I might throw in the still-living-and-performing Gavin Rossdale, but as a Brit he’s a little different from those Seattle grunge rockers. On second thought, I think Dave Grohl fits in the category also.

This whole project was for Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. The Seattle music scene of the late 80’s and early 90’s was a small community, with Sub Pop Records at the center. These guys all knew each other and it’s sad so many of them were gone way too soon. The pain and passion in this album was very real. You need to listen to Say Hello To Heaven and to some Audioslave. The many vocal eras of Chris Cornell. Loving the channel!

In addition to just knowing each other, Chris Cornell and Andrew Wood were roommates and besties. "I don’t know if you can ever take him out of [my heart and soul]" Cornell mused about Wood. "There was a period of time when he would sit in his bedroom across the hall from mine and we would kind of have these dueling four-track demos and songs. He wasn’t doing it for Malfunkshun and me doing it for Soundgarden; it had nothing to do with that. It was us just having fun. Maybe you can look at it as songwriting exercises? We were always kind of neck and neck. We were very different from each other in terms of our approach. He was very free and didn’t necessarily have a critical voice while he was in the process of writing a song. He would just do anything. I on the other hand," admitted Cornell, "not only do I have a critical voice, I have sort of an editorial staff and what that creates is something kind of completely different." "He would do these amazing free things that felt so - almost to the degree of just being dangerous in a way -because it was so free and un-self-conscious," Cornell reminisced. "I would think 'How do you do that?' We would always observe each other. That’s sort of like what I would equate to early college years, that doesn’t go away. Those experiences never stop being a part of who you are and how you think."

Two of the greatest vocalists of my generation. Chris was one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. This is one of those songs that I can't hear loud enough or often enough. It still makes me feel as it did all those years ago, it's utterly sublime!

In my opinion Temple of the Dog was Chris Cornells best vocals. I know I am going to get hate but his later stuff I wish he would just open his mouth because I am not a fan of the sound. Greatest rock vocalists of all time, No but he was good. One of the greatest grunge yes. There are so many better vocalists in rock over the years but he knew his lane and did it very well, him and Eddie were the masters of grunge.

I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!

This is forever considered one of the best songs not only in grunge, not only in rock, but in the history of music in general. The combination of both voices, the tessitura, softness and intensity of Chris and Eddie, the beautiful contrast that goes from Corner's voice to Eddie gravity. when the instruments change tone and the beautiful cries of Chris with a voice as powerful as that of a fucking God.! They make this song remain for posterity as a Grunge anthem.

Euphoria Morning is a masterpiece. I recommend listening to the whole album end to end, but check out Preaching the End of the World, Follow My Way, Moonchild, and Steel Rain just to name a few that get less notoriety than Can't Change Me.

Love the story of the recording of this song. This was the beginning of a brotherhood between the two. Eddie just joined Pearl Jam and was at this session and heard Chris trying to sing both high and low parts of the chorus. He was having a tough time trying to incorporate both parts, but Eddie, as a great vocalist, heard what he was trying to do and understood Chris' thinking. He ended up hopping on the mic, belted out the low part, and the rest is history. We were left with this gem of a song, and a long-lasting friendship began. Rest easy, Chris.

I remember watching this video on MTV when it first came out. I couldn’t believe how beautiful and harmonious their two voices were. I remember waiting for the video to come around, as there was no internet or youtube back then. Every time the video replayed I felt lucky and grateful to hear it once more.

The story behind this song/ album is so touching. There's a doc about it, about Andy Wood, i saw when looking for interview footage of Chris after he died. It's a really beautiful doc, sad story, and was the perfect thing i was searching for. I've watched it a few times cause it's such a testament of love. I didnt appreciate Chris enough while he was alive and i regret that. I liked his music but i didn't give him the proper attention or respect and acknowledgement till after. He was really amazing and his music lives on RIP Chris Cornell

I saw Soundgarden back with their Louder than Love tour. Chris is such a powerful singer you could hear him above the PA system. He could blow your hair back.

