I remember the old rules Jeopardy! used to have when it came to ties in regular games...both, or all 3 contestants if it was a 3 way tie, would be co-champions and come back for the next show. With the rules like that, the best move for someone in Andrew's position would be to bet $0, guaranteeing a return on the next show no matter what. With the rules like this, Andrew's wager was the best play. Take a chance on getting that all important $1 during final jeopardy when he has 30 seconds to think of an answer rather than give a chance for a tie-breaker where even if you know the correct answer you have to beat your opponent buzzing in.

I really can't decide between him and Mayim now. He was good right off the bat, having had so much experience with the show, but she has improved. If it weren't disconcerting to the contestants, who need to get used to the rhythm of each host, I'd be happy to see one of them do Single Jeopardy and one do Double and rotate Final. But for the reason just mentioned, that wouldn't work. The idea of one doing the daily show and one the specials is, I guess, the best compromise, as long as it isn't Mike Richards.

@KalOrtPor

I don't like it either, but too many people started making game theory bets playing for the tie and they wanted to discourage playing it safe and make things more exciting. They also wanted to free up more contestant slots and not see as many people keep coming back. But there should be a better way of settling them than that. Another Final clue probably isn't it since it could just keep going on and on, but they should have co-champions until they find a better way.

I think the optimum bet for Andrew would have been $3999, enough to beat Jeff if Jeff had bet it all and Andrew got it wrong. Because Andrew really needed either (a) Molly to either get it wrong or (b) to get it right himself, so you might as well optimize your winnings.

It was anything but a troll bet. Wager nothing and play for sudden death, or wager something and try to win the game.
@KalOrtPor
@KalOrtPor 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertlunderwood It only minimized his losses in event they were both wrong. If she was going to get it wrong though, he wouldn't have to bet anything and the worst that could happen was moving to tiebreaker. Since he did bet something, he should assume she gets it right and that if he's wrong, it's a loss since she would have bet everything to tie him. In that event losing even $1 would be tantamount to a loss so he'd need to be right in order to win, and he might as well bet nearly everything he has to maximize winning since the bet wouldn't matter if he wasn't right. This of course arises out of trying to win instead of settling for the possibility of tiebreaker.

Not a great bet by Andrew TBH. You have to assume 2nd place is betting everything, because they're ridiculous if they don't. So, you have 2 options: 1) Bet nothing, bank on 2nd being wrong, and if they're right, be willing to go to the tiebreaker. 2nd option, which is the right one, is to bet $3,999. That covers a potential double up by 3rd place if you're wrong, and gives you maximum winning potential. Betting anywhere in between is a situation when you are guaranteed 2nd no matter what, and virtually guaranteed 2nd if you're wrong, so you're literally leaving money on the table. In fact, I would argue you could make a case for literally ANY other number from 0 to 30,400 being a better wager than $1. It amazes me sometimes, because obviously he's brilliant, as are most Jeopardy champs, but some of them just don't understand game theory enough to bet appropriately.

@KalOrtPor
@KalOrtPor 2 жыл бұрын
That's why they put in the tiebreaker rule as chancing things to buzzer timing isn't as preferable to knowing you would just come back as co-champion, and there had been an uptick in the number of people playing for ties. By foregoing the tiebreaker and betting something, he opened himself up to the possibility of losing if he was wrong and she was right, so only betting $1 meant he wouldn't win more if he was right, but still lose if he was wrong. He should've bet most of what he had then, since he'd have to be right anyway to win. And if he figured she'd get it wrong, then he wouldn't have to bet anything to win and go to tiebreaker at worst. He bet to not lose much if they were both wrong.
