“What’s happening? Why is he freaking out?” That man was filled with the Holy Spirit. That’s Shaun Martin, Grammy Award winning gospel musician.

Live album recording of the brand new album Empire Central due out September 30th. They did 2 sessions a night for 7-8 nights in a row in Dallas. Played 7 songs each session. I was able to attend two of them. Amazing experience.

Man this is a pretty spiritual thing for some of these guys. That "vibe" everyone can feel is like a literal manifestation of some heavenly choir. Some kind of reflection of the collective soul that these guys bring. When they're in that place, it's sacred and powerful and pulls people along, they go for a ride, even when they don't understand the skill that went into all these layers and feelings. Magic.

Tickets to this were like $200 but I think they included some pre-show and after-party business as well, plus a discount on a hotel room, so not bad for what it was. I almost went but I had something else going that week at work so couldn’t :( Great reaction! Thanks for this

After parties were cancelled each night. I guess they had one big one after the last session. I was at two of the sessions on the first weekend so wasn't able to make the after party. Still worth it. Most unique musical experience I've ever had.

Recorded in Dallas. And your Texas Tech guy, the late great Bernard Wright (who died in a car accident not long after this recording and was a Dallas resident), has a photo from his younger days up on the wall behind the percussionist. If you pay close attention, at the 6:45 mark of your video, you'll see a baby faced teenager with an afro in a PR picture from his first album from the early 1980's.

You know the joke going around is this song is at a level of such earworm and performance, that Mark should rename it "Hold our Beers." I saw them at Ground Up performing a lot of their new album Empire Central. It will probably be their Mona Lisa to date. It's that good.

At the end was a gospel praise break beat. A thing definitely in black and southern churches.

This is my current fave of theirs. The fun they obviously had playing it is so infectious. Before this one came out, my fave so far was this live on stage performance of "Grown Folks" from a Jazz festival in France: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNaBgptm28iUYJs.html

Fun fact: the band founder/leader and SEVERAL of the members cut their musical teeth performing on sundays in Dallas area black churches playing gospel and praise music. And the late Bernard Wright... the Texas Tech guy... was one of the early influencers of the band. Check out his solo on the song "Take It" from this session/album.

It was most likely in or near Denton, TX …as this was a ‘back to the roots’ session and where the band was initially formed. Since you like SP and DL, have you tried reacting to Jacob Collier? He is a multi-grammy winning genius who deserves more reaction videos.
