled the conversion a lot better.
Capcom would later release a version of the game for Sega's CD add-on for the popular Mega Drive/Genesis platform in 1993. Boasting a full CD soundtrack, I thought it would be interesting to play through this version of the game and see how it compares to the arcade, as well as the lacklustre SNES conversion.
The most significant upgrade that the CD format brings to the table is the fully mastered CD soundtrack and, I have to say, it's seriously impressive. Not only has all of the in-game music been recreated to a high standard with proper instruments and synths, Capcom also recorded voice-overs for the intro and ending sequences; it's pretty cheesy (as you'd probably expect for early 90's), but it's still a cool feature given that FM synthesis and scratchy speech samples were still the norm for console games at the time.
On the subject of the intro, I noticed that there are a couple of new scenes added to this version not present in the original arcade version; I'm unsure as to whether these are exclusive to this port or whether it's present on other conversions, but it's a small, if neat addition.
In addition to the Red Book CD soundtrack, all of the digitised effects samples from the original arcade board feature in this version as well, and they sound excellent. I don't have any information to hand, but I suspect that Capcom made use of the Ricoh PCM chip in the Sega CD unit to play these samples; the quality is far too good to be using the base console's sound chip.
Of course, fancy graphics and audio would be for nought if the gameplay wasn't any good. As you might expect from Capcom, the game plays just as well as the arcade version - everything from the controls to the fighting action feels absolutely spot-on; some of the enemy AI behaviour felt slightly different to that of the arcade, but this is just an observation, not a complaint.
The game features excellent graphics and include all of the animation from the arcade version; watch Guy's walking animation and it appears to be just as fluid and features as many frames as the arcade.
If I have one complaint, it's that the colours of most of the sprites have been altered to accommodate the console's hardware; the end result is the game looks a little washed-out compared to other editions with many of the characters featuring a slightly sepia hue.
In fact, Capcom have put a lot more work into conversion than you might first realise - in a side-by-side comparison it's evident that Capcom has actually redrawn all of the artwork and sprite assets to fit the console's screen resolution/aspect ratio (which is different to the arcade). The comparison also reveals other differences, such as the way the scrolling backdrop from the elevator section during round 4 is completely absent in the CD version.
Comparisons aside, there's no denying that this is an absolutely brilliant port of Final Fight, arguably better in every department when compared to the SNES version (and subsequent sequels). If you want as near-perfect a conversion for a home system (excluding the Sharp X68000), this is definitely the version to go for.

This doesn't reply to the question, nowhere to tell us which mode was it. I play it dozen of times and we die playing 2 players always at the Katana guy or after the 3 Andores guy, we play normal mode. In your video, the Katana guy didn't move a pixel and you beat it easily. Your description is too long and doesn't answer to my question. So enjoy your negative review.

The best scrolling brawler for any SEGA 16-Bit system, along with Streets of Rage 2. If you had those two games, you didn't need any more team-up fighters (well, except for Golden Axe II). A technological marvel for the system, it blows any SNES version of Final Fight (even 3) out of the water, because of its gameplay, two player capability, full roster of characters and much less censorship. The faster gameplay and smooth scrolling also puts this game above all the competition
@Bloodreign1

Has nothing to do with CD. He was talking of 2-player-mode, full set of playable characters and stuff like no censorship or little on the girls. But if you want, watch Streets of Rage 2 on cartridge: 2-player-mode, 4 characters and Streets of Rage 3 has besides at least 2 hidden characters. Japanese version has 3 hidden characters I think.

Well many versions of this game were released, but this particular one had to stay Sega CD exclusive though. It was an amazing port for it's time, and far superior to the badly butchered Super N.E.S. one, which was horrid compared to the arcade too.

I had a sega cd and liked the arcade version of final fight, but I swear that the sega cd version had poor distribution or a limited production run because I never saw it for sale or rent anywhere, not even at secondhand stores or at garage sales (and I didn't know anyone who had a copy). It must have been on the shelves for like 6 months and all the copies were sold quickly and the owners never sold or gave them away. On the other hand, many other Sega CD games aren't hard to come by.

And I figure that rental copies were probably stolen by people who desperately wanted the game.

I heard this was intended to be a Mega Drive game without the CD add-on before Sega had created Streets of Rage as a take on this game.

Both SOR and Final Fight released in 1989. SOR hit consoles first and Final Fight followed. The SNES and Geneses version of Final Fight didn't release until 1991. You really can't compare them until Final Fight was ported to console. I had a lot more fun when I was able to finally play Final Fight on console. I picked up the Sega CD version and haven't looked back.

@@ResidentNotEvil5 It always kills me how these types of videos bring out so many Trolls like you. If another beat them up game besides Streets Of Rage gets talked about you Troll fuckers get so butt hurt. I've said Street's Of Rage was good. This is still my favorite. This isn't even a comparison video. It's like all you Trolls do is put down your fake pocket pussys and storm out of your moms basement to lash out at any thought of someone playing a game you don't like. This is not a comparison it is a play through. So I will end this by letting you know I could give 2 shits about your opinions. You failed like a typical Troll and I don't give a shit if you find the Streets Of Rage games good.. Since you want to keep going way of topic how about you make a video of Final Fight CD and compare it to Streets Of Rage Series? Put it on KZfaq and do a breakdown. You would literally be a real example of a Caveman trying to play and explain video games.
