The next, and hopefully final, tool in my foodplot arsenal is a grain drill to convert away from tillage and fully to no-till planting for a plethora of reasons. Here is a quick review of what and why I chose this one, along with pricing. See www.tractorhouse.com/listings...

You are correct in your appraisal of my unit. I’ve been doing a lot more no till broadcast seeding and have not used it as much lately. It does a good job however when I need it.

I tried broadcast no-till seeding for a few years, too, but just had really bad germination rates. I am thinking my soils are too sandy so there is not enough moisture to get things going well (other than weeds, they do really well). Good luck with your plots this year, it's getting close to time to plant the cool season seeds!

Please keep us updated on this. I am following this closely. I was looking at the woods food plot seeder but it’s just too much $$$. I have a small tractor and the 48” version of this would be perfect for me. Even the small no till is too much weight for my tractor. I have been using a 2 row Allis Chalmers no till for beans and it works great but need something this fall for grains in the fall and buckwheat in spring.

Will do Francis. We probably need another week for the soil to warm up enough here in Michigan to be able to plant cool season seeds. But, I plan to shoot video of everything and keep you updated.

Mark I have a similar unit, a Land Pride 1560 that has worked well for me. I have the same size JD tractor, we are located in southwester WI.
@theback40
@theback40 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I was considering a 1560 too, but thought it was more of a seeder, where it slightly roughs up the ground and then drops the seed down and cultipacks it. This Tar River drill slices 10 slits in the ground and drops the seed directly in the slit, and then closes it up. Would love to see you do a video of your 1560 and post for review, will help me and lot of other guys figure out what to invest in. Maybe my impression of the unit is wrong?

Hi Matt - Thanks for the info. I am looking at the Tar River drill and wondering how if you have tried planting clover and how the coverage was because of how small the seed is. Thanks

Hey Brian, I haven't planted pure clover, yet. It has always been in a mix, and has planted very well. This spring I will be using it for pure clover planting, I can give better feedback at that time. All the best to you.

How did it all come up?! Looking at one of these. Also can you put the fertilizer in the other bin and just put out the seed and fertilizer at the same time?
@theback40
@theback40 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, thanks for asking. Still pretty cold here in Michigan so I can't say for sure how well everything germinated. I can see faint green lines, but need another week or so to give everything in the mix time to germinate. And yes, you can put fertilizer in the other bin and put them out at the same time, ONE PASS and it's all done! Just make sure you wash it out really well if you run fertilizer through, it's very corrosive. I'll try to keep putting updates out to help you decide, just super busy on other parts of life right now, ugh....

Really interested to see how this works without the no-till coulters. Like you I have sandy loam soil so your results will determine my future purchase. I no till seeded with my grain drill as well and have had fair results even though it is a single disc opener but a double disc opener drill would be 10x better.

I used it this past weekend and will be posting a video later today if it can get uploaded in time. Looks like it worked really well, but won't know for sure until I see the germination. I'll keep everyone updated on the results.

Hi Mark i love your honesty on the video I have talked to you before I am the one who had a brillion seeder in which I have sold it now i am thinking about getting the tar 507 saya it’s a little bit heavier than the tar 72 i was wondering if you have heard anything good about the 507 saya it’s also a no till and more expensive thank you for your opinion and do you think it’s worth to get a crimper
@theback40
@theback40 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Guiseppe, I know of a couple guys that have purchased the 507, but haven't used it yet. So I don't have any info to help at this time. They will be using it this spring, hopefully they will get us some feedback. As far as a crimper, I am sure it would be worth getting one, but they seem so expensive to me. I'm trying to determine if there is an effective alternative. Although I'm not a fan of using glyphosate, I am still planning to do this since I already have a sprayer, and it only costs $175 per year to spray. I'm also going to try to see if I can work with a lawn roller I already have, or add weight to the cultipacker I already have. All the best to you!

Hey Matt, GREAT question. Tar River also makes an official No-Till Drill, with the cutting coulters in front of the drill. Assuming the drill I just purchased works well (TBD), then I would say I would have purchased the Tar River No-Till Drill (SAYA 507). Much more expensive than my drill, but much less expensive than a Genesis no-till drill. BUT, I have figured out if the Good Lord lets me live another 20+ years, I will only need to plant about a grand total of 200 acres with this drill in that time. So a light duty machine is fine for me. But if I was a farmer, or had a lot more food plot acres to plant, I would wait to find a good deal on a used no-till drill. The normal farm duty equipment is WAY WAY more sturdy than this Tar River I purchased. Here's a link to their No-Till Drill www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/list/category/1122/planting-equipment-grain-drills/manufacturer/tar-river/model/saya507

Thanks Matt. How many acres are you planting each year? I bought my land 3 years ago and hope to start planting food plots beginning next year. My soil is rocky and somewhat hilly. Do you think the Tar River No-Till Drill (SAYA 507) would be a good tool for me? Also what makes it different from the one you bought?
@theback40
@theback40 3 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks for asking. I have four acres that I plant twice each year, so I am planting a total of eight acres per year. I honestly can't say how the Tar River SAYA 507 would hold up in your rocky soil. Based on what I know today, if I were you, I would probably hold out for a Genesis drill because you know they will work for sure, just check out Growing Deer TV on KZfaq, they use these drills on rocky soil. But, you have to get out your checkbook for these drills.

DO NOT turn with that drill in the ground. You won't like what happens if you do. I had one so I know. A slow curve will be ok but not sharp turns. Pick up and reposition then continue on. I went total no till last year. Sold my harrow and plows. I bought a late model trade in Great Plains 6 foot pull type. If you have trouble with your openers look into some front mounted coulters. They will cut the trash and allow the openers to more easily take the soil. If you have sandy soils you will be ok because planting depths for small grains are normally around 1/2 inch and those openers are well capable of that. Good luck!
@theback40
@theback40 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Johnny, thank you for the info! That's one of the things I have found I like the most is the ease of picking it up with the three point hitch, repositioning, and then dropping it back down for straight (and slight curved) planting rows. Good luck to you as well!

It's not a no-till drill but based upon what you've been telling us, and your soil is softer, it sounds like it can work.
@theback40
@theback40 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Still testing to make sure it will do the job, but it is looking promising so far after 2 plantings. It can for sure plant no-till style in the sandy soil here, even though it is not an official no-till drill. I just want to verify that once the thatch is built up on the soil surface that it can still plant effectively. This year will be the test. Thanks for the comment, all the best to you.

Hey Tim! Tractor is 46 hp, and the rear hitch is rated for around 1500 pounds. Could use a much smaller tractor, the drill only weighs around 700 pounds, and I can barely tell the drill is back there while planting, zero strain on the engine. All the best to you!
