In this week’s episode, we discuss the new ball head I finally got along with the 175k giveaway! Ever since I've been focused on landscape photography I think I've changed or upgraded just about every piece of gear that I own from cameras, to lenses, tripods and camera bags, but one thing I've never upgraded was the ball head that I'm using. I've been using the same ball head now for many years with no real complaints, but recently I got my hands on a new ball head that I'm pretty excited about and wanted to share it with you all today.
In this video, I'll review the soon to be released Aspen Ball Head from the Colorado Tripod Company. I don't want to spoil the video, but there's a lot to be desired with this new ball head and I find it perfect for landscape photography. I personally haven't paid much attention to the ball head market over the years, but I've got to believe that this is the best looking one I've ever seen! Plus it's substantially less expensive than the ball head I've been using - it's the classic "win win"! I hope you enjoy this week's video and thanks so much for all the support over the last couple of years AND be sure to stick around to the end for the 175k Giveaway! Thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

After multiple surgeries, I did my first BRP hike today. The first thing I realized was only having one pocket (tripod holder) on the side of my bag. Immediately I knew I couldn't use it because the weight was completely unbalanced. I do apologize that I do not comment much because I usually watch KZfaq on my TV with Xbox and it doesn't provide much engagement options. After my first back surgery I wanted an off road van to live in, so your latest videos have been extra great to watch. I'm using a D5600 and have the ability to purchase a couple great lenses, or another camera. I just rewatched your video when you switched to the DX Fuji and it was a great reminder that better lenses on my crop sensor camera would be much better than basic lenses on a full frame. Great you see you succeeding at your dream and even better that you keep all of us in your growing gratitude.

I have the Mindshift 26L - Really appreciate all the additional storage for non-photo gear - like extra clothes, water-proofs, food/water. You could really hike far and/or spend the day out and about with everything you may need neatly packed away with you. The lucky winner will enjoy!

I’m using a Tenba Axis 32L and the biggest problem with it is that I always feel like I NEED to fill every inch of it with gear that I inevitably don’t use so I just end up carrying extra weight for no reason… That ball head is crazy unique looking. At first I’ll admit I thought it was ugly and now I’m sitting here trying to decide if I “need” another ball head. It grew on me pretty quickly. Keep up the great videos!

I use a Lowerpro Pro Trekker 450 AW. It holds as much gear as my back can carry and has a removable topper if I want to take binoculars, rain gear or extra food. Also, has provision for a water bladder, so no messing with bottles. It is a bit heavy, but that's due to solid construction and there is nothing worse than your pack failing when you are miles away from your car. It does not have the popular opens on the side against your back feature, but I always carry a small ground cloth to lay my bag down on anyway and the bag has adjustments for your torso length, which bags that open against your back generally lack. It would be nice to have your smaller giveaway bag when I don't need to haul quite as much equipment. Definitely, a striking ballhead you have there but it looks like it will be harder to keep it clean and I'll go with the extra two ounces in favor of the smaller foot print for travel and not catching on things during transport. Maybe you'll give away your old ballhead when you hit 200,000? 😀

Never owned a decent ball head or a camera back pack I have never been comfortable with backpacks they are always to big and clumsy, I never carry much equipment so a smaller backpack might just be what I am looking for! Thank you for explaining your latest ball head that looks a decent bit of kit! Oh and well done for attracting all those subscribers.

Hi Mark. Thank you for this superb review and comparison of these two fine ball heads! As a landscape, product and ocassional wildlife photographer, I always use a solid tripod, such as the robust Leofoto LS-365C and the LH40 ball head. For "travel" I am testing the 3LT Leo 2.0 with AirHed Pro Level ball head. The only thing I notice with the "Lever" type of Arca-Swiss clamp, is that when tight (no camera movement), the Lever clamp can still be wiggled slightly left-right or up/down. However, this movement does not affect the stability of the locked clamp. I've always used a "twist" screw lock, so perhaps I just need to get more used to the lever. That said the tripod itself seems rock solid, and has a load capacity of 66 lbs! Thanks again, Mark, and enjoy your Fuji GFX system!

I am using now for a few month a new Photobag called The "Element Backpack" from a company called Compagnon from Germany. It is a 30 litres bag with a plus rolltop of 12 litres. It was a true odyssey to receive it because it was sent to a friend in Berlin who was going to travel to Santiago/Chile. From there it was picked up by another friend living in the same city who had planeed a trip to Patagonia where I live very soon, but for the Pandemic, she could not travel. So another friend of mine who is living near my home was going to return from a trip to Valparaíso to Puerto Natale, where I live (some 3000 km further south), a few months later and on his way to the airport, in Santiago, he visited this second friend and picked up the bag and brought it to me. So since I bought it until I received it, there was a lapse of time of 4 months. I am very happy with it but still need a bag a bit smaller such as a 26 litres for smaller trips around the city.

