If Mostafa keeps getting away with cheating, he will just keep on doing it. Squash is not meant to be a physical blocking game. In the first match against Elias he actually grabbed his playing hand to interfere with Elias' shot, he should be disqualified from the tournament for doing that. I will no longer watch any match with Asal playing as he does a disservice to the sport I love so much. There are many many better Egyptian players that I love, from Farag all the way down to the Viper and beyond.

Seeing the match live it is such a shame to have someone so talented acting the way he does. Deliberately stepping into his opponents lines and also leaving the racket on purpose several times is just so sad to see. Referees has to step in and punish this behavior. Andrea probably told Asal to provide access for Elias about 20 times this match without penalizing him....

Pretty horrific tournament for the PSA. The refereeing has completely fallen off a cliff, the winners are openly flouting both the letter and the spirit of the rules and events in Egypt are rapidly becoming unwatchable due to crowd intimidation. Mark Walter needs to get to the heart of the problem ASAP or all the "marketing" in the world won't fix this.

I’ve seen people on other social media outlets saying Diego was complaining a lot, while he was people who have played squash at a high level know when your opponent is constantly blocking and impeding movement it will mess with your own movement because you may think they will block but then at last second they pull out and it looks like you gave up on ball and get no let. Asal is easily top 3 even without all the blocking but he has ruined his reputation and now only knows how to win through these tactics. I’m sure it’s a tough position for the PSA because it’s not like they are a huge sporting association like the FA or like NBA, and I’m sure they have said stuff to asal behind closed doors about the hand grabbing etc, but people will continue to be turned off by the squash he plays until he is forced to play correctly either by PSA or referees during matches. It’s clearly getting out of hand when all people talk about are his tactics rather than the squash. I used to like him when he first came on tour even though he was a bit rough around the edges but now I find myself just skipping through his matches because he’s so cringe and just hoping he loses. It’s sad and I’m afraid PSA are too small and frankly weak to actually do something about him and risk sponsors or other involvement etc.

This is a gross exaggeration. Asal was given a stroke for almost every infraction. The ones he got away with? They're balanced out by some of the harsh calls that went against him. Ironically those harsh calls are usually due to his notorious reputation with the refs. So overall Asal's choice to play the way he does affords him no tangible benefit on the scoreboard.

Actually that's a failing on their part. Its not professional for them to let themselves succumb to their own personal disappointments or dashed expectations as purists of the sport. Yes there were a lot of decisions in this match but I personally find that that aspect of the game has its own kind of drama and intrigue. A professional sports commentator knows how to keep the audience engaged in various scenarios. You don't see football commentators sulk when a match turns ugly with multiple red cards. A sporting event can be notable for unorthodox reasons.

Guys I have no clue how many comments you need to read to understand you have a major problem, for over 12 years I am writing comments for this channel, Egyptian , know a lot of the players personally since they were kids from Ramy's generation including Ramy himself, there has to be something done against this player. There has to be something major, I am beyond shocked as well of how much support he has from the younger generation and the way he dances and celebrates is pretty low standards even for a our society here in Egypt and imagine me saying this when we are in a second/third world country. The refs need to have a system just for this player alone and revise and replay their decisions with him multiple times, the crowd has zero respect and is clapping for this kind of play. Anyone who played squash like me knows very well he is massively blocking even if it is not appearing to the refs that he is and he uses one or two blocks to get into the head of the player. Diego is decent person so he cant handle this he wants a fair game, some players are even afraid to get injured when playing against him, I know mind games are a part of this sport but this is so extreme.

Wow. That may have been the worst professional match I've seen. Andrea tried to retain control, but too many empty threats. The Hammamy/Gohar final was absolutely nasty to watch too. Shame. For those of you thinking that Elias needs to work with a sport psychologist, I would wager every athlete at this level is working with a sports psychologist at some level. I don't know about any of you, but playing against Asal would be so frustrating and taxing - I actually commend Elias' behaviour towards Asal - he is redirecting to the referee, calmly talking to Asal after the match, etc. Sure, he imploded, but if I were on court during that match, I would have received a lifetime ban if you know what I mean... What is the next step? Perhaps players refuse to play against him? Clearly suspensions and fines are not working. Elias and other players have incredible movement and the games are free flowing against those players, but once Asal enters the equation it goes to hell in a handbasket. Unfortunately, other players are seeing the success that Asal is having with cheating and adopting those same techniques. Could the PSA enact stricter conduct rules? The lets and stoppages for review just make the game slower and more tedious for the audience - the exact opposite of what they are after. These new 'exciting' rules only served to inflame the already rampant problem of blocking and cheating. That was disgusting.

Asal cheats because he otherwise wouldn't win any of the big events. People saying he'd do better without, but look at when he starts blocking in matches - it's when he's behind in points or things are very close in the latter stages of games. In my mind he's likely forcing the sport as a whole to a sort of crossroads, which could go either way - turn it into something like basketball with semi-contact being the norm, or the addition of more comprehensive interference rules. It's impossible to remove grey area from the sport completely, but the rules as they stand now allow for far too much interpretation. Intentionally holding your opponent's racket, stepping into their line when it's not back to the T, hitting them with your racket after moving it opposite of backswing direction, as some examples, should be punished more severely than not providing access to the ball. Until you make the outcome on average for using dirty tactics like these negative for the offender, then they'll continue to happen.

