Shaun Meehan No, it’s not edited for time. Jeopardy films three episodes back to back, twice a day in the morning and afternoon for a total of six episodes per day, with enough time in between for Alex and the ‘previous’ winner to change clothing (on set). Every episode is produced ready for broadcast with intro, commercial wait time and credits included in the show’s pacing right in studio.

I think the transition is intended to be quick to deviate from the participants' expectations. The crew watches what they write on the boards during Final Jeopardy and calculates their gains/losses, so they knew this was going to happen before we did.

Let's not forget that, like most other shows of its kind, the big J! used to do "play your five and see you next time" , the next time being the "tournament of champions". Now it's more of a "winner stays, loser pays" system - in other words, the first flub by the champ is the undoing rather than cutting things short at the end of a week's time. That's how we got insane s**t like Ken Jennings with his massive, $2+ Million, 74 game streak.

There was actually a game theory discussion that sometimes it's better to wager an amount where a loss causes you to tie. Part of theory was that you've already beaten your opponent. I forget the exact circumstances for it, though. Now, it's trickier and you want to not risk sudden death.
@diamonddog13
@diamonddog13 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulm3952 I was always of the mind under the previous rules that you wager for the tie rather than the $1 win for just that reason - you know you can beat one of the two opponents you'll face in the next game. So whenever somebody won by $1 I always thought it was a dick move.

@@diamonddog13 This was exactly the game strategy of Arthur Chu, and many think that the tiebreaker rule was put in place because of him. Whenever he didn’t have a lock game going into Final Jeopardy, he always bet for the tie - though only one game actually ended in a tie.

Though rare, I've seen a tie game on Jeopardy! before in which both winning contestants were declared co-champions. I remember it vividly because it seemed so unprecedented. This "sudden death" tie-breaker reflects a rule change. When did this change occur and why was it changed?
@traemcpherson7266
@traemcpherson7266 6 жыл бұрын
I've seen people say either 2014 or 2016 was the effective rule change. You're correct in saying that the rule used to be different. ... Personally, I think it may have to do with contestant winnings and preventing contestants from doing math to cause ties and double champions. Such math could allow contestants to collude to tie and continue to be co-champions. (People do the math all the time, you can see games where frequent watchers have identified how final scores after Double Jeopardy affect wagers for Final Jeopardy, and determine the best course of action based on scores.) See j-archive.com/ for more about what I'm talking about. Since the introduction of minimum prizes for 2nd ($2000) and 3rd place ($1000), it would be cheaper to require a single champion over co-champions. On www.jeopardy.com/jbuzz/features/a-jeopardy-tiebreaker ... they explain that the "the judges concluded that [tiebreakers were] fitting to bring that same level of competition [from Tournaments] to the regular games." ... Personally, it just seems crappy to go from the final jeopardy format back to a signaling device clue... surely there's enough time to add in an extra 60 seconds or so of game?
@robertholtz
@robertholtz 6 жыл бұрын
"Doing the math" and determining a proper wager is a big part of Final Jeopardy! and not something they will want to do away with or discourage. Quite to the contrary, these surprise endings are a big part of the drama in the action and success with the format. A player can be dominating all the way to the very end, then wager wrong or answer wrong at Final and totally change their fate. I don't see how it would benefit any player to collude with another. One thing I can say without reservation about all Jeopardy! contestants: those players want to win. Thinking as a producer for a moment, I can see the downsides of co-champions. The producers have to pay out a substantial prize to two and even three winners, not just one. GEICO became a sponsor of the final prize money. I wouldn't be surprised if capping off the possibility of multiple winners first came up when that sponsorship slot was first offered. That would create a big variable of uncertainty for sponsorships and producers don't like uncertainty. As a viewer, I like co-champions more because I like the idea that if you achieve an equal score at the end, you should walk away with equal earnings. Further, I like that the end can't just be a fluke or luck-of-the-draw. The contestants get a whole other episode to battle it out to find out who the true champion should be. If I were a contestant, I would prefer that too. That's why, while I think I understand the motivations behind the change, I liked it better as it was before the rules changed.