I don't care a lot about ballhead features, but the weight is one of the most important things for me. I don't have a dedicated camera backpack, I use my regular backpack with my peak design 3L sling in there as padded insert for the lenses. Not super convenient, and was planning to get a proper camera backpack. That Mindshift one looks promising, very slick and good size for day trips!

Mark, idea for you van, what about a counter with shallow drawers under the counter. Store two movable benches underneath the drawers. Would provide a workstation/ eating area plus some storage. The movable benches can also double as additional storage. You could also mount a monitor to the van wall. Ideas, hope this is useful.

Two questions on the ball head - 1.When you tighten it up does it shift the orientation slightly or does it stay locked in where you want it? 2. Do you have to really crank down on the tension to hold the camera or does normal tension do the job?

I also primarily shoot landscapes and I stopped using ballheads a while ago. My most recent ballhead was an RRS BH-55. This is a tank of a head but as all ballheads it is not the ideal tool for a landscape photographer. Loosening the ballhead makes it rotate in all directions and that is an annoyance when finetuning a composition. I switched to a panoramic head instead. I was drooling over the Acratech “long lens” head but it is quite expensive, especially over here in Europe. I ended up purchasing the Leofoto VH-30R head and couldn’t be happier. The head is levelled in a breeze and it allows independent vertical and horizontal movements. That is an invaluable feature for us landscape photographers. The Leofoto head is very well build and prized attractively. I strongly invite you to try a head like this in the field. I bet you do not want a ballhead any longer after trying a head like this one! I’m not posting any links because youtube will remove them but you can find Leofoto’s website by adding .com to their name.

Great tips on ball heads Mark, much appreciated I use a Thule Aspect backpack for two reasons. Number one, there is ample space for things other than photo gear, you know, stuff you might need when outdoors like a jacket, snacks, first aid. Number two, it's a side-access pack so I get sling it off one shoulder and get anything I need without putting it face down on the ground. . Bonus points for being both rugged and affordable.

Congrats on the 175K+! My bag is an older Lowepro 350 AW ProTactic. I like it because it's fairly rugged and has been kicked around in the trunk and on the ground without totally falling apart. The padding inside is plenty enough for my camera and it's comfortable enough but I'm outgrowing the size as I added a new lens.

I'm currently using the Lowepro Slingshot 202 for strolls around the city and the Lowepro Fastpack 250AW for hikes and longer sessions. Holds all my needed gear and offers some room for snacks and beverages. And the side access feature on both is a feature i wouldn't ever want to miss again, I love not having to take off the bag to reach for my camera.

I’ve been using a 15 year old lowepro mini trekker. At the time I didn’t have any gear at all and it felt ridiculous using it. As my gear multiplied 😄😄😄 I managed to fill it up but there is hardly any space for personal items let alone storage for a jacket or anything else truly useful. Nowadays I use the lowepro to store my gear in the house and when I go out I use a hiking backpack with a camera insert.

My current bag is the Abonnyc Large DSLR Camera Backpack. I bought it specifically for meeting the carry on size requirements. I wanted to be able to take multiple lenses and accessories like hard drives, filters, etc and also a 13in tablet and this bag meets all the specs and is super comfortable to wear. My only complaint is one of the shoulder straps is already starting to separate from the bag. I have a smaller LowePro bag for carrying my Fuji XT3 and one or two lenses.

Big fan of RRS ballheads. My main head is the BH55. The BH40 is for my travel tripod. And I use the BH30 for field scopes. They are great quality and can be found used at highly discounted prices. I have found that some plates will slip in RRS clamps. But, I've never had a problem with RRS or Wimberley plates.

Thanks for this video! I've been looking for a lighter weight tripod and ballhead for a while now. I had already sort of settled on the Centennial tripod, but hadn't found a ballhead yet. It was nice to hear from someone who's actually used the gear and liked it.

Currently using a Deuter 44L with camera cube, usually for longer hikes to fit everything I’d need for the day, but it is a bit cumbersome. This looks like a great day pack!

Love the look of the new Aspen Ballhead. i will defiantly have to add on to my to buy list. i am currently rocking the ThinkTank Lily Dianne tutto and a 10 year old Lowepro Pro Runner 300 AW The lowepro has served me well but its certainly time to retire it and replace it with a new bag, and the mindShift Backlight looks like it will be a good fit as i too am a landscaped Photographer. I am crossing my fingers on this one xxxxxxxx

I just stepped in the camera game a couple of months ago. I don't have a lot of budget to invest in gears and accessories, so I'm using an everyday bag bought from Amazon. Thank you for sharing the review. Some video like this help me decide which gear is worth the money to balance my budget.

