Gutted for Elias. A call like that can totally change you psychologically especially when it was at such a crucial point in the match. When a player is that sure it hit the wall I don’t see how John can say from where he’s sitting it’s not worth 10 seconds to do a check at least. PSA make sure this doesn’t happen again please.

Being a referee is really hard - you must get decision fatigue from having to make endless tough calls in a match like this. But PSA need to look at this situation and ask how they can ensure this doesn't happen again - both in terms of the end of the 4th game but also the way Asal and others are manufacturing strokes by pushing their opponents instead of letting them clear. I do think it was unfair to Diego, who should be proud of playing fair quality squash throughout.

So John is the Central Referee, were there Line Judges there too? Yes of course. Are they allowed to ask John to at least review the ball to see if it touched the front wall? Not sure how much authority they have but clearly that was a most unfortunate decision not to look at it when they have done so on many other occasions. Crappy for Elias - it certainly changed his mental state and thus the match. You also see that shameful Asal walked off court, he didn't want to see a review and be confronted with the result. Poor sportsmanship from him (again). He could have said, 'Yeah, go ahead and review it it, it was down.'

I dont agree with what you said. If you have played squash then you will not say that. In that tight position when Asal neck is below Alias arm and Elias is between Asal left ear and shoulder, what you think where Asal left hand should go? Thats a natural position of Asal hand. If Asal is pushing it then its a different story. Or if Asal is using that tactic to get the point then its wrong but I did not feel he did that for that purpose. It was just a tight situation. Either his hand can go on Alias bottom/a.s.s or on his back. What is more appropriate? Commentator also said what you said but I felt he was just biased and was behind Alias. He should have been neutral as a referee should. BTW, I also wanted Alias to win. Asal did not deserve this win "If I was Elias I would have not continued", this is not sportsmanship. I think that part of the reason squash is so under represented on the world stage is the fact that it is so contingent on having a good ref. For this specific situation, i think we can benefit from giving players one let/ stroke call review and one ball call review that forces the ref to look while also not being abusable as the player can only force the ref to look once per game. The stroke decision was weird bc that has definitely been given as a stroke many times before but I do feel he was pushed too. I would personally call it a let but I dont see that being given as a let in a professional game by a professional ref.

Ref must have been watching world cup on a different monitor or sth. I wouldn´t say this was an outright robbery, but it is pretty close. Not only do you lose the point, but it affects your mental state as well. That stroke which won Asal his first set was harsh, as he pushed Elias two steps forwards to make it seem like the interference was near the ball when it was really just a step away from the T, so on the way towards the ball. But I can see it being a stroke, so whatever. But that ball that hit the front wall is inexcusalble and THAT was the nail in the coffin. It must be very hard to play after that.

Not saying refereeing squash is easy, because it's reeally hard, but do you expect this from presionnal world ? Never. The fact this ball was not checked (independtly by the video referee, not asked by the central referee) is absolute non-sense. An other thing is Elias losing his mind once again. Very poor reffing throughout. The howler ref decision that gave game 4 to Asal was terrible, and choosing not to view the indisputable video evidence totally unacceptable. Secondly, Asal got away with pushing into Elias’ back with his hand right throughout. I thought PSA was clamping down on that behaviour, but Asal was rewarded for it over and over here by both refs. Thirdly, I don’t think the ref should speak in a way that can inflame players, as Maserela did on a couple of occasions to Elias.

I am absolutely gutted for Elias. This kind of egregious error should never happen again. I don’t understand why this can’t be reviewed by the referee. Also, if you show poor sportsmanship, then you should not deserve to win. It is hard to make every judgement during the match. The behavior on the court needs to be reviewed later and appropriately dealt with. Asal is a drag on squash and it is not fun to watch him play.

Asal's honesty and character are constantly being called into question. He is single-handedly damaging the game of squash at this level. Get this man off the court. It is unthinkable that a video check was not made on this pivotal decision. I would not have been surprised if Elias has refused to play-on, based on this shameful turn of events. This would force he PSA to rethink what they are doing. The game should be annulled and the trophy taken from Asal.

For a sport that tries to professionalize in so many ways, I can't believe a simple "the ball hit the front wall" can be missed. The entire debate that fishing for strokes is ruining the game is one thing. But pick ups that are just, I don't know, good pick ups, are now dismissed as well. Ouch. What happened throughout the game with Asal fishing for strokes (and being given them) and Elias' CLEARLY good ball at the end of the 4th game are perfect examples of (some of the) reasons why squash still isn't - and will probably never be - an Olympic sport. Could you imagine having the Olympic gold medal taken from you by arbitrary decisions on strokes and lets and a bad call by a human that simply cannot be confirmed or overturned by a video referee? Not happening. Way to go, PSA!

Both my acquaintance and the guy down in the comments claim they - and everybody around them - saw it good (both the pickup and the front wall). More importantly, they mentioned people were flabbergasted that the ref didn't even bother to check such a game-changing point.

check your referees PSA - the authority seems to have gone to their heads also, if in doubt in such a pro match, which has all the video facilities available to it, then it shouldn't really NEED a referee's decision to be checked - a simple over turn of the initial decision can be given by the video ref/tournament referee - this is just common sense

That's what undermines squash as a possible more mainstream, televised or even Olympics sports. The blatant inconsistency in refereeing (it happens in all sports, however in squash it's a norm, not an occasional exception), exacerbated by an unavoidably complicated scenarios of judgement calls due to the sheer nature of the sport. In recent years these factors are evermore favoring those who are more eager to game the rules to their advantage. Asal is an exemplifying occurrence of that, but this situation was developing across at least the last decade and PSA was always too conservative and slow to act preemptively. Now it becomes a matter of dealing with consequences, before squash loses it's integrity as a sport - which is bound to happen with stakes (e.g. money involved) going up and Asal-type players getting the edge.

It's very unfortunate for both Elias and Sherbini tonight but that's squash. Very tough indeed. However, I think PSA should introduce a new level of assistance to refereeing by ensuring that initiation of call checks are extended to video referees as opposed to the current approach where the video call checks are instigated by the centre official referee only. In other words, we may need the current approach of VAR as currently used in football for video refereeing in squash. This must not take the shine away from such an amazing and awe inspiring Men's and Women's finals!!!

Don't say it didn't hit the front wall near the end of one the games, I feel like that kind of feels like favouritism/wanting to get it over with.

I’m not sure why nobody notices, but that crucial point, Asal actually thought Diego’S pickup was a not up, so asal just starts walking to the door, you can see asal lift his hand to call it as a double bounce, while he’s walking to the door I’m not sure he’s even watching the ball hit the front wall, so if we give him benefit of the doubt that he didn’t see the front wall, either way, a good video replay would have given the point to Elias. Asal’s mistake was assuming the pick up was not good. I don’t like him but people are assuming he saw all the balls good including the front wall and that he was displaying bad sportsmanship. I actually disagree it was bad sportsmanship for this specific point, it was just really bad arrogant refereeing by JM.