They do it in case they win. If you win you get $X+1, which makes it that much more likely to be higher than the others. If you lose you probably won't win anyway.

First place bet enough so that if she got it right, she would be ahead of second place by $1 if she went all in and was right. It's a very common strategy. Second place strategy is often to just go for the doubling, but not always. Moreso done when third place is a non-factor. Though the second place strategy can get a little more weird when 3rd place is competitive or in certain range relative to the other other players and can use that to influence as wager. But no, betting ____99 would be a bad strategy. If you're in first, you generally go for an amount that guarantees you the win
@diamonddog13
@diamonddog13 3 жыл бұрын
@@db9944 In this case, in which 2nd place could not be caught by 3rd place, 2nd place should have bet $0. That way if 1st place gets the question wrong you win, because 1st place has to protect their position with a wager. If 1st place gets the question right, you lose no matter what you bet. So you better put yourself in position to win if 1st place is wrong.

Why change the rules for tie?
@my3dviews
@my3dviews 6 жыл бұрын
To prevent people from intentionally betting for ties allowing both (or all three) to stay on. You could in theory, have three contestants agree to always get the last question wrong if in first or second place, and bet enough so that they all end up with the score of the third contestant. Then continue this forever. Also, each time that there was a tie, they had to pay out the full amount to each player, not just the winner.

I am certain that what we see is an edited version. An educated guess (I know a little about Jeopardy) is that the show was stopped (as happens periodically), the producers huddle and then they resume. There is also a lawyer present at every broadcast. They then edited seamlessly. The show is broadcast usually weeks after it is taped.
@almostfm
@almostfm 6 жыл бұрын
Don't know about the huddling, but you're right that the shows are edited. Back in the days when they were broadcast live (at least on the East Coast), the inability to edit sometimes led to problems. Apparently on a late 50s episode of "What's My Line?", their "mystery guest" was Ted Williams, who was playing in a game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The game ran long, and he damned near didn't make it (apparently, he ended up buttoning his shirt while he was walking from the "green room" to the actual studio, and didn't have time to put on a tie before he was announced). And I've read that Judy Garland cut it closer than that. In the final episode, they announced that, in an emergency when a mystery guest couldn't make it, host John Daly would have been the mystery guest (which he was on that final episode)

Narm That was the second day of a two-day final in teen tournament play. Jeopardy! Tournaments have always had tiebreakers. Up until recently, in regular non-tournament play, if contestants tied, they were declared co-champions and both (or all three) returned on the following broadcast as returning champions. Co-champions are impractical in tournament play as they have an absolute end date and a fixed grand prize. This is, in fact, the first tiebreaker in regular non-tournament play.
@zerobreakgamedesign368
@zerobreakgamedesign368 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Tournament play: you need a decider. Normal play: who gives a damn? But then again, I saw where even Wheel (same distro, same creative genus, same... you get it by now) has a mechanism like this. In one game I watched awhile back, in the lightning round whrere it's "puzzle after puzzle until "ding ding, final spin" ended with a contestant matching up with another to the tune of $25K. To settle the matter, Pat and Vanna popped a toss-up worth an extra $1,000 and the win. This is the same basic idea - two-way tie (or all three), toss another category, pop the clue and whomever gets it first takes the cash and comes back. It hasn't been used like this outside of tourney play until now, but then again we didn't have "winner stays, loser pays" for all that long before Ken Jennings showed up. EDIT: I should also note that even tourney play has evolved. I saw a watch mojo once here on youtube where they did a "ten big Jeopardy! fails" and the top pick was a triple goose egg'd final in tourney play... and no winner by extension so nobody to advance forward. (Cue Gene Wilder (RIP) to reinforce the OUCH factor.) With tiebraker systems you have less of a chance to see it happen like that, but when the "triple goose egg" hit and Mr. Trebek had to break the bad news, they probably didn't have it refined to where it is now... or something to the effect. Maybe it's the positive score rule also playing a part? I know not... but in this case there actually WAS something to fight over so that made a load of difference here.
