Thanks for this! I’m continuing to follow this closely. I really appreciate how detailed and specific your videos are. I’m very close to pulling the trigger on a DRL-48 but I’m going to follow your progress for a season. I’m trying my best to do no till as well. Wondering if you looked at the Woods seeder with the disc in front. Similar idea but it has a disc in front with an adjustable angle. The disc can be straight for min till or angled for more aggressive work. Wanted to get your thoughts because really I’m trying to decide between that and this.
@theback40
@theback40 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Francis, I absolutly did look at the Woods seeder, but to me, it seemed like the discs and roller with the spikes on it were going to disrupt the soil too much? Not sure if this is true, but just my opinion, and the reason I decided to steer away from the Woods and try to find something that would slice open the soil, not rough up the surface. One of the rules of no-till is MINIMAL soil disturbance. Let me know what your thoughts are, too.
@franciszell
@franciszell 3 жыл бұрын
@@theback40 I appreciate the response. I do worry that the woods would tear up the ground too much as well but at the end of the day I can’t imagine it doing much more than a coulter on a no till if the disc was angled straight? I don’t know. I do like the very sturdy design of it. We’re in West Virginia and soil is kind of rocky and root strewn so I worry about the durability of the drl. That’s one of the reasons I am following your reviews so closely.

Hey John, it has served me well, so far. But remember, it is a light duty machine. If you're just doing a few acres of crops of foodplots every year in soft soil, you'll be good. But if doing large scale or medium to hard soil, you may want to keep looking around. All the best to you.

New subscriber! I hope the drill works out for you. My biggest issue is how to start a plot this spring from scratch. Round up, then broadcast or plow and disc?
@theback40
@theback40 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! I started all my plots from scratch at some point over the last 25 years, and if I had to do it over again, I would never work the soil with a plow, disk, or rototiller. My plan A would be send in a soil test, hit it with Roundup, spread appropriate amount of lime and fertilizer per the soil test, and DRILL in the seed. Plan B, if you don't have a drill, would be to broadcast, and then be patient with the process as it will take a few seasons to get the weeds under control, the soil pH right, and your skills/experience developed to figure out how to get good germination with broadcasting.

Hi I’m in Michigan too and also on sandy ground and was wondering if after you using it now and having it for a year or better , if you were to buy one again would you buy the same one or spend a little more and get a heavier built one ? ( I heard you say it was built light duty)

Hey Mike, great question. Although I tend to buy high quality and not care about cost for most things, I still like the decision I made with this and yes, would do it again, based on what I know today. BUT......ask me 5 years from now and if it is becoming a maintenance nightmare or not performing propertly, I'll kick myself and say "see, you should ALWAYS go for quality, not price". But I took a calculated risk with this piece of equipment, and so far so good. All the best to you.

Thanks for the update Mark. In your video you showed some switchgrass seed in the small seed box. Did you plant switchgrass with this drill? If so, how did it perform? Was it easy to calibrate for such a small seed? I am looking for a drill that can plant switchgrass. I have tried frost seeding switchgrass with very little luck. I think our soil is too sandy and dry for broadcasting. I think we would have better luck if the seed was no-till drilled deeper where there is more moisture and with mulch on the surface to help retain moisture. What are your thoughts?

@@theback40 OK. I just "pulled the trigger" on a SAYA 505 (5 foot model) as I could get one yet this year. Next week I start the No Till process on my land. Likely non too soon.....as I need to concur a pigweed issue that has changed the way I will do things in the future. No more clean rows or bare dirt for me - where the pigweed establishes too easily.. Gonna keep green cover on my plots when ever possible. I hope to reduce tillage as much as possible. I did allot of research.....and these Tar River drills seem the best bang for the buck currently. OK, so I'm calculating #'s per acre. If I collect from 2 of the 10 drops in one box that's gone 200'. I'm multiplying the 6.25 width of the drill x 200' and using that ratio (34.85) of an acre to multiply later. I weigh the two seed drops over 200' x 5 (for the other rows) x 34.85 (my ratio percentage of 6.25 for 200' of an acre) to get pounds per acre it's dropping..... Right? How's that for math on an early Sunday morning!

Some have concerns about getting small seed rates through these machines. I have one suggestion that has worked for me when I need to get the seed rate way down.....such as with turnips, brassica's, and such. Until now I have mostly been a broadcaster....so I have used these things in my Herd seeder....but I see no reason it would not work in these drills too. I use kitty litter as a inert filler material and mix that with the seed in a large pail(s). This allows a much smaller amount of seed delivery / acre and does not cost allot. Also, pellet rye would work well here.....and I have considered some Miligornate fertilizer as it is very small particles too. I have used this to keep the deer off my soybeans for a few weeks.....as they do not like the odor.

So far so good. Great calibration so the planting rate is perfect every time, it gets most of the seed into the soil, and germinates. With a name like "Redclay", if you truly have clay you are working on, this would NOT be the machine for you except when the soil is plenty moist to soften it up. All the best to you.

I did look these type of seeders over back when I was trying to figure out what might work, but decided that because they don't have any discs that slice open the soil, I would pass on this type. I thought the spikes on the wheels might churn up the soil more than I wanted for no-till and reduce the benefits. But I never had a chance to test it, so I could be wrong. Mark, may I ask where you bought the drill at. I have a new plot that I just stared this year and Had to till it to smooth it out and could not believe how fast the soil dried out. I think that I would like to do a spring cover crop of some sort and then drill into it and burn it down. Some spots in the plot are harder than others but like you I'm just planting for deer. I think the larger DRL-072 would work well for this. I drilled in beans yesterday and the rain today missed it by a 1/2 mile. What a bummer. I need that thatch for the dry days. I also live in Michigan up near Cadillac. Keep the video's coming, watching them all more than a couple times. Thanks Mark Ryan

Hey Ryan, I purchased this drill at Burnips Equipment, they have a dealer about 15 minutes away. The Michigan wholesaler is Farmco Distributing out of Lansing, you could give them a call and ask for a local distributor up there. I am glad I started this no-till process a few years ago so I at least have some thatch and organic matter built up to hold moisture, it is so dry here too. Having rain so close when you need it so bad is disheartening, but if we all keep no-tilling, a few years from now we won't care so much as our soil will be a sponge! Best of luck, keep us updated.

I tried beans, and a beans/corn mix a few times a few years ago (my plots add up to about 4 acres), and the same thing happened, once they got 3-4 inches tall, the deer decimated them and just the corn made it, even though only a few hundred yards away there are huge farm fields full of beans!

@@theback40 I have the base model yours is built off, I have had luck with no-till here in coastal SC sandy soils but only when the soil is very wet. It cuts a deep slice, deposits the soybean in the open trench and then the soil swells back in around the seed. I don't have a cultipacker on the back so yours will probably do better than mine. That crop of soybeans was one of my best ever, I think mainly because the vegetation gave the seedlings a little cover from the deer.
