You didn't say what year your Nissan Xterra is and I'm having the same problem on a 2004 but I do understand you said you bought a distributor assembly you also said the cam sensor for a 2004 in the back so which one is it for 2004?

My Xterra is a 2000 and my distributor had a bad rotor shaft bushing that was causing my CAM signals to be off. Your CAM sensor for your 2004 is in the back of the engine. Have your CAM signals checked with a scope to eliminate that as the issue for your.

That is the power steering pressure sensor connector.

Question I just bought a 2000 Xterra was running perfect! I took it to get washed I power washed the engine bay and now it has a bad idle when I come to a stop or while it’s warming up. Any help??? Please and thank you

More than likely, you got the distributor wet and it's causing a weak spark to your spark plugs. I would remove the distributor cap and dry it out and blow dry any electrical connectors that seem moist.

That’s befen my first guess, to swap the distributor and only because after washing the engine it started to behave badly. There was some moisture in the cap and after drying it the engine performed well, but then it misbehaved, the cap was dry so I towed it home and once home the xterra started like nothing but sure a while it would misbehave. I’m about to swap the distributor, so we’ll see what happens.

Oscar, yeah you have to be careful when washing your engine and you have to cover the distributor with some form of plastic to keep it dry so you don't have issues when you start it up.

Adam, if your second gen Xterra has a distributor, then it's possible that it's in there or it may be on the outside. Okay, yeah, if you have an "04 then it's at the back of the engine.

My X starts fine in the morning I can drive it for and hour park it and start it in 30 mins or so and I get a misfire my son replaced the distributor with a non oem part and with all the misfire and catalytic converter codes I’m getting I’m thinking it’s the distributor but I get evap codes sometimes I’ve fixed so much on this thing it’s driving me crazy.

James, in order to ensure that it is the distributor, you need to put it on a scope to check the cam signals. I've had mine for almost nine years now and have had a lot of different engine codes which I've replaced a few different parts because of it. My latest is a transmission code that I haven't had the chance to chase down yet.

@@MannyFontes1968 changed to an OEM distributor and it runs much better, it stumbled 2 times and I’m thinking it’s the injectors number 3 since it’s the one that kept giving me a code.

I have a p0300 major misfire on my nissan xterra 2001. Changed the plugs, cap, rotor, wires still not working. Does rev high when I start it. Any ideas?

You may have fuel injector misfires going on and you need to find out which cylinder or cylinders are causing the random misfires. A multiple misfire can be caused by anything from faulty spark plugs to low engine compression. Because there are so many variables that could cause a misfire, the best cost savings is to take your car into a shop to have it diagnosed as quickly and accurately as possible.

@@MannyFontes1968 Did the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor no change. Initial codes were p0300 and p0325 but a cam sensor could did come up after.

@@daleravic So you got a knock sensor code which could be the result of the misfire code from your truck running rough. The P0325 code means that the Knock Sensor is not working properly. Problems with the knock sensor will not cause engine performance problems. Replacing the knock sensor usually takes care of the problem. If you got a CAM code, then it might be your distributor b/c the CAM sensor lives in the distributor. If you know someone with a scope, they can check to see if your CAM signals are off or erratic which would indicate the distributor being faulty. On mine the bushing for the distributor shaft was worn out causing my CAM signal issues.

okay so basically it runs fine for the first 5/10 mins normally when it gets hot it starts to stall , it won’t accelerate it misfires along with a dancing rpm.. it smells like gas so bad when uu first start it. i’ve replace spark plugs, distributor cap and fuel filter and it’s fixed nothing. i have a nissan frontier 2000- and they day all this started i was driving just fine and since it’s been hell

@@juve7851 It sounds like you're having a cam signal issue along with some fuel injection issues also causing the rich condition at start up. You need a good scanner that you can use to check for pending and stored engine codes and one that can show live data when it's running so you can see it the values are within specification.

Chris, it can be and for my issue it turned out to be the distributor...Other issues like bad O2 sensors, or bad fuel injectors can cause the faults you are describing.

@@Debosway77 For this type of issue, it's the CAM signals that are affected. The KS is there to detect engine knocking caused by other components running erratically.

Hey anyone got some advice for me? So long story short i have a 2001 xterra 3.3l. I never had any problems with it and then my valve covers went bad so i changed them. That same day it started misfiring. So i changed the plugs and wires still misfiring. Its starting to stall on me and my rpms are jumping. What do yall think?

Michael, if you have or someone you know who has a scanner that can give you live data, is what you need first to help you diagnose your issues because it will help to pinpoint where your problem lies. Did you mean to say that you changed your valve cover gaskets? You may have some vacuum or air leaks causing the misfire if the cover gasket is leaking. Check for oil leaking around the gasket. Don't throw anymore parts at it until you narrow down your problem.

For ignition issue problems, you can get a random misfire code like the P0300 or other codes that could lead you to changing out the distributor on this model. It seems to be a common problem for the Xterra's for this generation after so many K miles.

Ahh... I thought the fuel injector would do it but it ended up being the distributor. Thank you, good info. Was it hard to swap the distributor and keep the exact same timing?

Yeah, so did I Carry and I even changed the coil in the older distributor because it didn't measure within specs. So, the one thing that I couldn't check, the CAM sensor which is part of the distributor, turns out to be issue I was having when it got warmed up. I also found a bad bushing in the shaft of the distributor which could've added to my problem. Taking out the distributor wasn't that bad and as long as you make your reference marks are in the right locations, you should be fine with your timing when you re-install it.

It works really well and so far, knock on wood, everything is good. I still need to fix some minor issues but it's nothing serious.

I’ve been having the same issue for months up to the point of not being able to drive it. When coming to stops the rpm would drop under 500 and just stall. Did you have that problem? Took it to my Mecanic and I’m just tired of it not going anywhere. Anything helps thanks 🙏.

Juan, yes, I was having the same exact issue of when it warmed up, my RPM's would drop to 500 and below and I would have no power and then would stall out. It sounds like your CAM angle sensor is going bad and it lives in the distributor so for me, my fix was a new distributor which I found out also had a bad shaft bearing which was causing the bad CAM signals. If you watch my other videos on this truck, you will see that while chasing down this problem, I was able to find and fix other issues as well.

So far it's still doing good but I just recently got 2 codes, a P01446 and P0325 which i'm looking into to see what's causing these.

@@MannyFontes1968 Not sure if you know already, but the code for knock sensor won't set the SES light. So you probably have the code there even if the light is off. Not sure why they thought that was a good idea.

@@adamzan7 Had a 2003 frontier sit almost 4 years now starts fine cold then once warms up the entire truck start like shaking and it starts to loupe then eventually dies.I atrongly feel like now its the distributor. Doesnt thow a code only throws knock sensor which only happens after it warms up then it happens what ever it is .Once i let the truck sit 24 hours can start it right back up till it warms up again. I i defiantly don't want to pay someone when it can be just a 100$ fix.