I remember smiling uncontrollably when he had moments of letting rip & going straight at you instead of thru the PA thru his one-man-and-his-acoustic solo shows. Granted I was only a few rows back, but good grief, could that man shift air when he felt like it. No wonder he blew out 4 or 5 expensive Neumann microphones while recording "Superunknown"!! :)

I think they would probably agree since TOTD was a collaborative project meant to honor their friend Andrew Wood. It was never about competing. You need to hear Mad Season, a side project that was comprised of members of the Seattle grunge scene at the time, including Layne Staley (Alice In Chains) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam). It's some of Layne's best work ('Wake Up' is especially poignant). Even the instrumental 'November Hotel' will blow your mind.

For me, I'm in my fifties now, this is still one of the best albums ever. Especially this song. The combination of their voices. As others have commented, it was a small scene. From my understanding Eddie was in town auditioning for Mookie Blaylock which would become pearl jam. He was hanging out while the band was practicing. Chris was trying to sing both parts an just was not getting what he heard in his head. the next run thru Eddie just stepped up to the mike gave Chris a look and sang the lower part. they knew it was something right away. This was Eddie Vedder's first appearance on a studio album.

The doco PJ20 talks about this. Apparently , this was Eddies first professional studio recording. There are a couple of KZfaq videos of Soundgarden live where Eddie will jump on Matt Cameron’s mic.(Outshined). Chris had teamed up with the members of Mother Love Bone (after being a flat mate with the recently deceased Andy Wood) and Motherlove bone were auditioning singers. I’m glad that Chris gave Eddy this opportunity and both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam evolved to give us the 90’s we love

Saw Chris with Soundgarden on LOLLAPOLOOZA 92 which overall was better than 93 and 94 minus Alice In Chains (93). Included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush, Rage Against The Machine, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Stone Temple Pilots, Temple of the Dog. Chris blew everyone away with those amazing vocals into the stratosphere! Love and miss the sound of that man’s voice! I find myself crying at the beginning of Hunger Strike. RIP CHRIS!

Definitely a perfect balance of both their voices. I don't know how much I played this song when it came out, but you could be fairly certain if I was driving for more than an hour this would be on at least 3 times during that trip for the first month.

Just discovered this channel and I'm now binging. Love you analysis and your obvious passion for singing and vocal technique. I first heard Eddie Vedder live in a Tower Records promotional set in my hometown. Then a month later at Lalapalooza. Both times, despite the different venue sizes and acoustics, he just reached into my soul and totally captivated. So dynamic, raw and emotional. Love listening to him and PJ.

I was in college radio during the beginning of the grunge music era, and this song and Say Hello to Heaven were staples with early stuff by Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, etc… great time to be in radio…

Interesting story about how this song came together. Temple of the Dog is the rhythm section of Pearl Jam, formerly Mother Love Bone, whose singer had passed away. During the recording of this album, the remaining MLB members were auditioning singers for what would become Pearl Jam. Eddie Veder flew up to Seattle for his audition during the recording of this song. Chris's throat was sore and he told Eddie to take a crack at it. Eddie laid down his track and Chris said: "Eddie sang it exactly how I wanted it to sound".

The story behind Eddie’s appearance on this is CRAZY. What you are hearing is Eddie’s first appearance on an album. He had just got into town from San Diego to form what would become Pearl Jam. 3 of the guys from what would be Pearl Jam were in the studio recording this tribute album to their friend Andrew Wood with Chris and Matt from Soundgarden. Eddie did not really know any of these guys. They had just met that day. Eddie heard Chris cutting his vocal track and Eddie asked if he could give a verse a try. The rest is history. This performance was not planned and was Eddie being at the right place at the right time.

I'm a huge fan of both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder. When this song came out it was still somewhat early in both of their careers. To me it sounds like two alpha male wolves with their packs calling to each other in the wild and beckoning each other to join forces and create something greater than the music world had ever heard before. Incredible collaboration!

What's amazing is how fulfilling this song is lyrically, and then you stop and realize it literally has one verse and one chorus, repeated in a mantra fashion. Evidence that it's not always how many words you have to say, but the feeling and power behind how you say (sing) it.

From this album: Say Hello 2 Heaven. A must-have! A remarkable vocal display, a performance that shows off the amazing range of Chris' voice. I've heard this song thousands of times and seemingly always know what to expect.... but still, every time I listen to it, I'm very impressed and amazed how good Chris was.
