Just had an amazing idea. For each pivot, bring 1 cat. release the cat at the pivot to clear the mice then go start the pivot. :) Better yet, get some remote control cat you can control around the pivot making cat hissing sounds :)

Thnx Laura, great., great video, irrigating the clean (and coool) water from the aquifer, good for a shower appearantly 😂👍. Good instructions on starting the several engines first and after engage the PTO's etc., Nice to see all your pivots running. Your plants / crops look great, thanks for showing! Well done 👍 So there is a 'crop consultant' for your farm for over 35 years, thus with lots of experience that sounds awesome. Maybe one day you can make video with this consultant and discuss the technical considerations and objectives etc. For example the half inch of water that was adviced in the report. Maybe possible to discuss the aspects in the report?

Hi Laura! Love your channel! Might I suggest putting battery disconnects on your pivots, instead of having to remove cables? They are available at your local Napa or on Amazon. I would also recommend Deltran battery tenders with solar charging option, for the off season. Side note: it’s never good practice to pound on battery posts.

Laura, you are going great! Night jobs can lead to confusion, and a breakdown in communication. Always a good idea to stay in communication when out on jobs on your own, especially night jobs. I've had my share of night work mishaps. Even got lost in a 1300 acre field one night. Tractor lights are useless on dark, dusty nights, no matter how many lights you have, that's for sure. No GPS in those days. 1983/4 in Queensland, Australia we had a mouse plague. If you thought a few mice jumping off the engine is awful, you'll freak out over a moving mass of mice! Those unguarded drive shafts on the pivot motors are a worry. Best wishes. Take care, hey!

A suggestion - while moving between the rows of corn - be aware of spider webs between the rows. As a kid I ran the corn rows on our farms and ran into more surprises than I ever thought I would encounter. Don't want you hurt or having your heart leave your body. Just a word of wisdom - remember always - Safety First - no matter where you are or what you may be doing. Love your work!!!!!

Awwww baxter is such a good boy :). I love watching your videos, I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago but we used to go out to someones farm all the time during the spring, summer and fall. So for mice. There is a product called chlorine, and people uses "floaters" for their pools. Inside these floaters, are chlorine discs. Get yourself some of these, break them into pieces and leave them where you want no mice. The chlorine will dissolve in air over time, so you might want to check up on the places regularly. Great for storage areas, and the chlorine smell seems cleaner also.

After watching your start up process of your irrigation it's pretty much the same as we do in the UK just the control panels are slightly different, I take it when the pivot gets to the end and trips it automatically shuts the pump down? I can't get over how all your PTO's are not covered or guarded if that was in the UK you would have health and safety crawling all over the whole farm dishing out fines left right an center for anything they can find 😂 Keep up the great vids Laura very informative 👍

Fun video. I have seen Nebraska pivot irrigation from the air while flying from Portland OR to Chicago. It was informative seeing them from the ground level. I am retired from Oregon Drinking water Services. We live in north Texas now. Followed my daughter and three grandsons (2 .5, 7, and 9.5). You need to wear safety glasses when you are working on things, especially if you are underneath what you are working on.

It is so important that your plants have enough water at this time of year. Zea Mays is a C4 plant and as such can photosynthesis at a phenomenal rate given the warmth and sunshine of midsummer Nebraska. Fertile soils and good fertiliser application mean that the plants can expand their leaves and extend their nodes ready for flower formation and filling the seed head later. Your work is so critical and it is encouraging to see you tackling it with so much enthusiasm.😀 Keep up the good work.

I live in Northern California agriculture area in the North Sacramento Valley. I had gotten a new microphone for my internet radio station. Old as dirt. (Good to see Grandpa out there - get him on camera.) Grew up on a farm in Iowa where we don't irrigate. Great videos, BTW! Good enough that you should get sponsorship from Nebraska FB, or even Nebraska Tourism. Geeky pivot questions - Does the engine also generate the electrical power for the system? What fuel does the engine burn? (diesel, LP, natural gas, fairy dust) How is the fuel delivered to the field? How deep are your wells? What kind of GPM are you pumping?
@mitchheine6878
@mitchheine6878 4 жыл бұрын
Yes sometimes there is a three phase generator on the engine and lots have buried cable from the power lines, those three are the most common fuels usually there is a tank next to the well or they are hooked up to a gas line and the depth can very well to well along with the gpm but most are 500-1000+ gpm

What if you had a zip-tie with a thin rope tied to it to fix a few spigots without needed a full suit? When you kink the hose, slide the semi-tight zip-tie around the kink so it's not going to come undone. Then after you get done working on cleaning the spigot, step back several feet and yank the rope to pull the zip-tie off the kink. Might work, might be a waste of time, just a thought!

Agree with comments on unguarded PTO shaft safety on this and some other of Laura's videos. With uneven and slippy ground and tripping hazards in the vicinity, very bad things can happen. At least she has her hair tied up fully in this one. Here in Ireland, while we do not need pivots, other PTO shaft applications have been a particular focus of farm safety inspections. As a dad, no way would I be sending my kid on that job in the dark of night, just piling up the risks. No doubt, I did similar stuff as a kid growing up in a farm myself but I had a few near misses and safety awareness and enforcement here has come a long way since then. Not putting a downer on the video content, it is very informative and her enthusiasm is infective. Just please be careful around unguarded moving parts and pressurized hoses and vessels. Get a body or head camera holder so you can use both your hands when operating the machinery.

@@anthonybinning3853 Agreed there is no way to make it zero risk. All I am saying is that if it is not feasible to retrofit guards on the moving parts, then at least consider other measures to mitigate the risks such as adequate lighting, tied up hair, no loose clothing, no clutter and no distraction which unfortunately making a video on your own while operating the equipment is.