I have a lowpro bag that's pretty nice, the equipment access is from both sides and I hardly ever forget to zip it back up 😬 after changing lenses .

Using the Peak Design Sling when I don't need to carry anything but 2 lens, and a camera body. When traveling, I use the PacSafe bag, with a Peak Design Camera Clip on the strap. So much safer in certain cities and countries, less obvious your bag is camera oriented and the security feature on the PacSafe bags do work. Can't remember how many times I am standing in a subway train or lining up to get into a venue or tourist spot and I feel a tug on the bag but the pickpocket can't get the bag to actually open.

I have the Mindshift Rotation Trail and 34L bags and love them. The rotation system is really handy out on a hike.

I am currently using a Gura Gear 16L bag. I am quite short, and it fit perfectly right from the start. Although it is a small bag I can fit a Sigma 150-600 ona D800E into the bag if I move the foot about about 45 degrees. I can also fit a 105 macro or a 24-120 on the camera into the otherside of the bag. In general I like to have the lenses on the camera because the less often I remove a lens in the field, the less often I will need to clean the sensor. Like the channel.

My primary camera bag is an old Dakine photo backpack, supplemented by a smaller Lowepro Flipside 300 for when I'm carrying only one camera body and one or (at most) two lenses on daytrips around town. While I like the Dakine bag, it is very shallow in depth, preventing storage of most of my lenses except in the vertical position along the long dimension of the bag. This really limits the lenses I can carry for longer photo trips. I think the Mindshift bag makes better use of its interior volume.

I like the ball heads but I’m a peak design fan. Use their bags like the everyday backpack normally and slingshot for street photos.

We're the one's who should be thanking you for your hard work and excellent content. The way you explain photography is very approachable and helpful for people at all levels. I always know that I'm going to enjoy your videos and also learn something that will help me be a better photographer. Thank you. BTW, Nikon guy using a Canon bag because it meets my needs. Spray painted over the Canon metal label though.

Really sweet-looking ball head. Congratulation on your 175K milestone Mark. I am currently using an Endurax camera bag. It has enough space but is not very comfortable.

Right now I have a small camera bag for camera, filter and spare batteries. I put that into backpack to two or three lenses. Would enjoy having a backpack with all the compartment to lens, filters, etc

I have Tenba Fulton 14l and I love it...enough space for my gear and some snacks. Best thing is that it doesn't look like a camera bag so I don't look strange on a trip with my family😂 only thing showing what's inside is the tripod on the side😉

An interesting design, slightly outside the box. I've been using Acratech for 10 years now, I mainly use the pano head, it does everything a ball head does and the advantage of being able to set the head level and move L-R and up/down has proven to be great for what I do. THe APSEN does seem to be a good fit for you. Cheers. PS Congratulations! the hard work is paying off!!

Nice review. I've used a RRS BH-55 head for over ten years now and still love it. I think RRS seriously underrates their gear. I'm sure the BH-40 would handle more than needed in almost any situation. Maybe other that a 600 f/4 or something like that. One thing I didn't see in your review was how effective the tension adjustment is on the Colorado Tripod head. That's one thing I appreciate about the RRS head. There's always predictable friction to movement and it's always smooth, even after ten years of use. Congrats on 175,000!

I have a Tamrac backpack that I've used for about 10 years now and enjoy. I just added a new lens to my collection that I would like to carry around, but that has put me over the edge and now I have to choose which lens to leave behind.

I'm currently using a very nice bag from Zecti that I bought on Amazon. It's big enough, doesn't cost too much and, important thing, it has a safety lock behind the back so it's safe for my gear too. It's perfect for my Sony a7 and taking photos just for fun .

That's a great tripod company!!! I have one of their Highline ballheads and really love it, great quality!! The Aspen looks really good, quite tempting to upgrade to it as well! They are a great company and great customer service too!! Congrats on the milestone! You put out great quality videos and are so straightforward with your knowledge and help, easy to see why more and more people follow you!!!! Very cool to offer a bag give away!!! I am using a Lowepro currently but seems like one can never have too many bags, different sizes are definitely needed at times, depending how much gear you want to bring along. Or if you're an over-packer like me, always seems to run out of room in the bag just when I'm trying to squeeze in one more thing......lol

Currently using the PD Everyday Backpack 20L V1 and the Messenger V1. But for about 2-1/2 years I got by with just the Patagonia Black Hole Waist Pack 5L (not at all intended for photography). Could carry two cameras; Sony a6300 w/kit lens and Pentax ME-F 35mm film camera w/50mm lens. Could hold extra film, extra batteries, mini tripod, lens wipes, wireless remote, my passport, and two bottles of water if I didn't mind looking like I had a little Blastoise around my waist. It got me around all of SE Asia and various islands in the pacific with no trouble. Cheers.