1: PSA definitely need to do more to combat Asal’s foul play. Conduct strokes seem far too lenient for the hand grabbing stuff. 2: Elías definitely needs to do more work with a sports psychologist to improve his mental game. It could well be the case that Asal never truly gets his comeuppance and thus Elías needs to be able to deal with him without losing his head and sulking. I’m not condoning Asal’s behaviour, merely saying that it only encourages Asal more when Elías becomes petulant and sulky. But the onus should definitely be on the PSA to more heavily punish Asal’s conduct.

Rather than PowerPlays, what about adjusting the penalties? Follow the model in soccer/futbol. Still keep lesser (lose a point) and higher (lose the game) but multiple lesser penalties accumulate to a higher penalty. That allows the referee to call the lesser penalty without having to escalate to the higher one. And the players will have to behave more carefully as they get closer to the maximum number of lesser penalties. In soccer 2 yellows equal 1 red, which expels the player. In Squash it could be a different number, but same dynamics.
@ALvaroEM
@ALvaroEM 10 ай бұрын
That’s a fantastic 💡 idea; why hasn’t anyone thought of this before. Any slight contact or interference is a yellow card; a second infraction of the same level is another yellow; two yellow cards= a red. Simple! The same goes for blocking, brushing past opponents creating any interference, and leg dragging to trip opponents, as well as backing into the opponent’s line to the ball. (Give an automatic stroke and giving a warning that if this continues, the penalty would be a game conduct assigned not a point stroke…any persistence would mean the match!) Now, any rushing hits from behind /at your back, any hand grabbing, any racket grabbing, any purposely hitting with ball and racquet, as ASSal does so well, it would be an automatic match infraction due to the blatant action and severity and health repercussions of said action… and a full year ban. Causing a secondary ban after reinstating, it would be an automatic lifetime ban and permanent ejection from the sport. That being said, this should have already happened after ASSal’s recent negligent performance at 🇪🇬 CIB Now, referring should improve massively and instead of allowing any bullying by players, instead, use a tougher and improved set of rules and apply them with conviction…Even if it means a long an careful look at super slow motion video reviews to eject players from the match when players bend the rules or behave like ASSal or worse. Let’s go! Let’s keep a beautiful game BEAUTIFUL! 😃

I know it would be hard to do, and maybe even career ending, but I start to think Elias should have resigned from the match in protest, not (just) at Asal, but at the refereeing and conduct of the PSA.

The referee doesn't do Her job. After many warnings, She should have given tons of conduct strokes against Asal. Asal's behaviour is ashame but if you don't punish him, he'll continues. The show was totally spoiled by Asal. All my support to Elias

Everything else aside, that counter-drop at 3:07 was 😱 I share everyone's criticisms of Asal but he is a phenomenal talent, and the fact is Elias needs to be able to stay in these matches mentally. There are points here where he was just going through the motions. Part of being a true champion is being able to dig deep & play hard even when your opponent plays dirty. Nick Matthew probably would have lost too but he'd have fought with a snarl to the end.

the crowd whistle every time Asal won a point is enough to drive any opponent mad. I'm surprised Elias didn't spaz at all.

Painful watch in every way. These professionals train their whole lives, this is their career and livelihood not just a game. He risks jeopardising peoples lives everytime he plays. Serme was ‘lucky’ he wasn’t blinded. Each player should refuse to play him for their own sake, PSA will have to wise up in the end.

I have a Love/Hate relationship with this game, when i see the winners of this championship smiling and parading around reminds me why i don't like the sport based on the attitudes of the players and the disconnect/failing of the Squash Organisation. Maybe these cats can watch Roger Federer one day. Believe me, no one will remember those players trust me but will always remember the Ali Farag's and the Nour El Sherbini's of the world. Sad really. Well ill resume watching this sport next year and see if the Squash Organisation has stepped up at all.

Someone brought up a great idea in penalizing unruly behaviour on the squash court in one of the previous comments. I just would like to add, in enhancing it, that: That’s a fantastic 💡 idea; why hasn’t anyone thought of this before. No Olympics for Squash at all, what a dog's breakfast that was. The PSA need to clean up Asal and the referees need to enforce penalty strokes for continued interference, it's in the rules of the game.

Squash is a lot more beautiful than this. I feel very sorry for how the PSA and their referees are handling this situation and for how the degradation of this sport is being allowed. It is sad. This cannot be the example for the young players. More seriousness is urgently needed.

This is how it is when a sport (like squash in Egypt) become popular : young players imitate soccer players. But, be patient, other young players prefer MMA, that's why, in the future, matches against Asal will become and more interesting. 😀

Our team follows squash for a while now, and we have always admired the sportsmanship and respect between players. It's one of the things that drew us to this sport. However, we've noticed a change in demeanor from Mostafa Asal in his recent matches that we find troubling. Asal is undeniably a talented player with immense potential. His skill and athleticism are an asset to the sport. But, part of being a sportsman is respecting your opponents, the officials, and the spirit of the game. Unfortunately, in his recent matches, it seems that Asal has let his competitiveness cloud his judgment leading to some unacceptable behaviors on court. There have been instances of excessive celebration, obstructing the opponent's path, and some level of unsportsmanlike conduct that isn't in line with the values we admire in squash. It's vital for players to remember that while winning is important, how you win matters too. Mostafa has the potential to be one of the greats in squash, and it would be fantastic to see him channel his passion in a more constructive way. A little more grace and sportsmanship can go a long way in endearing a player to fans around the world.
