I’m from a different country (UK) and spent my life in a different game (construction) but we were told never to encroach within 6 metres (20 foot) horizontally of power cables, particularly with metal equipment like ladders, scaffold’s, cranes, telescopic booms etc etc. It’s surprising how far those power lines can arc.
@InquisitiveSearcher
@InquisitiveSearcher 3 жыл бұрын
poetsdontknowit: Yes she should absolutely avoid coming in contact with the power lines. However, its a very interesting fact that even with as much metal as there is in the combine, it's all insulated from the ground by those big rubber wheels. :-)
@jimnyffeler5287
@jimnyffeler5287 3 жыл бұрын
@@InquisitiveSearcher When I was growing up we always had a length of heavy log chain bolted to the combine frame. It was long enough to drag on the ground to dissipate static electricity. The rubber tires wouldn't be much help if the combine contacted the powerline. I see farmers still doing that.

Laura, it was not your fault that the PTO shaft broke. The break does not appear to be a brittle fracture that could be caused by overloading such as say putting too much crop in the header. Instead, it appears to be a fatigue failure that propagated over a long period of time from an initial small area of defect or damage on the shaft. It was going to fail one day and today happened to be the day. If you look at the circular cross section of the broken shaft at 7:49, the area between 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock is darker indicating that section failed a season ago or perhaps earlier. The origin of the failure appears to be at the root of a spline at 1 o'clock caused by a tiny bit of damage or manufacturing defect in the past. A more recent propagation of failure can be seen in the lighter coloured area above a line from 9 o'clock to 4 o'clock. The area below 9 o'clock to 4 o'clock is where, with now too little good metal remaining to take the load, the shaft finally and instaneously brittle fractured. As a mechanical engineer, I have been looking at these kind of failures for many years. Difficult to predict and prevent and a bummer when they happen. Oops I see several other engineering types have joined the party with a similar diagnosis!

Always good to get concurrence. I have 40 years in Aerospace/Defense including crash damage evaluations of aircraft in far away places. Seems there is a Laura Farms Engineering Consulting group! I wonder if there is a local shop that can do a dye penetrant or magnaflux inspection of the other side.
@dellhell8842
@dellhell8842 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeknowles8017 Yes that is a good suggestion on the other shaft . Being a farm, I'd say they will just get this one fixed for now to get the harvest across the line. But in the long down period after that, they need to check out the the other side. Wow, that's an impressive career you have had. Fortunately, in mine, of similar longevity, I have not had to deal with situations that resulted in loss of life. That brings a whole other dimension to things.

that shaft didn't just suddenly fail, it started with a crack, maybe a tooling error in the milling process, something that wasn't done 'after the sale'... (pretty sure that overloading a cutter head would break a shear bolt loong before it broke a driveshaft...)

The shaft break was a bummer, and while your field looks super clean, it looked like you had the head up high enough to pass over any loose rock laying about. A rock in the gathering chains can wake you up real quick. Those long fields can hypnotize you back and forth all day long. Watching that corn coming straight to you in the cab. After a couple of 14 hour days seeing that all day, when you finally hit the bed at night it can be a disappointment to wake up in the morning realizing you dreamed all night about that corn still coming at you. lol

Laura, you should have the shaft on the opposite side checked out too when replacing this one. If made in the same factory/process and run the same number of hours then the other side could have fatigue cracks in the shaft/splines -- a careful check of the surface may avoid being down a second day. ... Break probably happened in the heat treat run out area as the steel grain structure changes there plus stress-risers from sharp splines or a snap ring/bearing groove... At least from what I can see by stopping the video. Get a magnifying glass or zoom in on high resolution still pictures of the broken shaft ends so you can look at the break closer, a bit more homework for the college student ;) -- intro to Material Science and Mechanical Engineering right there in that broken part.

Sucks but it is what it is, quality parts reduce problems but they still happen.
